  • Well after a really early start this morning I have sold my Golf to a guy from Dartford, he has big plans for more power, a roll cage and getting it road legal again, I agreed to deliver it for some b

  • 2015 is now here, the next chapter in the life of the Golf is about to begin!  After the low boost set up in 2014, I am happy to run that in 2015 whilst I go collecting parts again, the plan is 450 bh

  • Just spoken to Wayne and paid him, he has squeezed 280.6bhp at 6450rpm and 274 lb/ft torque at 4300rpm with 6psi boost, so I am quite happy with these figures, from a stock block and piston, he has al

New brake lines arrived today, HEL made the fronts to suit the MK 4 Golf and Brembo upgrade, rears are standard MK 4.  I must just add that Ben Viner at HEL performance was a great guy to deal with, can't recommend them enough.

ive just had to buy new lines for mine, went for goodridge in the end, isnt the leon cupra r kit the same? thats what ive brought, mind you dont know wether the lines are slightly different for the 4wd rear setup

I asked about just buying Cupra R lines but apparently the fitment to the solid pipework on the Golf is different, HEL made these up for me, rears are different to a none AWD Golf too.

I looked at a few companies for lines even making them myself but HEL seemed to be a good company and the service was good too. Next post will be the fitting of them.

ooh i hope mine fit okay cant see octy being different to golf

Well the goodridge ones are right but don't replace the hard pipe off the caliber grrr so back they go, if your old ones are in good nick James ill have them off you

No problem Trev, I will have them swapped over next weekend.

OK, Brembo's are now fitted and I have to say it was a really simple mod, an easy removal of the old callipers and discs, also removed the rusted shield thing, and then on with the discs and Brembo's.

Before we bolted everything up tight and took off the brake pipe to the old calliper we trial fitted the wheel, glad we did as it is close, I mean very close! However it does clear the wheel and therefore we carried on.

Once everything was bolted up tight, it was time to bleed them up, nipples were a bit tight so I have ordered some new but for now I managed to open and tighten them enough to get a good flow of brake fluid through them and no bubbles of air.

Best bit was getting down the road to try them, I have to say even compared to the 312mm set up I had, the Brembo 4 pots are immense, easily stopping the car in a very short distance, I am more than happy with this upgrade and would recommend it to anyone.

A few pictures of what we did.

Fitted loose ready for the wheel fit check.

Braided hoses fit a treat, even the rubber grommets and clips.

Very nice.  If we had time at Oulton I could have done "The Brembo Refurb" treatment on them :D

Nice brake and wheel combo snap hehe

They are close to the wheel but I've had them very hot and they don't expand enough to cause and issue :)

Looking good Trev, if I had kept using the wife's Fabia for track days I would have got white wheels as they would look good on a race blue car, however my pink Golf I opted for graphite.     I was amazed at the way these brakes stop from any speed, they are brilliant.

No need for bling Jason, if the Brembo's are looking too new I would have to polish the rest of the car and I don't want to do that, I read on another thread that a small tub of sealer or something was about £45, in my book that is half a tank of petrol  ;)

It's the initial bite I can't get over, I had to learn to drive differently as I almost kept going through the windscreen lol, they are amazing though, I've had 312 setup with expensive discs and pads and 334mm r32 setup too but the brembos are such a step up, I'm sure there hold up well for track use :)

Looking good gents. :)

Hope you have better luck than me with the brembos, mine were a massive waste of £500.

They are currently in my loft awaiting there fate, mine were dangerous. Joys of buying used.

They seem to be very good so far, will know better when they have had a day at the track!

Even with oval pistons they had good bite, I would think they are very good when working correctly.

  • Author

you could always advertise them for £500 on another VAG forum, naughty I know but who knows they might work on a different car..

They were ok when I had them mate.........  ;)

I did think about putting them up for 300 needing referb, but for now they will stay in the loft.

I may look into fixing them one day.

Well called into see some guys who sell friction products today, I had all sorts of brake pads on the table, Ferodo, Mintex, Pagid and so on, after a lot deliberation and discussion I decided to go with DS3000's again even though the DS2500's let me down!

All I need to do now is wear out the last of the pads that were in the callipers when I got them.

I have also ordered my injectors and possibly sourced a mapper for when the turbo goes on later this year.

I think I am becoming a politician........

After a really good day at Oulton Park yesterday with a few fellow Brisky types, some drifting on the corners and a minor ploughing trip on the grass it has got me thinking if I really want to turbo charge the V6

Yesterday, I really got the feel for the car, loads of confidence throwing it in to the corners, closing other cars down on the brakes and only lacking a bit of oomph on the straights, the car was also super reliable, no issues at all, Brembo's performed really well if getting a little hot, they are now brown and not red.

Power increase, I think a head porting session, cams, de cat, performance exhaust and a map might just be enough to give the car what it needs, a little bit more power without any unreliability. Combine this with a bit more weight loss and I think I would have a balanced package, it won't get past boss fox on the track but I would be well in the mix with all the Stage tuned cars.

 Decisions, decision......

Here is the car sitting planted yesterday.

Since you've got most of the kit, would be shame not to use it

Guess it depends want you want from the car though

imho putting a huge turbo on will ruin the drivabality at tracks like Oulton - just be too laggy

A fast boosting responsive turbo would be fun

  • Author

I think extra power is needed, just not sure on reliability, also if I load another 150 bhp into the car I will be quicker on the straights obviously but I could spend a bit more on set up to be even quicker on the corners, carry the speed if you get me.

Turbo is cool for point and shoot then brake for the corners and point and shoot again.  I need to have a go in a V6 that is turbo'd maybe.

Cams, Porting, map and maybe a nitrous kit would give the little bit more needed..

As for the turbo bits and bobs I am sure they will sell easily on VR6OC or somewhere similar
