Suspension / Steering issue

Featured Replies

I appreciate wheel balance seems to have been ruled out but I recently had to have one of my vRS wheels re-balanced after the car 'felt wrong' and I began getting vibration through the chassis and also through the steering, despite the issue being on a rear wheel. This was at speeds around 40-50 mph. Didn't try it above this because I didn't like the way it was handling. If wheel balance hasn't actually been checked I would definitely advise having it checked. If it's been checked and all's well, I apologise for raising again.

I know a really good Hunter alignment place in Oldham as well if you want a full geometry check doing, Drury Lane Services. If there is anything out of spec Paul will find it!

Mine is more like the road surface can be felt through the steering wheel at low speeds, but it's like something on the car is loose so that the vibration is not being absorbed. At 70 - 80 all feels fairly smooth except it's very sensitive to irregularities in the road and wind. You have to keep awake as it's prone to just suddenly veering off at that speed.

Not a problem, just let me know.

Much sympathy for your situation.... Having taken as many steps as you have to get to the bottom of it, if I were you I would ask to speak to the dealer princable (head honcho) explain your very clear safety worries and lack of confidence in the car.

As a effectively "scared to drive your car" customer he should react with a full investigation to find the issue or finally put your mind at ease.

Is there a way you can record the symptoms ie video?

Unfortunately having paid for a independent inspection and the car passing you have closed some doors to rejecting the car as there is no evidence, hence the reason to try and record what going on.

The other option is to use the comsumer direct, the uk govenment agency will assist and advise you and help you fight the case.

Good luck.

Video evidence is a good idea.  Can you park the car on a slope and film the loose O/S wheel?

Did the independant Engineer manage to replicate the loose wheel or didn't he try?  I suspect the latter - especially if the symptom only occurs when parked on a slope.

The engineer didn't really 'tug' on anything or remove any covers underneath the car. It was more of a visual confirmation that everything was in the right place and no obvious accident damage. I didn't mind at the time as I fully expected him to investigate further having test driven the car and felt the problem. Of course that didn't happen as he did not recognise any problem with the car during the test drive.

Well guys,  sorry to resurrect an old thread! My car continued to get worse, to the point where it was really unstable, with lots of vibration. Took it to a different dealer last week having done 9000 miles. The mechanic drove it and said it felt rough as hell. It felt rough even on a smooth road surface. Straight into the workshop, lo and behold, a faulty front nearside wheel bearing. Why nobody had found it before is a mystery. Anyway there's no spares in the country so the part is on back order.

One of the best threads I've followed on this forum. Glad you sorted it out.

Hopefully a priority order!

I just looked on etka and the part numbers are identical to the mk7 Golf.

Wonder if you could have 'popped across the road' as it were...?

Yes I believe they have raised it as a priority. Although after the email I've just sent to SUK and VWFS I can't wait for Monday.

You mentioned a loose feeling wheel back in October, I surprised it's took this long to diagnose, failed wheel bearings are pretty obvious....

Yeah tell me about it. From day 1 when I bought the car in July. However it became a lot more obvious with time. It wasn't noisy like a worn bearing. I don't think there was any obvious play in it at first either, it just behaved odd when driving. I am still surprised the professionals didn't pick it up on the test drives, especially as I was so adamant the car was faulty.

Leon, I think I'd want a real good look and preferably, a good professional's opinion on that old bearing just to check it was faulty and not worn due to another fault.  Could just save you more ball-ache in the future.

Hope it is just the bearing but, I've dunno, it don't sound quite right to me.

I have started discussion with SUK as I think that other parts of the car could have have suffered over 9000 miles of unnecessary wear and tear or fatigue due to this problem. They said they would keep the bearing for me to inspect.

I just re-read this thread.

Yes and the very email has been sent this afternoon requesting the very sum from said inspection company. :giggle:

Shocking that so many different "professionals" missed it for so long. I'd be demanding a refund from the independent inspector though. I have had a bad apple car before and hated that I was made to feel I was the problem.

I would hope now SUK will have a dealer thoroughly check the front steering/suspension components for possible damage/premature wear.

Well guys I have sent a long emailed letter to SUK and VWFS. Now I don't want to say too much yet as I don't want to prejudice any outcome. Needless to say this is not the end of the story by a long chalk. It may end up that yet another low mileage used Octavia becomes available on the forecourts but we'll have to see.

I hope not, the old romantic in me would like a happy ending - driving best car you ever owned.

Incidentally what checks do you suggest?

as a minimum id want both wheel bearings replaced, they may be from the same batch, and yoyu dont want the otherside to fail after the replacement of the first one

Is it allowed to post here a document regarding the electromechanical steering that i have found?

please do. I'd fnacy a read of that but it might be worth putting it in a new thread?

This is it. If someone consider it is not the right place...feel free to movit it.

I think is more evolved than before, but it can also put some problems with the 0 setpoint of the geometry vs the 0 position of the electronic part/motor
