Buying an Elegance but want SatNav

Featured Replies

Please can someone advise

How much would it cost to buy and how long to fit   (ie do i need to purchase any extra bits, Cables etc..)

Im looking at the Amunsden or the Colombus

Do these both display directions in the dash between the speed and rev dials ?

Looking to spend £400 tops

Im ok with retrofitting headunits - had one in my old car

Without having any knowledge on what you'd need regarding the parts to retrofit it, I can tell you that at the moment here in Greece if you go to order a new car and want an Amunsden fitted from factory you have to add 750 Euros while it would be 2290 Euros for a Columbus. That would be 645 GBP (Amunsden) and 1968 GBP (Columbus) respectively. I am not sure if that would be the only thing you might need to add as there is a good chance you gonna need Bolero sound system which in that case would need another 450 Euros ie 387 GBP. Please anyone with more knowledge on the subject correct me if I am wrong regarding what needs to be added.

2011 1.8 elegance

Hi I have a 1.2 elegance and purchased a Columbus sat nav from eBay a2013 model for approx 450.00 only took a few minutes to fit look on you tube for video. You will need a new surround which I purchased from Rainworth skoda for about 25.00 including delivery,Icould let you have part no.ijust removed bolero and fitted. Gps and plugged back in.,if you want central display you will need another member with CD to reset for you . Mine works fine no problems at all.

Columbus: c.£450-500

Fascia: £5-75

GPS antenna: supplied with Columbus or c.£5

Coding with VCDS: beer money

Straight swap for existing Skoda unit except for locating the GPS antenna and the fascia.

Coding should only take a few minutes and will result in the sat nav instructions appearing on the Maxidot display.

Is maxidot the the small display between dials?

and

Can i just leave the gps antenna behind the unit under the dash?

What does it have in it now?

The elegance spec when I got mine in 2011 had the Amunsden SatNav as standard!

Yes. It is the white information display. Not the green LCD one on the lesser spec'd models.

Fitting the head unit is too easy.

There are quite a few dodgy ones on eBay, so chose your supplier carefully.

Or you could use oemretrofits who would supply and fit. Google them.

What you won't get is the voice activated part of the Columbus without some chopping of cables and stuff.

The VCDS coding will also get it to work with the MFSW if you have one.

You need one of the later Columbus units, not a 1zo but I believe a 3To one or later.

Yes mounted to a metal cross member.

Yes

......your local Skoda Dealer

Personally I use my iphone (& Google Maps) for sat-nav purposes, I've bought a small cradle so that I can see the map/instructions displaying on the phone screen, and the voice commands come through the speakers because of the in-car bluetooth.

Good enough for me

A very handy cheap workaround granted but unfortunately I like my gadgets and tech too much

Would have liked a built in Sat Nav but not at the price car manufacturers want, plus hassles when you need a map update. More than happy with a Garmin bought from Amazon which sits on the dash.

Map Updates are easy, just download on to SD Card

Word of warning.

I bought a Columbus on eBay, they even fitted it for free.

But it could not be updated to a later version and occasionally would think I was headed somewhere else.

Difficult to explain, but think starting in the correct place and being about 2degrees out on the direction of travel. So as you drove it got more wrong.

Also aftermarket fits do not have a roof antenna, they rely on just sticking the sat-searcher under the dash.

Wouldn't do that again.

Would buy a Garmin for £100.

This was raised in a thread within the last 3 weeks, and I don't think anyone found a LEGITIMATE way of doing it, other than in a dealers, who is entitled to charge you.

Correct, although I know someone who got a firmware and map update for free from the dealer when they were in for a service this month!

It pays to have a good relationship with your local dealer and also to ask...

The iPhone is great, but way too small to be read. An iPad yes, I could cope with that.

Problem with Google Maps is you need a data connection at some point as does Apple Maps which is better in my experience for turn by turn navigation. It seems to save the whole route when you program it. Google Maps might now, I never use either for navigation.

Personally I use either Navigon or TomTom depending on my mood if I don't want to use the Columbus.

But I don't have an iPad mount, and the iPhone 5's screen is too small for me to see properly.

I've been trying to get a firmware update out of my dealer for years!

There are several free Sat Nav apps for the iPhone (and probably iPad) that are pretty decent.

I've used NavFree which was flawed, but no more than TomTom or others.

Most dealers won't touch firmware (for some reason), but this guy had 7-digit postcode search after, so definitely had an upgrade.
