right i have decided to get one of these now :) but i hear the standard lenses is a bit crap very soft focus and stuff, so.....

whats a good starter lenses i dont really intend for using it for doing huge telephoto stuff but something with a good range but still not bad at macro stuff

i know i will be possibly asking alot with that and cheap lol as im only just starting to get into this.

also where is the best price these days on the body and lenses

THe lens is not great, but some of the best pics I've taken have been on the "stock" lens. just take your time or a tripod ;) The oter ring turning on focus is my greatest bug bear, as it turns my cokin holder and is not that resistant to turning when on motor, hence holding, while focusing, while composing...

In answer to your question, in order of preference, I'd go for lenes funds permitting as Cannon, Sigma/Tamra.

If your not concerned about carrying many lens then anything

My second most used lens is a 28-200 sigma...if buying again, I'd get that lens with USM and IS.

And finally I have a 135-400 sigma lens for m-sport/elusive sea eagles on mull grrr, but it's too slow really and at f5.6 AF struggles on occasion, again if doing again I'd go for a L glass 100-200 f2.8 and tele, but thats serious money over an ok lens.

Hope that helps, finally, www.warehouseexpress.com does ok for my book.

In which case the stock lens should cover you for 6 months.

Consider a cannon lens upto 300 ish, as by time you have multipled the focal length (no idea how much you know) you will end up with a 450 lens, which is ample.

USM = Ultra Sonic Motors - speedy focus, pretty much a given on most lenses now.

IS = Drank too much wine, yet still take a good shot as it sense your movement and stabilizes the image.

Set a budget then go surfing, if possible get both togehter price matched.

The stock lens is worth keeping for those days out when you don't really want to kart 4 kg's of glass with you.

That assumes the stock lens on the 350 is very similar to the 300D.

That said there was a place on ebay I found, seling stuff well below uk best prices and paying the import duty...not convinced myself about paying out 500 quid on a lens and leaving a courier to deliver it, I'd rather collect it if you follow ;)

its not as good apparently, well it is better in some worse in others

i need that IS as i seem to have Parkinson

colin im of to NY in dec so maybe get things bit cheaper then ?

yes and no, IIRC bodies are covered warranty where you bu them and lenses carry a worldwide warranty...or the other way around.

RE learning, best bet is to get it or borrow something and either buy a book or search the web.

Photography is really interesting. changeing just a few settings can transform an image, if you have a good eye or are willing to look at things in different ways, then the camera will not hold you back.

Get the camera, experiment, you will soon know what you want and it's at max 10 extra carriage to order the lens the following week.

If your going to only snap at a distance, then the stock lens is no use, if you going to stand in forests and do landscapes then it's fine.

Yep...plan towards a good long focal lens then, that will cover you for rally, even birds , and low light gig's...although you may not want to carry 2k's worth of camera gear into a gig.

IS would be a must if you come down the tier, eg cannon mid spec lens' so not the white ones, IS gives you about a f stop or so the pundits reckon.

Off to New Work, then pay a visit to B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home

I got the stock lens with my 350D, yes its a bit soft at times but it isnt bad for a knock-about lens, and its pretty wide. I also have now the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and it is a cracking lens. Try one out, you will be suprised. f2.8 is great in low-light conditions where you dont have or want to use a flash, or for serious depth of field stuff.

If you want longer, I personally like the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. A bit on the heavy side, but damned good value for money against the Canon L series. That is my next lens to get, followed by a Tokina 17 (ish)-25 (ish) again f2.8

I now have te eos 350d with the standard 18-55 lens and a sigma 70-300 APO macro lens. I find the standard lens is pretty much fine for most things. To be honest as a starter, you will not really notice the difference. I am sticking with this for a bit longer as I too am only just starting out in the dslr side of things. The 70-300 sigma is a cracking lens. I am so pleased I bought it. The picture quality is superb and it is pretty quick and quiet too. It also has a macro facility between 200-300 which is great. I also have a 2x tele convertor for those occasional mega zoom moments, but it means you have to focus manually.

I'm on the verge of buying a 350D, but have put it off for now. Good thread though this, I've picked up some good info

Best online UK price I could find was at www.7dayshop.com -

18-55 lens is fine. if you want a better lens then buy the sigma 18-50 f2.8 but that costs close to

just been for a play with the 350 and a d70 and i liked the cannon more than the nikon especially for 300ish less

get from jessops as the 7dayshop item is an rebel XT imported not a UK camera

I was meaning more to use the 7dayshop price at Jessops for a pricematch :)

Steve

If you want to see what this camera can do, take a look at this guy's photoblog - http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/ . He's obviously got a lot of talent, but the camera comes off well, too!

Phil

Have you asked Jessops to price match 7dayshop as you may well find they wont as they arent UK based...

I haven't yet, didn't have time today. eBuyer's my backup,

I got Jessops to price match warehouse express the day of launch for the 350d, paid

Well I'll see how it goes and update the thread accordingly, hopefully tomorrow

I also know someone who works in the local Jessops branch, so that should help too :)

Steve

I recently bought a 350d, would highly recommend it. Im also looking for a lens!
