Ignition Switch

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Looking for the part number for an ignition switch

Has been flaky for a while but getting worse lately, when i turn the car off it behaves like the key is removed

Doors unlock, radio off etc.

Are they easy to change?

Thanks

Dallan

Youll need a new key blade as well. As im not sure if skoda can match your barrel combination.

Hi Matty

Not looking to change the key, just the switch unit at the end of the lock barrell

Oh rate. Sorry for that haha.

They are a PITA to change

removing the transponder reader and key barrel is easy enough.

There are 2x sheerhead bolts that need to be removed

All sorted now, thanks to Eddie-NL for the info

Dallan

Just for others

I thought the whole Steering Lock and ignition switch was all one part

Ignition Switch part number 1K0 905 865A

After some investigation the actual switch can be changed without having to change the steering lock with the sheerhead bolts

To remove

prise the plastic cover off and you will see 2x tabs which can be released with 2x small screwdrivers and pull it out

The main reason for changing would be due to strange behaviour with the door locks, interior lights, radio staying on etc

Modified switch, was a very common fault at one point. And like you say it just pops off the back of the steering lock.

Hi All

New switch arrived today, thanks to Eddie-NL and fitted in 10-15 mins including disconnecting battery and resetting the time after :p

Dealer reckoned 90 mins

Anyway i now have 1K0 905 865A (Revision A) replacing the original 1K0 905 865

Modified switch, was a very common fault at one point. And like you say it just pops off the back of the steering lock.

Pity the dealer who scanned it at 12 months old in 2010 didn't seem to know that even though it was logging faults

Anyway enough bitchin, thanks for the good advice as usual now i can listen to the radio and not have to leave the car running

How much was the switch? mine is doing the same as yours & my central locking unlocks & locks as i drive along sometimes, was it easy to fit?

Bought from Eddie-NL for a reasonable amount :) not sure if he has any more, dealer wanted nearly €40, i have also seen them on ebay

Dead easy to fit, remove trim

unclip the outside cover

and there are 2 plastic tabs holding the unit in the end of the metal barrell

unclip connector, and refit in reverse, just make sure the slot in the middle lines up correctly

when you reconnect the battery, you will have some lights on the dash, its normal just go for a quick drive and they go out

Thanks for that,he has been in touch about a switch,i wont disconnect the battery,if the ignition is turned off & the key out im sure it will be fine.

Yeah but you need to turn the wheel to get at the trim screws so key in to prevent steering lock :)

Are you seriously telling me that the switch is a 10 minute job to swap without needing to remove the barrel itself?

Our car has now been at the dealers for over 5 weeks. They found a problem with the switch so ordered a new one.

While fitting the switch a pin (they said) came out of the barrel and they were unable to fix it. Still waiting for the barrel to arrive.

They have also removed every bit of trim from around the steering wheel, the steering wheel itself and (I think) the dash clocks.

If this is the case I will not be happy! :wonder:

Phil

Ah DM Keith, you gotta love 'em.

I wouldn't trust them to top up the washer fluid.

I replaced my ignition switch tonight,it took me 15 mins, worse part was finding a screwdriver small enough to release the switch,it seems to have fixed my problem, phil all i can think of is the numpty's at dm kieth have been rough getting the switch out & broke the casing hence you needing a complete ignition switch, lock etc.

Phil, its what mikey said a 15 min job, i used 2 watch screwdriver's to unlock the 2 tabs(shown below) 1 is the switch, 2 is the wiring connector, arrows show locking tabs

octavia-mk2-7291.png

i cant see how they could damage the barrell it seemed fairly sturdy metal to me

There is only the flat shaft which sits in the middle of the actual switch which goes anywhere near it

Yep, just done mine in 15 minutes as well.

Got the new switch from TPS today but the part number has been superseded by 1K0 905 849 B which seems to work fine but comes complete with a short section of wiring loom that I didn't appear to need.

Cured the starter motor kicking in with the key in position II !

Luckily I ran accross this topic 2 days ago as my car was scheduled for 105kkm regular service today. It had all the mentioned symptoms (radio off, internal light erratic behaviour, automatic window opening). I was afraid that something more serious was going on. Today the switch was replaced with the latest 1K0 905 849 B revision and all the functionality is back again.

Efficient fix for a small amount of money. Really happy. :whew:

  • 2 weeks later...

Car is back.

New switch and everything is working fine.

Phil

New switch has fixed both my problems too.......best £15 ive spent.

  • 8 months later...
