Whistle or cricket noise on low revs

Featured Replies

Hi,

I picked my new citigo sport from the dealer on 140913 and the moment I drove off it made some funny whistle noise. At that point i thought that its one of the characteristics of a three cylinder engine however after a while it started to annoy me. Next morning when i started the car from cold the whistle was actually loud and after 10 minutes the noise died down.

I straight away took it to the dealer he had the car for a day and told me that they had a word with skoda tech team and they have told them that since the car has done only 150 miles therefore this is engine bedding noise and should go within 1000 miles.

This time when i drove off the noise wasnt there at all however later in the evening it started to make funny cricket noise at 1000 rev.

I am so confused as dont have any idea what to do. Has any one had this kid of issue? I have been through one of the whistle post however this noise is no way near the mild whistle noise i am experiencing.

Thanks

Saurabh

  • Hi, I have been talking to Skoda UK since last week as the dealer straight away said talk to the manufacturer. Head of customer service, Skoda UK has requested for couple of days to have a discussion

Is it coming from the same area of the engine bay as the water pump video ?

that i'll have to check as the noise is not always present. it comes and goes. Can it be normal? I did drive another Citigo with no noise however it had done 4K miles on the clock and mine is still at 150 miles.

Here is the video. Tis is driving me crazy. Dealer has booked me in for monday and said we'll have to starttaking the parts off as they dont know where the noise is coming from. Thats not fair for a brand new car or is it?

That is pretty annoying and I can see why you want rid of it.

Mine definitely doesn't do that.

Hope you get it sorted soon and keep us informed

Alternator bearing perhaps?.I agree very annoying for a brand new car.

It is mate and dealer said its normal and should go soon. I dont believe them. Now they want me to bring the car on monday and they will start opening the engine as they have no clue where its coming from. Since its just 3 days old car can i not reject the car?

I had booked one more citigo and octavia, not due for another few months. Feel like cancelling both of them.

So annoyed

I think you have to give them an opportunity to fix the car (even if it is brand new). I would contact Skoda UK directly and voice your concerrns?

I have already logged a case with sooda uk and a case manager should contact me in couple if days. Its just that i dont want the engine to be opened thus early buying the car. What worries me is that the dealer has no idea where the noise is coming from.

According to the dealer its normal however no other citigo he has seem to be whisling. And if he thinks its not normal then why is he ready to open the engine up.

All these these things worry me. I am totaly new to skoda.

This is what one of my mate thinks: any thoughts??

**Probably or waterpump, altinator, clutch baring something driven off the engine rather than the engine itself. Bedding in does not make sense as a reason as this is now more about not thrashing the engine until you are sure the seals are up to it. You are looking for fluid leaks when bedding in. If a bedding in engine is squeaking something is rubbing against something else and should be sorted now not left to rub for 1000 miles. That said I doubt it is internal to the engine based on the sound pitch so not super serious. Also Very Unlikely it could be a mount but try wobbling the engine when off and cold same with the exhaust.

That to me sounds like a squeaking pulley of some sort not a whistle. It's in that area 100%. You move away from it and it goes away.

Dealer did have a look on monday and said we cant locate the noice as they tried to take the belt and pullies out and they seem ok and they called skoda techbteam and they said we have never had any reports for such noise hence its a normal noise. What crap!! Now they have booked the car in for monday and as per them they will start taking the engine apart. So sad:(

I feel your frustration and anger, the wait until Monday is going to be hard to bear as well.I am certain its a bearing on the way out or in need of lubrication.

Do you reckon its anything serious? Should I let them go through the processor ask for a replacement as i bought 3 cars of them in 1 week?? Also when i opened the bonnet the engine was full of cobwebs thats looked ridiculous. Should i be bothered about it as the car was at the yard for few months. Just want monday to come now. I love driving the car...

Sounds like its related to the alterator/drive belt area to me as it changes as you rev the engine. Does it also do it under load?

Personally I wouldn't worry, let it get looked at on Monday and go out with one of the tech guys so you can point it out.

My octavia when left for a few days can have spider webs all over it just after a day, its been a good summer for spiders.

It probably hasn't been standing for that long.

As for rejection the car, I'd wait for the report, I honestly think it's not a major fault, albeit an annoying one.

Cheers mate...

I dont know about the load however it makes that squeak or whistle or cricket like noise when the engine has hit 90 deg and its at 1000 revs either on idling or picking up from a traffic light or when i change the gear and revs drop.

I will keep you posted.

Went to the dealers today as i couldnt be asked to wait until monday. They booked the car straight in as I involved the management in. Got a car to drive away and guess what.

Got a call after 30 mins updating me that the issue has been diagnosed already. Its the tension on the belt so it wasnt taking enough load and once you put the air con and lights on the noise increased. They are replacing the belt rather than adjusting the tension on the belt.

Does it making any sense guys??

Yes does make sense. On some cars the air con pump is driven on a separate belt. I have had these squeak before. Good on your dealer for replacing the belt as if loose it could have worn in the wrong places leading to premature failure. When replacing the belt they will re-tension the new one as part of the process.
