Getting the best deal...is now the time?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

After a new Skoda Yeti 1.6 Greenline SE.   Had a test drive this week and loved it.  There we're some very good offers on the 110ps diesel but having a heavily modified Defender td5 I just need a quality vehicle that's cheap to fuel, tax, insure and allow me to garage the Land Rover.    A Yeti is exactly what I need and the only vehicle I REALLY like in comparison to my green oval obsession.

There are a few deliberations to make on what is going to get me the best deal.

1) Obviously I know that going into the dealer with a "right, if we can cut a deal today I'll buy a Yeti" ethos puts you in a stronger position to buy the vehicle but with the great 0% finance packages,  which I would need,  I feel this may effect my power of movement on the RRP greatly.

With the finance and service offers available now, I feel the Whatcar target prices should be taken with a pinch of salt from the RRP.  With only 750 Yeti builds left the time to customise, pick and choose the factory fitted extras over the are SE are slim.   It's a case of if it's in, it's in from what I have been informed.

(Cut to the chase) With the Facelift coming in, is now a time to bag a bargain even when taken with the 0% offer to boot?

2)  Compared to what happened with all other facelift models, do you think the 0% will continue? In essence this should allow me to save a fair few grand more to drop the 30% max deposit to help in the long run if I do have to wait.

Saw a few people boasting about the huge discount (£1600) they had on their Yeti's but not sure if the car was paid in full hence commanding the best bargaining position ( in my opinion )

I do like the look of the facelift AND current model obviously however at this moment in time the clock is ticking in regards to current Yeti availability. Easy either way.   Quality motors regardless of the controversial changes (yes... I'm a forum lurker ;-)

Any advice welcome.  Thankyou

Surely you are in the best place to be in, you like the current and FL cars and you aren't desperate to buy. In your position I would decide what couldn't i live without, what are the extras I would like and what is the deal that works for me. Try two or three dealers and if you can't get the deal you can walk away and wait for the FL in you spec. They can't shoot you for saying "I This is what I want and this is what I'm prepared to pay otherwise I'll try down the road" and if you keep it friendly you can always go back if the first one is in fact the best deal. Good luck.

Thanks Paul, I've been completely straight with the dealer.  Good communication and clear so far.  They know I'm not in a rush yet I do feel like I want a bargain and feel like I can command one at this late stage.

With the amount Whatcar (even though I understand we're late in the stages now for talking about throwing in free kit and finance perks) say to knock off my alternate angle was going to be go for Bluetooth and Amundsen nav over the SE trim with some other cheaper add on's.   With that out the window due to lack of customisation at the factory I'm not sure... Could always see what they have Available in the greenline in relation to colour etc. There's really not much mods you can do like with the other specs i.e. Upgrade wheels etc.

Had some feedback from Facebook...

"No probs. I have ordered a CR170 elegance 4x4. I bought the car through www.drivethedeal.com hence the big discount and 0%. Unfortunately since ordering mine skoda's are not now available through drive the deal."

Ship sailed maybe...

Hi James,

You may be able to still get some sort of discount and 0% finance by phoning around some dealers outside of your local area. Some dealers are more willing to give a discount than others. For instance my local dealer would only offer me a £500 discount OR 0%, not both, despite me telling them the level of discount available through DTD, so buying my car through DTD was a no brainer.

Take the best deal but do not deny yourself the best car-when you compare the cost of an optioned SE+ with an Elegance already built the greater dicount on a stock model will be easier to achieve, divide it by the number of payments and the difference may be slight. If you have been navigating by starlight with the aid of old style halogen glow worms trust me the xenons alone are worth the money!

I would have thought the 110 2wd and Greenline 2wd very similar in cost and driving characteristics, except you can get more factory options on the 110 and more economy out of the Greenline. Might be worth leaving that choice open in your negotiations...

3 weeks ago I placed my order and managed to get 0%, free servicing, free mud flaps & -1226.67£ off before VAT.  But it was hard work.

I was offered -1800£ prior to the 0% being introduced.  This was rescinded when I requested 0%.  0% with discount still works out in total.

For the L&K with 1500£ of extras so would expect some give on price the higher up you go.

Spec up a Greenline SE with the options you want. Decide what discount you would be happy to go with, stick with that number then go to the dealer and see if they'll match the number (number inc. 0%/3 years servicing/etc.). If they can't/won't, go for a FL a few months down the line. The 0% deals go on a cyclical rolling programme but the Yeti isn't always available on them, so you'll be taking a chance I guess.

Fwiw, I was aware of the FL coming out, so I used this in my negotiations. Having said that, I'm not a great haggler (even though this is the biggest purchase bar the house!), so I got a 5% discount. I thought that with the 3 years' servicing/breakdown/ensurance (didn't think the latter was all that but it includes hire car and legal cover, so it'll reduce the cost of our insurance, as we always option these and they cost £30-£40) and 0% finance over 42 months, this was a good deal. I'll have the money to pay off the finance after this time, so this will be my run-up to retirement motor. I guess you have to look at the whole deal and if it fits your needs, I would say go with a pre-FL. From the stuff online I've read on the FL, it isn't going to be any more fuel efficient or have that much more kit, so if the aesthetics don't bother you, go with the best deal.

Thanks Steve, I have spoken to another garage under the same 'umbrella' name and they are also in the pipeline now.  Told them about your deal and they weren't surprised and seemed more open to knocking some brass off the car.

The difference between the 110 2wd and the greenline is the transferbox ratios (a "longer 5th).

Although it has the same gearbox the actual gearing is higher.  I haven't driven the most popular so called "bread and butter" 110 Yeti but some people say it feels like it could do with a 6th like on the 140's.  Not that it struggles but would be nice to drop it another peg.

The 5th on the 1.6 greenline was very impressive.  70 mph up a steady motorway incline in 5th and it was pulling happily and almost asleep at just over 2000 revs.

For me when I previously owned an Audi A4 avant with the same VAG 2.0 tdi 6 speed setup it was very similar.  Like I say, impressed.

Good to know. Thankyou Coopers.  I may quote you on that

My thoughts exactly.   They know I'm easy either way as I will end up with a Yeti in either form.  Although there isn't an SE+ in the greenline the next up would be a Greenline Elegance (I think it's available in the elegance)  The only niggle with the greenline is the lack extras you can opt for due to the strict energy saving.  If it was me, I'd have the Matterhorns on the thing (aftermarket) and try and copy the Adventure....which visually seems like the Skoda version of my 90...ish

ps: Thanks for all the replies so far.  Very helpful.

To be fair the only things missing from the Greenline SE I really like is bluetooth and DAB... I guess a basic nav system like the Amundsen would be nice... anything else would be aesthetic i.e. Mudflaps, silver roof rails over the standard black ones (if thats an option).  Need to go home and have another look at the brochure.

Maybe pushing for an Elegance could be an angle too.  Will have to look at the prices.

UPDATE: Contacted Carfile today.     http://www.carfile.net/    Can still supply me with the Greenline SE of choice.  Will be in contact to see if they can add any extras such as nav etc if needed tomorow.

As it stands including metallic, thinking either Steel grey or Silver...    £16,763 OTR

Is that a factory order a a new car from stock? What sort of discount is that from list price?

List price is £19400 I think.

So about 13.5% discount.

Thats a new factory build. The Steel Grey isn't in stock. Will check on the Silver tomorrow as I quite liked it at the dealership I called at on the way home .

14% discount for cash order. Rrp otr is £19330 inc the metallic extra. Does anyone have the Basic nav? Is it any good?

Thats a very good discount! I wasn't in a position to buy cash hence my discount being less but taking advantage of the 0%. Didnt spec the sat nav myself as i really wouldn't use it enough to justify. Plus got google maps on my phone if i really need sat nav.

My thoughts exactly on the nav. The google maps on my phone is excellent with free live traffic updates. save some £ me thinks.

I did think that shops offering different deals depending on 0% or not, was illegal.

Or maybe I had a weird dream of seeing Watchdog or some such consumer advice programme... Basically if you negotiate a deal then say you want to take their 0% option and they want to renegotiate the terms it isn't a 0% deal. It's a deal where the fee for paying on a perceived 0% deal is baked in elsewhere.

I took that as an understanding of the perks of 0% finance.  Skoda like all companies are out to make money.  I just took that as a given.  In some ways, I'm not sure how paying the full wad from the off is something that Skoda would reward with a heavily discounted price.  Every company must like finance with the inevitable higher rate and the end AND the PCP method of finance which means most people take a fancy to a newer model and don't retain the vehicle.

That's the real time saver; I used to think it was always wrong, out of time or useless. Delighted to discover it's all as accurate as these things can possibly ever be. Alternative routes calculated in split seconds.

I think I'll be placing the order today.  How much is it to add Bluetooth connection to an SE Greenline?

 Thanks!
