Reversing camera help - lines on screen

Featured Replies

Hi

i have fitted a number plate camera to my 61 Octy vRS.

when i have the ignition on i get a perfect picture as shown here:

cam_good.jpg

which is great ! and how it should look.

then, when i start the engine and put the car into reverse i get lines and flickering all over the screen like this:

cam_bad.jpg

which is not so good lol

i have wired the camera into the reversing light, the LED bulb from the number plate has an inline resistor fitted.

i get no bulb errors etc.

what is going on with the lines ? it only happens when the engine is running.

any help solving this would be great.

cheers.

Small update, I put the power cables for the camera onto the interior boot lights and it works fine with no lines when the engine running.

however, the boot open warning light is now illuminated on the dash.

So cabling it up to the boot lights is no good.

I have disconnected the power for the camera.

Any ideas how I can sort this ?

I seemed to of fixed this now.

Ran a fused cable from the fuse box near the drivers door.

The negative is connected to the brown cable on the rear light cluster.

I have used a 5a fuze.

does that setup sound ok ?

Every time I connected it up to the reverse light I get pulsing from the can when the engine is on.

Wiring sounds fine to me a low Amperage fuse such as 5A will protect against any problems.

Cool thanks paddy.

Its working great btw :)

hmm, following on from my post above i have ran into problems again.

it appears the way i have wired this in it is permanently powered up, even when the ignition is off.

this is causing battery drain, and through the night my alarm is going off.

i have been into my local dealer who recommended i wired it into the reversing lights, which as i have posted above doesn't seem to work.

the skoda tech said there is a reverse cable that comes in near the foot well, and that is where it should be wired in...

does that sound right ?

You should have switched (ignition) fuses that you could attach to in the fusebox as well.

Just move your cable from permanent live to switched.

ill give it a go shortly, cheers.

You could use a reverse light feed to trigger a relay and have a clean feed from the fuse box.

Phil

As a matter of interest what interface are you using?

The sterio is a Chinese all in one by Erisin the model is 1089s

the cam is a sony ccd number plate cam.

The erisin unit is pretty good, the first one had to go back as it developed a fault after a day lol

This ones been in and trouble free for a few months.

I havnt tried re wiring the cam again yet, ill do It over the weekend.

Ah, in that case I can't comment as it's not something I've come across. I thought you might be using an OEM Skoda unit with add-on interface.

Hope the wiring mod sorts it for you.

please could you tell me which fuse you used was it the reverse fuse as i'm going mad with my reversing camera work with power only but goes of when engine running

I can only report personal experience but I have to say that my installation uses the reverse light as power feed and the picture is absolutely fine, no interference at all.

Make of it what you will.

Hello, my friend have the same problem. Both of cables + and - are connected to reverse light. When start the engine  get lines and flickering all over the screen.

Ok i understud mikeholroyd, but if i take + from the boot light and - from reverse light, can i automatic switch the camera when put reverse gear ?

The radio is Erisin ES3026S , and the car is Scout 2007 diesel.

do as mike says, i did this also on his advice and it solved the problem too.

Yes & no. Some apparently have had issues with using the reverse light feed, but I've had mine that way since day 1 with absolutely no problems at all. Maybe it's down to the individual car, or the way it's done.

I have always used the windscreen wiper feed as it goes live when the key is on and the headunit picks the video feed when you are in reverse, only downside I can see is that the camera is always on when the key is on not just in reverse, but I have never had any issue.

I have an Erisin android head unit in my 2011 MK2 FL Octy. I just bought a relay from halfords to get over this issue. The reverse wire power serves as a switch which then tells the relay to draw power from a positive that i took from the fuse box off a fuse tap. It does not like power directly from the reverse light - something to do with the canbus or so i am told. Works fine now took an hour to do - just lookup how a automotive relay works on google - lots of diagrams. I am not sure if this is the best way but it is working well enough for me.

Some of the aftermarket headunits have reverse trigger wires. I have a xtrons unit and it had a wire with no tag saying what it was for. After testing it with a multimeter it was only live when i put the car in reverse. But i do have rear parking sensors. Its maybe worth having a look to see if you may have a similar wire.

The problem was solved. I buy relay 12v 30A and conect all like mikeholroyd. Now with started engine is clear picture without flickering.

Fixed mine today using method above.   My camera would not work at all with the engine running so it was disconnected.   £7 in halfords this morning and about an hours work and its now working a treat.

Thanks Mike

I have a Pumpkin Android HU and I also have a reverse camera trigger switch wire which powers that camera when in reverse.

Also, a little off topic but if you get an Aftermarket HU get the canbus wiring loom. Sooo much easier.

Mine (Xtrons) also has a camera live feed wire, but then you have to run a wire all the way to the boot.  The input to the HU is triggered by CANbus, so the method of wiring it to the interior light and the ground point below the left hand light cluster worked a treat for me.  Previously I had it wired + and - to the reverse lamp, which produced terrible interference.
