Need a tutorial for removing calipers and replacing disks?

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says. I had a rear caliper changed last year so I've now got one silver caliper and 3 green ones! Plus my NSR disk has a groove all the way around and I think the caliper is stuck on (how easy are they to free off?) I thought I'd paint the calipers all round and replace the rear disks and pads this weekend. I've just never done it before so would appreciate it if anyone has a link to a tutorial. I don't want to start taking the calipers off and then not have a special tool to get them back on or something like that.

There is a tutorial I have used in the Fabia 1 useful thread section, knock yourself out!

A calliper rewind tool is required if you are doing the rears and you will need to bleed your brakes after.... I suggest a Gunson Eezibleed kit as you can use this on your own. (I've used this and the traditional method I would go and buy this kit again if I had to)

Obviously there is a lot more to it than that, but that's where the fun is, learning!

I've looked through the links in the Extremely Useful Fabia thread and can't see anything to do with removing brake calipers. Am I looking in the right place? Perhaps you could be kind enough to post a link :-)

I did find a useful thread about the return springs for the rear caliper. That could be why mine are stuck on. Replaced the rear NS last year and the rear OS is sticking now!

I've also just looked on eBay for a caliper wind back tool. Do I need one specifically for the Fabia? Some of the listings on eBay look like they sell wind back tools for certain makes.

My bad, it was in the tutorial section....

I do believe you need one that will fit the Fabia. I'm at work so I can't post you the link of the one I bought to do mine off Ebay, sorry fella. It was about £12 or something. I also paid a couple of quid for the VW Sharan Calliper return springs you mentioned as I had that issue.

Thanks man. I've just been reading it and some other useful threads in the tutorial section :-)

So if I was to remove my rear calipers, paint them and change the disks, I'd then have to bleed the system to before I put the brakes back on?

That also makes me think; If I was short on time and wanted to remove the front calipers another weekend to do them, would I have to bleed the system again when I put the calipers back on?

It's much easier to paint them when they're still on the car to save having to take them off and bleed them, depends what kind of job you want to do on them ?

I just want to tidy them up a bit but I'm pretty sure I need to rewind that stuck rear caliper, unless I can free it off any other way? I'm just hoping one of those springs will sort it out. I'd also want to swap the disks and pads myself so I think I do need to take the calipers off mate.

Each time you remove the brake caliper, you will probably put air into the system as you take off the brake hose, so a bleed will be needed.... but only once it is all back together again ;)
