Suspension / Steering issue

Featured Replies

Another thing

The front glass is so thin and I think not laminated

I even was looking at a friends hyundai elantra glass and found it about 3 layers at least and much thicker than ours :(

Only the windscreen will be laminated.

Well here is my two pence worth:

Picked by the new 1.4TSI Elegance Estate DSG this afternoon. Fitted with Dunlop Sports Maxx on 17 inch.

Run back home was about 15 miles, 50% on motorway. Very windy but dry.

Car tracked dead straight despite the gusts. Did not seem overly nervous over rough road surfaces.  I agree that it does not feel quite as planted as the old Octy2 (which was a comparatively heavy beast) but nothing to cause me any concern or alarm,.

Can't really comment definitively on the road noise -  seems OK but then I'm used to the old 2.0 PD grumbling away to itself and drowning out the road noise! The 1.4TSI is spookily quiet by comparison.

Early days and not a long drive, so maybe not a good test. But if it continues to behave the same I will have no complaints.

I'll report further if anything changes my opinion.

Yes i meant the windscreen

Minimoke

Maybe cause your car is estate

could be related to aerodynamics or weight

The windscreen is laminated, as on all modern (made in the last 50 years or more) cars.

When i looked at the elantra i found laminated written on it and the glass was a thck layer then thin layer of something like plastic and a third layer not very thick

While octy glass is a very thin 1 layer glass

The above is by eye inspection so i may be tottaly wrong :)

Laminated glass comprises two layers of glass with a plastic membrane between them. As above, all modern cars have a laminated windscreen (denoted by the marking AS1) and it is increasingly common to be able to get laminated side windows too. I had them on my previous Volvo

OK that's it, an ex VW master tech drove my car today and confirmed that it drives as I have said all along. That's it as far as I am concerned. I have booked a hire car and will be refusing to drive this car again. Watch this space!

This car is still vibrating and generally misbehaving. If you remember, a while back they replaced the nearside front wheel bearing and drive shaft, the tech said that the shaft was locking as you rotate the wheel by hand. I have just jacked up the front tonight and found exactly that. If you rotate the nearside wheel it sticks at certain points, the offside wheel rotates smoothly. Now the tech originally said he thought the gearbox / diff was faulty, but changed his mind when he removed the driveshaft and the bearing in the diff felt OK. Tonight l also noticed a fair amount of free play if you rotate the wheel back and forth, and you can hear a noticeable metallic clink as the diff takes up the slack. When driving you can feel this play being taken up / released and I now believe this is the reason the car goes off line slightly when you accelerate / decelerate. I am coming to the conclusion that I do indeed have a faulty diff / gearbox. The fact is it's worse than ever.

Have you ever attempted, in writing, to reject this car?

Yes it was refused.

VW arranged for their own independent inspection after the ombudsman became involved. The inspection took place on Friday. I have no wish to jump the gun on this one but lets just say I am quietly confident that the fault has been found. I will update as things progress. Most reliable car of 2014 ...pants!

I would also be expecting Skoda to complete a thorough investigation of the other steering & suspension components. The failed bearing is, for me, just a symptom of a greater problem. Bearings don't usually fail after such a short period of time.

You were so right!

I hope you get this sorted, and a proper apology from all involved.

It would appear that the differential has a manufacturing defect, if you spin the nearside wheel with the car jacked up, it basically locks up approx. every 1/3 of a turn and actually springs back in the opposite direction. It is believed to be faulty gearing as opposed to the bearing itself. This is causing the constant vibration that, with time, has become much worse and is also affecting how the car handles. I am awaiting the final outcome regarding rejection of the vehicle.

And how many vehicle inspections and visits to the dealers did that take to diagnose?

When I was servicing cars one of the tests you always did after checking for bearing and ball joint play was a spin of the wheels to check they all span freely without any odd noises or binding taking place.

Just goes to show that 'mechanics' nowadays can only diagnose a fault if the computer says there is one - a classic case of 'Computer says No'

Way too many, I am not sure if it was a case of not wanting to find the problem TBH!

Wow, a solution finally...nearly! (Fingers crossed) I hope you get the rejection, and if you still want a Skoda you ought to get one for free after all this.... Well, a nice and hefty upgrade/ discount at least.

You would hope so, but I don't think VW group are the most generous company from what I've experienced so far!

VWFS have had a report in their possession for over a fortnight that states my car is potentially dangerous, so why the hell are they letting me continue to drive it?! There will be a massive court case if it fails and causes myself or anyone else any injury or loss!

Why are you still paying for it?.... That's the question!

That's a good question, but I had no wish to give them the upper hand.
