What's the 2WD 110 derv Yeti like as a motorway cruiser?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been a Skoda fan for years, having owned numerous Octavia's etc, but I'm giving very serious consideration to buying a 2WD yeti 110 diesel - I'd get it remapped without a doubt, so I'm not too fussed on the standard power delivery.

What I am interested in is how the car is on the motorway for noise and comfort ?

I'm torn between a Superb estate, another Octavia Vrs Derv, a Yeti or possibly (as an oddball choice - a Rapid)

what I need/want is space, some pace (but I'm not a teenager anymore!) and something that's fun (which probably knocks the Rapid on the head straight away!)

I really don't need four wheel drive, so I'd actually prefer the simplicity and lower running costs of 2WD to be honest. The wife had a jeep Patriot for a while (terrible!) with switchable 4WD and we only put it in 4WD mode twice just to try it out!!

There's two cars in the classifieds here that I'm interested in, one is the Yeti Urban and the other is the Vrs octavia in white..... my head is saying the Yeti would be the better choice??

Anyone car to give me some guidance?

An Octavia makes a better motorway cruiser as it's got less drag.

But the Yeti Urban is a more funky choice with a higher seating position for better visibility.

On costs I'd buy the Octavia. But the Yeti is different, when the roads are full of Octavias and similar cars.

They will remap to 175bhp by the way as the 110 engine is the same as the 140.

when you say costs, do you mean fuel costs?

I'd have thought the overall cost of the Yeti would be lower over say three years (despite the higher purchase price) as it suffers a less steep depreciation curve - and of the two cars I refer to on here, the yeti is a 2012 with 5k miles at say £15k asking and the Octavia is a 2009 with 25k miles at £12k asking price.

I'm probably going to be doing 15-20k miles pa (so not huge, but above average)

Sorry Bossfox, are you saying the drag on the Yeti makes it noisy on the motorway - wind noise etc?

Thanks for the input :)

The 110 will of course re-map but is itself a good and effective device. In 2WD form it should be just fine and the Urban was an attractive Special edition.

Noise and comfort should be better than a 4WD as the car is lighter. My 140 is a wonderful mile eater-the higher eye level and good handling make for a very comfortable long distance machine.

I've just done about 160 or 170 miles on the M62 in my greenline without much fuss and, as it is 5BHP down on the 110, i would imagine the 110 will be fine on the motorway.

It isn't as composed as the Passat was but it is better than the Touran was and much more refined / quiet than the Leon ever was.

The greenline really could do with a 6th cog for the motorway, in my opinion anyway. and i'm not sure If the 110 is similarly only a 5 speed?

Honestly, if you spend most of your life on the M'way i'd consider the Octavia will give you better fuel consumption all be it a bit more dull.

I am biased as the Yeti for sale is mine.

However, and I am sure I speak for all Yeti diesel owners - I am amazed how quite it is cruising at 70mph - no one believes it is a diesel. Plenty of mid range punch. Cannot really fault at all.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes, it'll use more fuel as it's a bit of a brick at speed. Not a huge amount more, but you can't overcome physics.

Wind noise seems quite well supressed on the Yeti. A little bit more but not excessive that would bother you.

Both those cars are nice examples but the Yeti seems a good buy with two years warranty and very low milage. Plus it's an Urban with the nice wheels. :)

Where as the price of the Octy VRS is OK but not cheap as it's such a good example.

Not an easy decision IMO.

In all honesty I'd go for the Yeti because I like cars that are a bit different and live with using a bit more fuel. The Octy is a good car, but rather normal.

Yeti won't have the same punch as the VRS obviously though.

Well, I've just been down to my local Skoda dealer....

The Rapid is definitely out!, sorry to anyone who owns one, but god know's how they made it look so smart in the TV advert where the dad uses the in car sound system for his daughter's party..... the one I just looked at was an awful, narrow looking thing, just looked all wrong in the metal.

I also think the superb estate is out, my wife would struggle even with front and rear parking sensors, and I think (on reflection) that I'm still a little young for one even at 44! My wife's only 34, so she'd hate it!

So I think it's a straight fight between a yeti or an Octavia Vrs........ where's Harry Hill!

;)

Driven mine 980 miles across Europe in one day; so no issues with motorway work/comfort from my experience.

That's my thinking really, the Octavia looks lovely, but for me the asking price is ambitious based on scouring auto trader, piston-heads et al. Having said that, the boot on the Octavia is massive and I'd probably need a roof box on the Yeti for uk family holidays (not a big deal though!)

sko-with-go,

Just realised who you are!

who am I?......

seriously though, do we know each other??

or did you just mean, that we've been swapping emails about your car??

We went from an Octavia (MkI estate) to the Yeti and the boot size has been the only real downside. Added a 380 litre roofbox and that easily takes care of the holiday luggage. The Yeti is a nice place to be for long or short journeys but then the Octavia was too. Good luck with making your decision!

Yes!

Hmm very tough decision - can kind of see your logic on the Superb but it would give you the best of both worlds, space and comfort/cruising.

Just had a quick look at both cars and they both have their pros and cons, both are very good cars.

I'd say the Octavia is the better cruiser, although the Yeti will be better on consumption due to the lower powered engine. If you are going to have it re-mapped then I think you already know the answer to your question!

Get the Yeti ....get it remapped ...the yeti is quiet, does about 43mpg at 70 ish on the motorway, is easier to drive as you are just that little bit higher up and can see further ahead, it's also comfortable, easy to park, a doddle to drive and fun as well

I have a 110 TDi Yeti, I also drove a 1.4? petrol Octavia, for a week. I prefer the Yeti any day, it's a bit shorter and easier to park, better view of the road ahead etc. We also use a softbox on holidays. Maybe test drive both cars to make that final decision?

I agree a tough one, but nice to be able to be in a position to make it! I have no experience of the Yeti, other than being impressed when I saw the urban in the dealers showroom (and trying to convince my dad to get rid of his camper van for 1) but would guess it will offer a smoother ride due to the vRS' lowered suspension and 40 section low profiles and the higher seating position will be a nice place to be too if a nice relaxing drive is your main priority, plus of course it is a bit different and residuals are high on the yeti. in 2 wheel format i guess the roadnoise from the tyres will be less than the vRS too as the standard contis do sing a tune on the wrong surfaces! Downside is the smaller boot on the Yeti- I saw one recently at my golf club and the guy had to fold the seats down to get 1 set of clubs and an electric trolly in, where as my Octy takes 2 of each without problem. If you remap the yeti you'll (probably) get poorer fuel consumption than the vRS as the yeti will offer more wind resistance and is probably lower geared in 6th? if you add a box on the top it'll be worse, though fuel consumption isn't the holy grail IMO (as long as you're not getting <30mpg!). Upside of the vRS is obviously it's more of a 'drivers' car and the CR170 is a joy on the motorway- I came back from cornwall last week with 5 up (all of us adults) and a full boot and got an indicated 50 mpg cruising at/above the legal limit without being too silly. I include this only to give you an idea of what the vRS may offer should you decide on one. Residuals on the vRS burner are good too, though the yeti probably pips it in a straight fight.

Have you driven both? that should be the clincher really

My head would say the Yeti, heart the vRS!

best of luck

ive just driven to hannover airport and back today. did an indicated 110 (mph) on the a2 for about twenty miles each way. I can honestly say that I was surprised how quiet it was. it definitely cruised nicely lol.

However mdi reckoned I was getting between 57-62 mpg at the time!!

I think that was optimistic!!

many thanks for all the comments, but If I do buy a Yeti it definitely won't be the white one listed on here :swear:

Why not? it looks a really good car, low mileage too.

Go for the yeti, every man and his dog has an octavia

I don't and neither does my cat :giggle:

But I nearly did

Long story, not saying I won't buy a Yeti, just not that one.

Don't throw your toys out of the pram just because I did not accept your offer - anyway, I thought you were buying the Silver Urban from the London dealer for £15K?

And please tell the other members why you will not be buying my one - I am sure they would all love to know. If not perhaps I will tell them.
