  • I've met BMW drivers that are envious of my boot and I've jut got the hatch. A few were in the process of switching to Skoda. The ultimate driving machine is feck all use if the pram won't fit.

  • I asked my dogs and they both said that they enjoyed looking out of the side windows in the estate and that the back window was easier to look through.

For me has to be an estate, the boot in the hatch is massive still but the sloping glass limits its practicality particularly if you have a dog or are considering getting one.

Also the hatch fills the boot with water when opened after a bout of rain and IMO rear wiper faults seem more common on the hatches.

Only minor complaint about the estate is that it does look a little plain fron behind. Skoda should have at least fitted a tailgate spoiler as they did with the hatch.

We have just changes from the Hatch to the Estate so much easier with a family and also i think it looks better.

You do if the roof box is bigger than the car!

You may be surprised :)

This is fast turning into who can fit the most on an Octavia roof thread. Lol does anyone have a hatch with a dog?

Plenty room for dogs in the hatch unless you have really big ones or you want to use a big cage. In that case you'd see the benefit from the estate.

Depends what size dog were talking about. I had a 4.5 stone pointer cross springer and put him in the back of a vectra hatch once; first thing he did was try and look out the window and nearly knocked himself out and any harder would have probably put the glass through.

A decent size hatch with a flat rear window is fair enough but something like that isnt fair on a bigger dog, particularly as most like to see where they are going.

Mine is the hatch - we've got two labradors to get in as well. As in my earlier post, I was initially looking at the estate but we decided that the hatch would actually be big enough for what we needed. Contrary to the popular opinion on this thread, I'm not the greatest fan of the Octy estate either - it looks a bit "frumpy" for my tastes. Many other manufacturers make estates that look nicer than their hatch/saloon equivalents although they may not be as practical.

I have to confess that I've still not put the dogs in ours though - I'm trying to put off the ingress of dog hairs for as long as possible!

I have a pretty large retriever to is more than happy in my hatch back as he just jumps in and lies down til we get where we're going. There's still room for him to sit up if he wants.

That said... He does seem to prefer the extra million cubic litres in my dads vectra estate.

On the side of roof loads, I carry bikes all the time and really wish I had an estate. I hate clamping the roof bars on to the paintwork. They do cause damage. That is the main reason my next car will be an estate!

Other plusses are the extra 12v socket in the boot, no wet boot contents when it's raining, lighter boot lid, looks better.....

Have you bought that estate yet??!! Why not?!

I had a mk 1 hatch which I don't think is that different size or shape wise in the boot but the dog didn't like it at all so most of the time he travelled in the front footwell while he didn't mind travelling in an estate.

Trust me Estate is the way forward :)

I have a lab. He fits ok in my fabia but the hatch is taller then an Octavia I would have thought

I cannot understand when people say the estate is better looking than the hatch on a VRS!

They both look the same from the front (which is damn good in race blue), but from the back the estate looks so average and boring. Hatch wins every time.

Practicality-wise, I'm sold on the estate. Luckily I'm only 26 so all this family malarky doesn't affect me :D

My next vehicle will be an estate, but definately not a mk ll.

Have you guys seen the mk lll Octy estates? I think they look much better, cannot wait to see what they do with the VRS version.

I've always had my eyes on an Audi Avant but who knows now...

I think most people here would agree that the hatch "needs" vRS styling whereas the Estate works as a normal pleb spec version too.

I think the estate is generally better proportioned and suits the vRS monkier well, particularly as a warm quick economical diesel load lugger.

The rear end of the estate could use a bit of jazzing up; the vRS specific rear bumper looks too much like the standard one really and as it is a vRS it does surprise me that Skoda never fitted a tailgate spoiler to them to differentiate it from the normal car........on the flip side though it does make it that bit more subtle.

Personally I have never really liked the rear spoiler on the vRS hatch, too shouty for such a car and a bit halfords bolt on for my liking........give them a few years and they fade and delaminate anyway

Five years of travelling with the large fellow pictured in my avatar sitting in the boot and no hair ingress to the rest of my car to my knowledge. ;) Had to sit him in the passenger footwell twice but made sure there were huge cloths over that side. Go go short haired dogs!! :)

The pic is in an old Volvo sedan... no boot, got a first class upgrade and seemed to enjoy it. :0)

When I was looking for my Octavia we were going to get an estate but didn't because the boot is the same size and I think the hatch looks better (in a vRS way - it's all about the spoiler!). As mentioned the boot size is the same and there have only been a few occasions when I have wanted the extra height on offer in the estate. The roofbars would be handy though, as would the 12v socket in the boot.

We have a dog and she finds it okay. I think she'd prefer an estate because she would be able to see more but believe me she is not short of space back there. The only thing is that that means we have to remove the parcel shelf and store it in the house which is a carry on.

If I was choosing again, I'd still go for the hatch. I'm 23 and still too young to be getting a family estate - the hatch is bad enough! But if I had kids on the agenda too, I'd perhaps be more inclined towards the estate.

Some pictures for you.

(excuse the idiot, but that all fitted in with the seats folded. That is luggage and camping equipment for two, 4 x front wings, 2 x sills, various other spare parts)

Every man and his dog has an estate. :giggle: :giggle: :bandit:

I've had both, I prefer the estate because the flatter rear tailgate means I can fit bikes in easier. The roof rails mean I can use a much sleeker looking whispbar roof rack and being over 6ft means putting the bikes on the roof is easy. Thirdly, it's even more anonymous Q car.

i have the estate vrs and the boot space is fantastic and when seats are down its huge! i have put allsorts in the boot filled right up and has not failed to amaze me what you can get in the estate version, i agree they should have done some thing on the rear end maybe a better spoiler for the vrs .

Nonsense!!

Its got the most subtle spoiler ever and i havent heard of many spoilers "fade" & "delaminate"

Calling it the most subtle spoiler ever is questionable, really not for me anyways. If id bought a hatch i couls have lived with it for sure but it'd been better with just a small lip spoiler or something like. BMW have always done this to good effect on their M sport models.

And i have also seen a few posts on here RE fading and lacquer peeling, probably bad luck and would take a few years but still
