Evening Skoda folk....

 

I am currently looking in to getting myself a a K&N filter for my Skoda Octavia RS..... Now I have done countless research about it and what it looks like and how to fit one.....

So I am looking at the one above but (and this is a big butt) will this cost a little more mpg than I can do at the moment. Currently (with out heavy footing it) I can do 38.2mpg. 

 

All I am looking for is really any experience with the above filter....

An air filter will not affect economy unless its blocked.

The standard air filter doesn't choke the engine unless remapped so a K&N is really only a cheap and green way to maintaining the air flow.

One tip is to clean and dry them out, the oil they put on them is known to stick to air flow sensors which shows as a fault. They work perfectly well un-oiled.

Nope.

You can see through the holes in a k&n filter. With no oil there is very little filtering.

Imo , don't bother. Stock filters actually work and protect your engine.

I use pipercross if anything. Never used k&n so I'll look out for that but it is a fact the oil can cover the sensor hence why we advice to clean the oil off.

The oil is what catches the dust. Excessive oiling can lead to MAF issues but a light oiling is all that is required.

Pipercross don't do filters for my version of Skoda but the MAF issue seems like something to watch for. Thanks for the advice guys... :D

Use an OEM paper one unless you are running a full Stage 2 set-up. If you wish change it more frequently than the service schedule suggests. If you want to be green break the old filter up and put it in your recycle bin.

And how do they catch the really fine dust and particles without the oil?

 

That's like sanding the inside of your engine.

 

The paper filters reduce flow with age, as they block up with the fine dust, so you chuck them out and put a new one in every 10-20k miles.

 

There is only really a problem, because some service specs say you can run them for 40k or 60k miles, which IMHO is nuts.

Just replace the oem every 10k, flows perfectly well as it is unless you are running a highly tuned motor.

If it makes you feel better buy a K&N sticker from eBay :-)

Cheaper option K&N Filter sticker.......might just do that and stick to the stock one at the moment.....:)

Never understood the K&N thing... unless you keep your car for 10 years snd how many of us do that?

Not just the filter, but the cost of the clean and oil kit and then the car off the road for a few hours or a day while you dry out the filter properly after a wash, then reoil it and dab it dry.

 

Seems a bit pointless really.

If you want to replace the filter, get a CAI for the sexy sexy turbo noise! :)

If you need to keep your car for 10 years, the last thing you want is a filter that doesn't filter.

Most people these days keep reliable cars for even longer than 10 years but then some people can afford to get a new one every so often......either way i can never predict the length of time i have my cars....

Unless you work in a dusty stoury quarry, then use a 'proper' clean disposable air filter that filters and does not restrict flow.

 

If you wade in water lots do not use paper filters that disintegrate at the slightest sign of moisture.

K&N panel filters are not a Performance Mod, just a high risk mod for your pocket.

Choice of a £40 K&N Cleaned & re-oiled and still strangling an engine, probably increasing fuel consumption,

and the chance of killing a MAF,

or changing a good £11 filter every 20,000 miles.

Yep. It looks like its finally settled that from now i will be only going for stock.....Cheaper....

Well i have to say i disagree with quite a few comments above, i took some airflow readings on my car with the torque app and the k&n filter definitely had more flow than the standard paper filter. Not a truly scientific test but it showed a difference. Also my car was remapped and its normally recommended that a panel filter is fitted.

The other point about oil messing up the MAF, its never happened to me on 4 different cars now, maybe when it has been cleaned and re-oiled that the person re-oiling it has gone over the top with the oil and put too much on then it could cause a problem but that's the incompetence of the person rather than the filter.

Hi all...I used a K & N on my last turbodiesel.. it madea big difference to performance on a Citroen ZX 1.9TD..and then fitted one to my 05 plate Octavia 1.9 TDI..certainly hasn't done any harm..!!

Hmmmm this is becoming more and more interesting by the minute.....there are so many mixed opinions on this subject!
