It will be something like that. I photographed this one a year or two ago at Sweetlamb, he did not even lift, just ploughed on and finished the event.

If it's g reg or before it will be an M20 or an M30 engine! After it's an M50 iirc I do like sweet lamb :)

  • Well after a really early start this morning I have sold my Golf to a guy from Dartford, he has big plans for more power, a roll cage and getting it road legal again, I agreed to deliver it for some b

  • 2015 is now here, the next chapter in the life of the Golf is about to begin!  After the low boost set up in 2014, I am happy to run that in 2015 whilst I go collecting parts again, the plan is 450 bh

  • Just spoken to Wayne and paid him, he has squeezed 280.6bhp at 6450rpm and 274 lb/ft torque at 4300rpm with 6psi boost, so I am quite happy with these figures, from a stock block and piston, he has al

Looks like fun.

I take it you'd take the BM on track as well. No point sticking to rallies only is there? :)

Personally, in your position I'd go the rally route.

But it would be a shame to lose you from track days.

Once properly sorted your Golf would be quicker than just about everyone considering it's a non-road legal track car.

I am sure it would be hooned around anywhere, although a gravel set up might be a bit soft for track and nobly tyres would be frowned upon at the circuit.

Take the Golf rallying - perhaps rallycross ?

Only the M20 in the E30 :) The M30 was in the bigger cars like the 5/6/7. The M50 was the next generation engine for the E36/E39 era, I think.

Personally, I'd be wary at £3k unless I had checked VERY thoroughly for rust.

Although that would be my direction - you can still take it on track days too, so it's a more mutlipurpose car than the Golf if it can rally too. Having had a Golf, it's also a lot more fun to drive!

James, Trigger Fish above is the bloke to talk to about BMW E30s he really really knows his stuff!

Oho, that's a bold statement! :D

M50 was the early e36's and one of the better engines. Popular swap into the e30 and takes to turbo'ing rather well :)

E39 also had the m50 but that had the smaller restrictive inlet mani.

OK, so I have had a chat with my friendly mechanic, we now have an action plan to refine, perfect and map the Golf ready for next years events. We have between now and November to get things sorted and then a track day at Oulton Park to shake it down to see how it goes and make plans for a few jobs over winter.

Plans also include some suspension tweaking to give better turn in and less understeer (which is not too bad now) Rear polybushing too.

Whilst all this is going on I am going to take my ARDS test for a competition licence for the track.   I have also applied to Phil Price in Ludlow to take my BARS test so I have the option to have a go at rallying if I want to.

Great stuff. Would like to get into sprints but things always crop up.

Probably take you up on that, although I was going to pay for the full rally experience at Phil's swell as the BARS test.

The Golf is booked in for a map on the 17th, I will know what power we have achieved with the turbo upgrade, instead of guessing, boost will be 8psi when mapped and not 5psi as I am running now, with correct fuelling and other mapping tweaks I am guessing it will be a flying machine when it comes back.

The next round of upgrades will be tyres, brakes, Haldex controller (Maybe) and some bigger balls to push it to the limit  :D

Golf is on the trailer ready to go to the rollers tomorrow, a bit of mapping and what have you, also should find out what power it is producing and not just guess.

Don't think you need bigger balls personally.

Seems to go well and you aren't scared to push it.

With 8psi it's going to be seriously brisk.

At 5psi it was about a match for the Yeti.

OK I am home from the rollers and I have an empty trailer  :|   The Golf is still there with Wayne, I arrived this morning, car went straight onto the rollers, after it had warmed up and all the pipes and wires were connected Wayne did four runs with the set up it has after bolting everything on and doing little else.

I was quite surprised to 250bhp @ the wheels, after all very little has been done in the way of set up. Once this was done, the ECU was downloaded and Wayne set to, looking at the laptop, many many squiggly lines and banks of numbers, he has coded out all the error codes now the SAi has gone, Post CAT lambda's have also gone as has the fuel breather evaporator thingy, this took a fair bit of time as the mapping software is technical (I had no idea what he was explaining to me, it just looked like a chart showing seismic activity to me)

Any, to cut a long day short, it is still strapped to the rollers and it will be for most of Monday, Wayne is going to fettle it so I have a good power delivery and also a fairly reliable set up, I am now looking forward to collecting it next week and having the plumb back dump valve fitted and my exhaust finished off too before Oulton Park.

Wayne did mention today that one hour on track in your car has the same effect on it as driving for 5,000 miles, something to think about.

I will post a bit of video later.

Great stuff. Yes mapping from scratch is time consuming.

Wayne why does that name ring a bell. Trying to think of the company but having a mind blank. Rochdale way?

Chipwizard?

Is it Wayne Schofield? He remapped my saxo vts on a standard 3 plug ecu. He was the only bloke in the country that could do it at the time. Certainly knows his stuff.

Yes it is Wayne Schofield, his company is chip wizard and I can confirm he is a wizard! I was amazed watching him today, he deciphered what looked like a mess to my eyes into a logical series of things to adjust, it was fascinating.

Here is the Golf on the rollers, a bit of a warm up at first, then a power run, 254 hp and 250 lb/ft torque, this was first thing before any mapping has been done, I am expecting an improvement on this when I get the car back.
