Twitching wipers

Featured Replies

Hi guys. Has anyone experienced their wipers moving about a cm or so when the ignition is turned in or off ? It doesn't happen all the time but I asked my local skoda dealer and they reckoned they are supposed to do that to free up any ice on the screen in the winter. Also my rear wiper works on it's own on start up sometimes.

This is a Skoda feature - they twitch every so often to prevent them from staying in the place and wearing out. It changes the final stop position so it isn't always in the same place.

^^^ that is right but shouldn't do it on startup.

If they are frozen to the screen when you start the car then all that will do is

damage them. Dealer talking BS as usual.

They are hoping you aren't intelligent enough to either know better

or find out otherwise.

Personally I find things like that massively insulting.

Audi does this too, but it's not on start up it's when you switch the wipers off.

They come to rest in an alternate position each time they are used and switched off.

(Or rest on intermittent)  But they shouldn't move when you switch on the car unless

of course you have left them switched on or possibly if left on auto if you have that facility.

^^ yes, you described it better than I did!

It's not every time but just on occasion if I turn the ignition on they move slightly and like I said sometimes when I turn the ignition off. It can be irritating.

My Superb does it - both at ignition on and off stages.

When switched off the wipers raise a cm or two so that moisture rolls off the blade. My wipers do not go back to normal resting position until the car moves forward a tad. That is on a model year 12 car. I guess they assume that you would (should) have cleared the screen before moving forward.

Mine does it on start up also.

Mine move up sometimes on startup, I think they are in auto, not experience rain yet since I took delivery of the car! Heated front windscreen should stop them freezing to the screen.

If you start your car with reverse gear engaged and auto wipers on, that might explain the rear wiper activating.

my octavia does it when you turn the ignition off.

my octavia does it when you turn the ignition off.

As does my Audi.

I think you'll find that it is to prevent a 'set' in the windscreen wiper rubbers, they don't actually move across the screens, more of a twitch in the arm causing the blade to 'lean' the other way. Nothing to do with use of the wipers.

Mine also twitches AND I get a rear wiper sweep sometimes, with the gearbox in neutral and wiper stalk in the 'off' mode.

I don't understand why you would get a sweep of the rear wiper with the wiper stalk set to 'off', but you can enable automatic rear wiping through the maxidot, which means you get an occasional sweep of the rear wiper when the front wipers are operating.

The auto rear wipe works as it should, it is just a(n apparently) random single sweep on a dry day with no lights on or wipers on or anything.  The last time it happened was a couple of days ago - I was never going to be in reverse as I always reverse into spaces and there was a brick wall behind me!

Like the man with stones in his front brakes whose only mod was front mud flaps, I think you've answered your own question?

OK, so after a short and unscientific process I may have spotted a pattern to my rear wiper sweep.

I had my car serviced a couple of days ago and then drove it home in the rain.  I had the rear wiper on intermittent and noticed that on every sweep the wiper would 'bounce' back up an inch or so at the end of the sweep.  I thought I remembered that before the service it would only do this little 'kick' every 4 or 5 sweeps and I wondered if they had updated some software.  Anyway, I got home and parked it, switching off the rear wiper and front wipers (lights stayed in "Auto").  The rear wiper remained parked in the 'kicked-up' position.

This morning I get in and turn the ignition on.  The wipers were all 'off' and the lights in 'Auto'.  The car was in neutral.  The weather was dry.  However the rear wiper did a single sweep and then parked itself in the fully-down position.  I wonder, therefore, if the rear wiper does not have the capability of running 'backwards' and so it does this single sweep in order to restore the wiper to the lower parking position at the first opportunity?

I shall conduct a more thorough experiment and report on my findings.  There may be a paper published and no doubt the Nobel committee will be in touch.

My 2010 Yeti does the little twitch of the wipers on start up / power on. I regard it as a rather endearing feature. Like Yeti is giving me a little "Hello" wave of his own. (See "Yeti Spotting - result").......

Anyone know where I left my sanity by any chance?

In the dealers when you bought the Yeti?

I was going to ask this very question after noticing ours does it on shutdown. I shan't bother now :D

Mine does it too.

Thank you Andyp for bringing the issue up, i always thought it was a minor fault and didnt even bother to ask....
