Buying a new Yeti.

Featured Replies

Hello all, just after some advice from Yeti owners.

I'm looking to buy a new Yeti anytime now. Looking at the 2.0 TDI 4x4 140 or 170 in either SE plus or elegance trim. The only options i'm really fussed about is a heated front screen, silver roof bars and possibly the DAB radio option.

I currently drive a Fabia Vrs TDI that i've owned from new for 6 years, purchased through drive the deal and supplied by Simpsons in colne. I'll be trading this in against the yeti.

I've read on these forums that people are reporting better fuel economy from the TDI 170 engine. I dont do huge mileage now that i'm in a new job only 3 miles from home, however the wifes family are in glasgow so we drive up there and back from Fleet 2-3 times a year, 800 mile round trip, will the 170 engine be better suited for the long haul up the M6 over the 140? Overall, Is it worth the extra few hundred pounds? I am leaning more towards the 170.

Trim wise, are there many benefits in going up to the elegance over the SE Plus?

With regard to dealers, i've been using Garland skoda in Aldershot for servicing for the last 6 years and have no complaints, does anyone have any experience of purchasing through Garland or any other dealers in the surrey/hants/berks area? Any recomended or any i should avoid? And with regard to brokers such as drive the deal, anyone purchased through one recently and how did you find the experience? Are dealers giving discounts on new Yeti's to match or get near to broker prices?

Sorry for all the questions :)

The 140 vs 170 is very subjective.

I went for the 170 because it's quicker and has better brakes.

Only the 170 Yeti out of the whole range comes with the larger brakes from the factory.

The official figures do show there is little difference in economy, I average around 47mpg in my Yeti which is fine.

I don't personally see the point in a less powerful engine if there is no fuel economy benefit.

No doubt those with the 140 find it fine and it suits their uses.  But I like something with a bit of grunt and better brakes.

Regards SE plus -vs- Elegance it's a personal choice.

I went for the Elegance as it meant I could get the electric driver seat, which is a very nice option.

Best have a look in the brochure and see if you need the extra kit.

I think it's well worth it.

I went for the 170, never find myself thinking I wish I'd gone for the one with 30bhp less. I'm very happy with the Elegance trim.

bought dad a 170 L&K earlier this year - it has all the toys as standard - heated screen, park assist, Xenon headlights, DAB etc - it was "on the docks" in the Colour (silver) we wanted, and had the spare wheel as an option - again, with dad towing a caravan, he wanted a spare! - it drives well, has enough power and he loves it.

Questions to ask:

- Is a diesel a good idea for a 3 mile commute?

- Elegance spec primarily buys BiXenons and leather, but loses the SatNav over the SEplus - are these useful?

Good luck with your choice though!

Got to agree that with such a low miles regular commute a petrol would be better. I'm very happy with my 140 diesel but in the winter on just a quick local shop it never warms up let alone get to operating temperature. I do, however, do very regular 100 plus motorway trips so it makes sense for me.

Thanks for the replies so far, with regard to the commute i should really be cycling so that probably wont be an issue apart from on really grim days. After driving a diesel for 6 years i prefer them to petrol engines to be honest, i like the low end grunt.

There is currently no petrol 4x4 for sale.

Only the Front Wheel Drive 1.2tsi until the facelift becomes available.

So if you want new and 4x4 it's got to be diesel anyway. :)

Are skoda still building the current Yeti or is stock limited to what's already built until the facelift model arrives?

I'd also get a dealer to source a ready-built L&K for you - a real bargain with all the extras.

I bought my current and previous Yetis from Garland, and they'd be my first port of call if I buy a third at some point - very easy to deal with and I felt I got a sensible price both times.

As for the 140 vs 170, I originally test drove the 140 and felt that it was absolutely fine, but bought the 170 because more go is always good. I personally think it's well worth the extra money - the 140 isn't slow but the 170 does have more urge to it and there's not a huge price difference. I think general evidence is that the 170 is a bit less thirsty but that it's not a big margin. I was happy to go for a 170 again for my second Yeti - to be honest I didn't even consider the other engine options at that point.

I will be jumped on from a great height  by several members here for my opinion - but it's my opinion - but rather too much is made of the one- two- or three mpg difference between this mill and that.  So much can depend on other factors than just the basic performance of the mechanicals.  If you want more poke, and get it, then you'll use it!  That's what it's there for!

If I didn't need the 140 for its towing ability I'd opt for the cheaper 1.2 petrol - not for fuel economy but to save on capital cost.  And so that I didn't have to remember that Annie's DPF needs a good run every couple of weeks to compensate for the low day-to-day mileage.  Mind you, I think my right foot is a bit heavier in the Yeti than it was in the previous X-Trail, just because she goes  !!

Have fun making your mind up, then just enjoy whatever you buy!

I was also concerned at going from diesel to petrol (I'd run diesels exclusively for about 20 years) but knowing that the majority of my mileage was going to be short trips on local roads and country lanes and hearing concerns about potential issues with the DPF with this sort of driving from a number of sources for me going back to a petrol engine seemed to make sense. The price differential was the final factor so I ordered a 1.2 TSI Elegance. I've now done1200 miles including a few longer journeys (Portsmouth to London, Bournemouth) and whilst I can't speak for what it would be like for driving from Fleet to Glasgow for the journeys I made I didn't find it wanting and I have absolutely no regrets (other than why did it take me six months to get round to ordering one?).

How much horsepower you need or want is always going to be a personal choice but whatever you decide to get, I think you will be very happy with it. They are truly a fun car to own.

They are still building, but engine choice is limited.  So no 1.4tsi or 1.8Tsi.

If you want a petrol it's 1.2tsi only.

I also beleive some of the lower powered diesel version have been pulled too, including the 110bhp 2.0 4x4.

Greenline still availble though.

Indeed - and even on a Yeti the depreciation is much more significant than the fuel costs.

I would always stick to buying from a main dealer. There really isn't much difference in price between a broker and a dealer these days and at least you can sit down and talk with a dealer and not a pushy telephone only rep at a broker. Had an unpleasant experience with a long gone out of business broker a few years ago. Luckily I wasn't left out of pocket but I never received my car and suffice to say I shall never be blinded by on-line "bargains" again.

I had been looking for sometime to try and find a low mileage model but it had

to have DSG and the panoramic sunroof, preferably Elegance version for the

leather and Xenon headlights. DSG limits you to the 1.2 petrol or 140 diesel.

Almost impossible until I spotted a 140 demonstrator at a local dealer. Not a great

fan of diesel and fuel consumption is not a concern but it ticked all the other boxes

so I bought it. Lovely car with plenty of go when you need it. No regrets.

If I had a choice I would prefer a larger engined petrol or diesel version but you

have to take what you can get! Maybe the facelift will introduce some new DSG

engines.

All the best with whatever you chose.

Hi I went from a Fabia Vrs to A 140 Elegance and loved it - I then went to a Octavia 140 DSG estate to get more boot space but the wife found it difficult to get in and out of the Octy because of arthritis So - Back to the Yeti - this time I got a 170 elegance but in manual ( I should have got a DSG on reflection - I find very little difference in both MPG or performance  - If they bring a Yeti out with a bigger boot it will be a 140 DSG I get abour 36 to 38 MPG on average but 44 ish on a run

Regards

Mike

I previously owned a 140 SE and have now got a 170 Elegance.

The difference in power is noticeable, and due to this, requires less gear changing. If you drive enthusiastically, then the bigger brakes stopping power is welcomed.

As regards the spec level, its personal choice. I didn't want leather or xenons originally, so went for an SE.

I now would be without the lights and leather.

I have only done 2500 miles in the 170, so can't really comment yet on mpg. 140 used to get about 42 average.

170 currently gives about 38-42. Also road tax, and insurance are cheaper for 170.

All depends on budget and priorities

I've an appointment on Monday with my local Skoda Dealership, what sort of discount should I be looking for?

I'm thinking of the 2.0 TDI CR DPF DSG Elegance, with a Folding Front Passenger Seat and Black Magic Pearlescent Paint.

I don't need a 4X4 but the only other Elegance option with DSG is the 1.2 TSi, I already have a 1.2 TSi manual but want a Yeti with a bit more poke.

Hi you should go online and check the price on say drivethedeal that way you will have some indication as to what you should get.

Are you sure?

According to the DVLA the VED band for the 170 manual and the 140 manual is the same (G) - admittedly the 140 DSG is higher but as no 170 DSG is available its not a fair comparison.

The 170 DSG is now available and the CO2 is 5 g/km less than the 140 DSG, not to mention the mpg is higher

I don't see a 170 DSG on the Skoda website.
