Sorry, Stupid Question - Brake Pad warning light

Featured Replies

I have a 2010 L&K with just shy of 90,000 miles. my car was serviced at the end of last year and the dealership made a not of break pad wear.

I got a letter from them last week asking me to pop in to have them checked again.

correct me if I am wrong, but does my car not have a warning light when the pads are low??

I have contributed to other topics about how long my 1st set of pads have lasted.

thanks in advnace.

They are just trying for more work. Yes your car does have a warning light. My old Octavia MK2 estate was still on its original disks and pads when I sold it at 99K miles.

just look your self.

you can tell by looking, even with the wheels on, weather you need new pads or not

IIRC the warning light comes on at 90% when a wire in the pad breaks.

80k and all original pads/disks here

my 2013MY vrs doesn't have a pad wear sensor

My 2007MY vRS definitely does have a pad wear sensor. Comes on with a loud "PING" noise too!

A lot of dealers tend to work with the Red, Amber, Green system when it comes to things like brake / tyre wear. If there's a good chance it'll wear out before the next service, they'll mark it 'RED', even though you might still have 6,000+ miles before it wears out.

i think the wear sensor was removed from the FL . i remember reading about it on here

Can anyone confirm this? My car is leased and the brakes look low but they wont change them until they are nearly dangerous I expect. Its only done 45k but is 'well used'.

Also bear in mind that heat transfer to the fluid is increased as the pad material gets thinner, because the friction material is an insulator but the backing plate isn't.  If you drive hard or in very hilly areas you probably shouldn't run the pads wafer-thin.
