Adding rear disc breaks to my Fabia Monte Carlo...

Featured Replies

Think I'm gonna take the gamble for £130. Will report back when it arrives.

Do you think the disc BRAKES are necessary for Hill Hold? Only expanation I can think of.

Lol

&George,

Have You bled your brakes recently? I am asking as it looks like brakes have a bit of a problem judging by the looks of the discs. Might be the photos of course:)

Thanks for your reply George. I agree it would be pointless for looks (for me), but I'll give it a punt in case the braking is a bit better.

BRAKES

Apologies.....its been a long day and now on a long night shift ***sigh*** :(

Jabo,

they are as bad as they look in the picture.

the brakes work OK if used, but as i say, they really do not get used.

Its had a MOT and they met the so so Braking efficiency that is required.

(a little hand brake on for a few yards to scrape the rust off them in the morning.)

Only 1 foot (left one), and you can not use the accelerator and brake to clean the brakes,

and then with a DSG for decelerating means that the car goes around every corner easily enough that i come across at 60 or 70 mph without the need to touch the brakes.

(i do use the brakes on cars with auto gearboxes that do not do manual downshifts as well as a DSG,

but then they are decent brakes.)

That new discs, front and rear were fitted last august, the previous ones in the right hand picture had been skimmed, but we get lots of salt on roads up here.

A set of rear Drum brakes would do me fine, they are only for stopping at junctions, and i hardly use a Hand Brake when the car has 'Park'.

As long as they work fine is all that matters. After track action I have a keen eye on my brakes and could see a very visible evolution of the discs surface, especially front ones. They were heavily overheated, white/blue with visible "rings" or grooves etc. James I took his brakes apart and cleaned/filed the pads. I left it on and could see how they change. Now, after almost 900miles of motorway driving on continent with lots of High speed heavy braking they look absolutely perfect.

To get back on the topic drums I personally hate with a passion simply due to pain in the back side servicing compared with discs. Braking performance would probably be adequate for even fast road driving but there's no hope for them on a track.

Looks-personal thing and no point in discussing it really :).

Just phoned my dealer and it's good and bad news:

Can't add ESC+ cos it's been built!!! :-)

Oh well, people seem happy with the brakes so perhaps it's stopped me spending money on something unneccesary.

GLENT - hope you end up with discs on yours. I think you probably will, must be something about the mechanism for ESC+ that needs em to be fitted. Fingers crossed.

Good new on your car being built.

Fingers crossed i do get them. It seem like they are needed for the functions of esc+ in someway .

If i dont i stand a good chance of getting somenmoney back with my email from SUK saying they will be on it.

That's having driven to Nurburgring and back, no wash afterwards.

Two days after the track day (not the Nurburgring, two weeks before that) it looked like this. Notice outside of the disc still sporting overheated, burnt surface area and part closer I the hub already worked through it. Straight after the track work it was all bluish/white

Possibly bad news (although I don't trust what they say as far as I can throw them):

Dear Mr xxxxxx,

Thank you for your email. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my response.

I have had confirmation that the ESC+ does not include Rear Disc Brakes. The Standard Monte Carlo features Rear Drum Brakes and the ESC + adds the features of Tyre Pressure Monitor and Hill Hold Control. It does not add Rear Disc Brakes to the vehicle.

I hope this information helps to clarify your concerns.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

The only way to settle this is to see what arrives at the dealers I am affraid. I'd be inclined to go wtih the above quoted correspondence...

Yes i think we need to wait and see. It would appear from the letter above that people at SUK have told me some porky pies!

Ill be a little grumpy if there are no discs and ill have my email confirmation in hand and looking for a refund!

Ill keep you updated. No build week yet but it cant be long now...

I'll be banging on SUK's door until they give me a proper answer. Admittedly, I've only got a couple of days before I run out of time to change my mind on options...

The thing is, SUK have now provided two people with two completely different answers to the same question. It's just not cricket...

Is the question,

& the question that Skoda can not give a definitive answer to,?

(post #35 seems to cover it pretty well.)

'do new Montes hatches & Estates being built now have Rear Disc brakes' ?

Seriously doubt that they do, why would they,

But then i am more often wrong than right.....

Hi George, no - the question is "is there an option that will give rear disc brakes"?

GLENT54321's experience of asking that question appears to be that yes, you can get rear disc brakes if you specify ESC+.

Unfortunately when asking the same question, Skoda uk give me a flat no...

I got a 'no' when I asked the same thing! It used to be on the pre-facelift models that when you ordered ESP it came with rear discs and it said so in the brochure but not any more. :(

Have had confirmation from Skoda UK that the Monte Carlo DOES NOT come with disc brakes, no matter what option you specify.

The Greenline comes with disc brakes due to the weight of a disc brake setup being lighter than that of a drum-based setup (and the greenline has to meet certain emissions standards).

This has been queried with them, re-queried, and re-queried again. So I'm reasonably confident this is the right answer now.

I've also checked that their response applies to post-week-22-builds and they've said that it does.

Funnily enough, i received a call from SUK with regards to the email i received statiing ESC+ and rear discs, they have apologised and refunded me for the esc+ but they have kept the ESC+ on the build form as a 'good will gesture'

I had plans for the drum breaks anyway, painting them with zinc primer then a smooth white hammerite to make them a bit more cleaner/neater.

Personally I'd paint them black to make them less "pronounced", but that's my personal choice :)

BRAKES!

;)

Well! I have test driven a new monte tdi and an Ibiza fr tdi. The Ibiza has 288 mm up front and disc rear. I was told the monte has 256 mm up front and drums rear. On test drives the monte stopped much better! I have also measured the front discs ( a bit anal) and the monte has 288 mm discs.

So if the misses pulls her finger out and orders one today I think I will go down the route of heat wrinkle black drums and Leave it at that.

It's not as if she will let me take it to the "nurburgring" ;) lol

The brakes on most Skodas are unbelievable for how they corrode, and Skodas lack of a decent treatment to rear drums is pretty ridiculous.

The ones on the left are new discs on a new Monte in the showroom, then the rear drums,

the ones on the right are on a 2 month old car.

Wow, that's quick! I noticed if it rains in the evening and discs get splashed there are rust spots on them in the morning!

i was thinking the other night.....

My dad has a fabia mk2 hatch - its a 57 plate so was made when skoda were grading the fabia range '1' '2' '3' instead of s, se, elegance.

he added esp ( as it used to be called) and this gave him rear disc breaks!

my question is.....

Why has Skoda suddenly stopped putting rear disc breaks on to the fabia?

I don't think it's a case of them doing it suddenly. My 2012 Fabia Scout has ESP as standard and rear drum brakes :)  They may not be pretty but there's no issue with their performance at all. I'm more concerned that they just appear to put a light dusting of primer over them. Wife's new Fiat 500 has rear drums and they have a lovely thick powdercoat (not painted).

I have to pop my rear wheels off and get the hammerite out :( as they now look manky after winter.
