A car for less than

Hi guys,

A long story short I've decided i want a house so my beloved mk2 fabia vrs has got to go! Now i want to know if you guys had £2000 to spend on a car for you to use daily and wont get bored of in two minutes what would you go for?

I don't really do a lot of miles, (250 a week max) so I'm looking at a petrol really, i don't want a golf as i think they all look the same, but i am 21 so insurance does come into it quite a lot still.

Ive considered clio 172/182 or mk1 octavia vrs, has any body on here own both of those? If so let me know what you prefer!

Just wanted to see if you guys can think of something i've not thought about!

Thanks

Adam

What is insurance going to cost you on other cars, because many young drivers seem to get quite good prices on a Twincharger.

Clio seems like a good call. How much to insure for you ??

But i must say they all look the same, nice but all the same,  just like all cars look like cars of the same make look the same.

so 250 miles a week @ 40 mpg = £40 a week.

250@ 35 mpg = £46

250@30 mpg = £54

but

250 @ 50 mpg of a diesel is about £33.

Maybe look at a pretty nippy VW even a Golf, Skoda or Seat TDI.  maybe cheaper insurance and fuel costs,

check out the road tax costs as well when looking.

You can not save money when buying a house by down grading a car,

if your replacement car drinks fuel and fuel starts going up in price again.

Also once committed to the New House, you have an older unreliable car that starts costing money to keep running.

Or just come MOT time.

Perhaps not what you're thinking but I picked up a Felicia recently for £500 with no rust, a years MOT and only 42,000 miles. It doesn't use much fuel and works like clockwork. For proper budget motoring you can't do no wrong.

There are lots of wonderful big old cars for sale at silly low prices because people are put off by running costs. £2000 doesn't buy you much of a "respected" car (a Volvo or BMW for example) so I think I'd throw caution to the wind and bag myself a big old Jaguar or something like a 740i.

Renault Clio sport if small but fun car needed, 182 with

possibly xenons can be had for that with haggling.

Octy mark 1 vRS if more size required.  Plenty of looked after

ones on here for that sort of bread.

I know they are what you suggested but in all honesty

I can't think of another 2.0 hooligan that works for that budget.

Insurance on my fabia is around £65 a month, 182 is around £85 a month and oct vrs £90 a month!

Without going into my finances to much, my car is currently on finance, and i also have a dreaded credit card (champagne lifestyle, beer wages come to mind) so the idea is to get rid of my car and have a small loan to try and become debt free. The monthly repayments on a loan are £70 cheaper than just my car payments!

Deposit wise for the house i already have.

First off you have the deposit for a house maybe earning little interest,

but are you paying interest to pay your car insurance monthly?

You have Finance on a car, can that be paid off or done cheaper, then look at Mortgages.

Not saying waste the Deposit, but stop paying possibly high interest on Borrowing where you can.

Get proper financial advice,

because getting rid of finance on a car to then get finance in the form of a Loan without any security,

is maybe going to go against you when trying to get a loan to Buy a home.

It is still an Outgoing.

The years roadtax on the vRS is £140 (£77), Can do 40 mpg if you want. no surprise costs coming, the car will be running for a few years to come. (Have you checked how little the vRS might actually currently be worth?)

how much is the Road Tax on the other cars, and can you get 40 mpg or better?

You give up the car and pay off cards, then the old car goes wrong and you need to use the cards again.

Many of us will have the T Shirt.

George, thanks for your honest advise!

House deposit is not touchable (been left in a will with a clause) so that does rule that idea out!

I wont be buying a house until next year, just trying to get my finances a bit straighter than they are now! As i will have to sell the car either now or just before i get the house! But anyways back on track! Anyone got any other cars to suggest??

Fiesta ZS.

1.6 with 100bhp, mint condition ones are around 2k mark, group 8, fun as hell as i've been in 100's. easy to tune if you want to go down that route and cheap as chips to maintain and work on.

Only down side is rust but as long as you have a look undernieth and at the arches you'll be fine, not really a common problem either. zsoc.com is a really good site for info if your interested (i'm a member).

As above, Corolla T Sport. Reliable, stupidly fast, very cheap to insure, Yamaha designed/built engine, quite a sleeper too, and if driven correctly you can hit 40mpg. No common issues, brakes can stick if not used, but all round a great car to drive. And they'res not many about now

I was in the same boat and I bought a celica t sport. Cracking car, great reliability, good looks, has nice options like leather seat and digital climate control. 189 bhp not too bad either!

Nice alternative but the Celicas command a premium haha. Ideal if you've got a larger budget but not as practical.

I'd talk to your IFA about taking out a loan within 12 months of wanting to take out a mortgage. Mortgage companies want to look at the stability of your personal finances when considering offering you one, and it may (note, it's not a certainty) count against you when you come to trying to get a mortgage promise.

If the car has to go in order to get a house, I'm assuming you've already decided that the monthly payments on your Fabia make it impossible to also pay your monthly mortgage installments?

306 GTi-6

Was going to suggest 306 TD. I know people that have run them to the moon and back and hardly lost money on them.

Hmm corolla doesn't really do it for me! I like the gti6's but the interior is a bit dated for me! As much as I love my skodas the 182 is looking seriously tempting!

With regards to loans that's sorted now and should affect my mortgage applications

Mate has a 172 Cup, needed a bit of work to start with and a new exhaust since but they like it and it's been reliable for them.

Are you looking at the facelifts?

The pre-facelift is ugly but the facelift is a nice looking car

Complete q car too! They are soo quick its unbelievable! Whack a k+n typhoon on it and your really struggling to find a better sounding car!

I would put my old one down as my fav car i've had and i've had a few!

Drive one and you'll fall in love, a 182 is a completely inferior car, plus its a bit of a chav bucket

I like the PFL, its the ultimate sleeper lol. Granted the FL does have a better interior and more kit. I've just bought another one lol.
