Hi, dodgy Fabia hope for easy fixes.

Featured Replies

Hi peeps, just got my second Skoda, my first was a Felicia and she never let me down in the 3 and 1/2 years I had her, Now I have a Fabia 02 which I bought on Saturday from a somewhat dodgy used car garage locally. I should have been more suspicious when he let me drop the price, as I have found it difficult to get a good deal. Anyway, problems;

The front passenger electric window does not work and was unplugged when I opened the fitting, Furthermore, the window is lose in the door and is being held secure with a scraper which is unceremoniously sticking in the rubber edging. Any ideas regarding fixing it myself or going to Skoda? Is there anything difficult to do when replacing the motor if it is that?

The worrying problem is the temperature light, that has decided to come on after 30 seconds of starting the engine. I have checked the coolant level which is ok and also the oil level. The temperature gauge indicates about half when running warm. The matrix is fine, as well as the air con and the car has recently been MOT'd. I'm hoping that it is just a faulty sensor, any ideas?

Check the fuses for the windows Fuse 46 25Amp farthest row on the right, third from bottom.

Coolant sensor could be faulty, try giving the metal probes a clean off first.

Loose window may just be that it's a roll pin missing, pennies from the dealer.

Hi and welcome aboard.

Thanks Lee for your reply. I have not done anything yet; too tired when I get in. :whew:  I do have some more symptoms though to help diagnosis.

When the temperature reaches just over and I mean a tad over halfway, then the warning light comes on (the one that looks like a thermometer). Also, this morning I turned the heating up to halfway from cold to de-mist the windscreen. When I turned it back to cold, it went to full heat and only after I continued my journey to work (after picking someone up) and back to cruising speed, did the temperature return to cold. I am hoping still that it is just a sensor, any Ideas?

No probs. IMO I think you need to get a fault code scan, pretty simple really. Search on Briskoda for VCDS owners list. I think there are two or three in your area who'll do it for a beer token or two. I'll also see if this can be moved to the MkI Fabia section where you'll get more info than I can provide. All the best.

My tempt gauge came on every 30 seconds too. I slightly overfilled the coolent expansion tank to see if it was the sensor and bingo, it still did it. so it was the sensor.
Change the expension tank as the sensor is a pain to get out and its pretty cheap for the whole thing. anything from a golf, polo ect ect will fit. be good to flush and renew the whole coolent fluid anyway.

Hope that helps.

You can get a brand new tank from dealer for about 15-20, takes about half and hour to do, there's a very good guide on here with pics etc

I would suspect that the window has a broken wire. To confirm this I would plug it back in, remove the scraper whilst a helper holds the window up and, try the window. The helper is to ensure the window doesn't drop into the door. A horrible grating you will get will confirm the diagnosis. If it was the motor there would be no need to hold the window up with a scraper. The easiest way to fix is too change the lot, including the panel as everything is fixed to it. You can get wire repair kits, though but I'm told it is rather fiddly and requires riveters and things.

There is an old Skoda dealer at Riseley, WJH Motors, just north of Bedford who I have bought cars from. He has never sold me a duff one and I think he is pretty good, and reasonable, on the workshop side if you don't feel up to changing the window mechanism. My garage in Kettering charged me 30 min labour but I had already taken the trim panel off.

If it's an 02 Fabia then the door carrier will be bolted on, and so a repair kit a much easier affair :)

Thanks for all your help people, went to Skoda in the end; they charged me £134 to tell me I needed a new water pump which will cost £188 inc vat. I will shop around for that I think.......And the window regulator was quoted at just over £300. So I really need to think about that one, but the mechanic did wedge the door up for me, decent guy.

Look for a guide on here re the regulator pretty sure there is one and there's a fabia been broken.in the for sale section for the part.

Is cambelt due as you might as well renew that at same time as pump if it is. Again guide on here of you fancy saving some cash.

300 for a regulator...holy hell!

Euro car parts. Buy the whole regulator for £40. Replace it yourself. I did! Until I couldn't get the lock rod in and had to take it to the garage through frustration!

Ok thanks, had to undo fixed status; now it should read waiting for things to go wrong plus an extra worry. I took the car back to the used dealer and he said that he found that the HG had been done on it, but the previous owner had not done it properly. He said that he had skimmed the head and redone the HG. Anyway, driving along, I am not losing any coolant (water, I will change it for coolant soon) and the temperature is sitting just over half way regardless of revs. My worry now is the heater temperature; it does not stay constant, it kind of fluctuates but doesn't go really hot. If I change the temperature to cold say, It will not go cold until I turn up the dial then it goes cold, then I turn the dial to cold and it will stay cold until I rev a bit then it will warm up again but return to cold on its own. I think it will probably be the stat but I would be interested in peoples opinions and if it is an easy job. Please dont say its the HG still, I've had enough of these problems, and I am due to go on a 200 mile trip soon.
