James' VR6T 4 Motion Golf. Now SOLD!

Quick update;

Fitted a pod of gauges, they were from an Audi 80, this will allow me to keep an eye on oil temp, oil pressure and BOOST. Nice addition.

A spare set of wheels have been purchased off c3po Brisky member, a nice trip to PontyPridd yesterday with the wife, treated her to an evening out, nice meal etc in the Royal Oak Hotel, Rhandirmwyn (I think that is how you spell it). On the way home today I got the new wheels mated to some slicks at Demon Tweeks, looking forward to giving them a try, maybe at How Fast :p

This afternoon, I have fashioned a heat shield to cover the turbo manifold and fitted a titanium jacket to the turbo on the hot side, also found somewhere to mount the oil cooler but stuck for space for the catch can.

Finally I remembered I had a strut brace I bought off Krissthemiller in December last year, so drilled a few holes and bolted this on, time will tell if it is excess weight or if it improves anything.

Tomorrow, polybushing the front wishbones and fitting some new DS3000 pads as there is nowt left of the old pads.

One of the triple pods that sit above the stereo in an Audi 80? :) I can imagine that will look very neat and tidy :)

That is the one mate, I got it from a 1988 Audi 80 Quattro, looks ok, I just need to source the senders and fittings to make them work now.

I do like an old 80 the neighbour used to have one that I worked on a lot

A few more bits done today, tyres are now on the wheels and they are collected, picture below.

I also jacked the Golf up and started my bush transplant. What a pig of a job! Subframe needs letting down so the front bolt on the off side can be removed, got the wishbone off and the old bushes out, they were completely split.

Nearside, started to remove everything and the bolt through the front bush just spins, the captive nut has become free, so through a little hole I managed to hold it with a screwdriver to get it out, the fun will begin when I try and tighten it back up tomorrow.

Rear bushes are easy to replace, the big bushes at the rear are proving more difficult, off to a mates house tonight to borrow his press, show them who is boss!

On re assembly tomorrow, I will replace the brake pads as they have hardly anything left on them.

Also noticed a slight oil leak when under the car so I will see where that is coming from tomorrow.

Are those 7J alloys Jamie?

Looks like a lotta bulge with the 225's on. They have to be on the hairy edge of what you can get away with fitting width wise surely?

  • Author

They are 7J and yes the tyres are wide, the Federals I have the other rims are also 225-45-17, the side walls are extremely hard on these tyres and bit of bulge is good, especially when you clip a kerb and the other reason they are this size is because they don't do a 215-40-17

Gauges are now in, I took he oil pressure out and swapped it for Boost, this will also be swapped for a lower 15psi gauge, I am only running 5psi so very little movement! Oil temp is ready for connecting to the sender when it arrives on Monday probably. Volts works fine

Tyres look fun. Think Jim ran them on his fabia rally car.

Thought about a wide band lambda sensor and gauge so you can check it's not running lean?

I have to look into mapping and ECU's etc as the standard ECU is not mappable apparently.

As for running lean, I have 4 bar going across the fuel rail and haven't heard any pinking etc, if anything I think it is running too rich as it managed 4.5mpg on track at Blyton Park!!

I have an EML light on at the minute as it has been de catted and the two post cat lambdas are in my garage, so I need to get them coded out and some sort of map on to it after Bedford.

 To Do;

Source a mappable ECU

Get it Mapped

Fit oil cooler

Nice tyres.

Will be interesting to hear how they compare to typical track day tyres.

In answer to your question Richard.... I have no idea!    The Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2's stamped with the same ET as Team Dynamic Pro Race 3's for whatever reason would not fit over the Brembo's!!!!!!    So, I took them to How Fast and fetched them home again looking brand new!.

Off to buy some spacers

Looking good dude. How's the turbo kit seem?

Looking good dude. How's the turbo kit seem?

Si, the turbo itself seems ok!

The manifold was for a 12v but advertised for a 24v

The waste gate is a bit poo, open at 2psi, this is now worked around with some plumbing.

The dump valve is also poo, this is being changed to a plumb back Forge valve.

The pipe work for plumbing the turbo in is also very thin, this was left in the packaging and Russ Fellows handmade all my pipework.

The intercooler, this is ok, just a nice size for sitting in the lower part of the bumper.

I had to source a different short runner, this came from Germany and allows the throttle body to face directly down the front of the engine making it easy for the boost piping to fit.

Fuel pressure regulator is ok.

Electric fans supplied with the kit are still in the boxes, original fans are still in place.

Oil cooler is ok but not yet fitted.

Down Pipe, bespoke item by Russ Fellows.

On the whole, if I did it again I would buy a turbo, a manifold, inlet & Exhaust, fuel pressure regulator and dump valve, as I am running low boost the chinese turbo should be ok for this and seems to work well. The only reason I might consider a different turbo is to change the drive characteristics, with the turbo I have, boost comes in at 2750rpm, quite smoothly but when on track, this is usually right on the apex of the corner so it gets a bit mad!

 Next Stage:

I have to get the car mapped as it has not been done yet, also the oil cooler needs to go on.

All in all I am happy with where we have got to for the money I have spent so far.

Sounds like it was worth the gamble tho tbh which is good to hear ;)

  • Author

Yes, for the money I spent and what I got I am happy. The big advantage is the increase in power, just running 5 psi boost the increase has to be at least another 60-70 bhp, at Blyton Park the Golf was keeping up with BossFox Yeti, Jason's Mongrel, at How Fast Yesterday I was also keeping up with Mayo's Octavia too, couldn't pass him but had a good tussle with him.

So when it is mapped, who knows what it will go like.

Collected my spacers today so as I can run the TD 1.2's with my slicks on  :p

 Shiny too

This is me being an idiot, but I'm not entirely sure how spacers work.

Do you bolt the spacer to the hub, then use a second set of bolts to bolt the wheel to that?

Or does it literally sit on the hub and you use longer bolts and the same stud holes?

  • Author

These bolt to the hub, then I will use the wheel studs I have to bolt in to the spacers.  Secret is not to over tighten them, Torque wrench is the key  ;)

I have been having a think today where I am going with the Golf, obviously it costs a few bob to run a track car with little return.

I have considered taking my ARDS test so as I can enter a series, Golf would need a roll cage and fire extinguisher etc, so more cost but I would have a fixed calendar to race through each year.

BUT, then I thought I could take the BARS test instead, this would give me a licence to rally a car, sell the Golf in bits and get a 325i BMW that is already rally prepped, these are available for reasonable money, enter a few single venue events and see how I get on.

I am undecided what to do at the minute and will have to have a think  about what to do.

I can understand that where as when you are in a series you've got something to aim for etc. as you've said a few of your friends already have Rally Cars you'll be in the know already!

I would be a long way away from the guys I know who rally, I have not got the sort of money they have for Escorts and sequential gearboxes and BDA engines!

I will have to weigh it up, see what the costs are and also see what I can get back out of the Golf, I should see a couple of grand if I part it out.

Yes I suppose was it a BMW E30 you were thinking of?
  • Author

Yes, there were quite a few cars built for a BMW challenge a few years ago now, they are ready to go, robust engine and decent power, I have seen these for as little as £3K, seems a cheap way to go rallying.

They are great cars! Built like a tank and so reliable! straight 6 in them? M50b25 or maybe an M20 or M30 engine fitted :)

It will be something like that.  I photographed this one a year or two ago at Sweetlamb, he did not even lift, just ploughed on and finished the event.
