Fixed Service Set Incorrectly: Can I get it changed back to variable?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Seeking a bit of advice. I've been running my 05 plate Octavia II 1.9TDI on variable service intervals since I bought it at 14 months old. I've been a relatively low mileage driver so that has meant two-yearly services. Last service was end of June. Just happened to check the service indicator today and I am pretty sure the dealer reset it to fixed intervals. Specifically, the mileage and days left to next service are consistent with 9400 miles (15000km) and 372 days (12x31 days) from when the car was in for its service. A search on the forum suggests this is the fixed interval. Another thing to chalk up on the list of things they didn't do properly along with not putting the dust caps back on the aircon when they regassed it...

My question is can I now get the car reset to variable indication and will the indication be meaningful given that it's about 2 months and 1300 miles since the service? I could just wait 2 years and have it serviced then but, due to a recent house move, I'm expecting to do more miles than previously so that doesn't seem very sensible. I've seen previous posts saying this could be done but talking about cars relatively fresh from the last service. Obviously I realise I'd have to go back in to the dealer to get that done but then I'd be expecting them to fix it for free as it is their fault it's wrong.

Regards

Matthew

Personally I'd go back to the dealer armed with your service record to show you've been on a variable service and ask them what they're playing at. As a matter of interest what type of service did they do last time- if they did a variable they have no leg to stand on, if they did a fixed ask them fro the proof that'swhat you (didn't) order?

It's not your responsibility to check they've done it correctly so they should sort it out for you

They may just have been lazy and reset the indicator via the dash

More than likely.

As said, check your invoices etc and if you'd paid for a LongLife service go inform them of their mistake.

Once it's on the diagnostic machine it'll take all of 5mins to recode it.

9400 miles for a diesel to be serviced!!!!!......I'd suggest to go back to the dealers and get that sorted.....

You can change it with VCDS, I can do it for you if the dealer isn't any help.  Gordon Lamb by any chance?

If it is Gordon Lamb in Spondon, Ryan is the only person in the service department who is worth dealing with.

Unfortunately as it was serviced two and a bit months ago, if you get it reset to variable now, it will actually go over due for a service when it finally tells you it needs a service.

So whatever you do, make sure they have put Longlife III oil in it, and keep an eye on the mileage....even if you get it reset. Variable servicing is normally 18,000 miles or 2 years.....whichever comes first....although this can be shortened by factors such as oil quality deteriorating or a large number of cold starts etc. When you get to 2 years or 18,000 miles get it serviced even if the indicator has not come on.

I'm not sure if that is correct, with VCDS you can change the time and distance independently, as well as the time since it was serviced.

Yes, but do you think the dealer will go to that trouble......I suspect they will just hit the reset button on their diagnostic machine.

I don't what can and can't be done with VAS, I was just saying what you can do with VCDS. Audi in derby set my dad's car to 10k or 2 years somehow.

Easy tiger! I wasn't arguing with what you said.

I didn't think you were.

Thanks for the replies. It definitely was a long life service. I got (invoiced for) Mobil One 5W30 longlife and they filled in the book and service reminder sticker with next service in 20000 miles or 2 years. I'll go in and get them to fix it. I'll ask them to adjust for the time and distance from the last service when they do.

It's entirely possible to adjust the time and mileage in VAS-PC or ODIS so that it remains correct. Although iirc, if they use the guided function for recoding service intervals it should just change that and keep everything else the same. You can manually input it though.

My Octy is on variable. The interval has varied from around 12-14k to me panicking because it was over 16k and I was going on holiday and thought I should get it done...

Rather than wait for the spanner to appear how do get an estimate to tell when the next one might be due?

Switch on the ignition but don't start the engine

Push the trip reset and hold - the trip initially resets to zero but comes back when you hold it in

After a few seconds the display will show miles/days to service
