Which sat nav?

Featured Replies

As the title says, I,m thinking of getting some sort of sat nav for the car.

Am I right in thinking that TomTom Go is the system of choice?

I am not interested in multi-fuction stuff such as PDA, not ulness its better and cheaper. It must also be compact, with minimal wiring or fixing.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Check out the navman icn 510. I looked into it all, and the tom tom wont fit in your pocket. I bought the navman, and am very pleased with it.

I use a Garmin PDA (3600? Can't remember the number) and it is utterly brilliant. Worth a look.

Have used Tom Tom at work very good, can set up in a matter of minites. The only thing to watch out for is it sometimes takes you through the town centre as opposed to round a bypass. The major problerm I have found you can't program what size vehicle you are driveing,Ie LGV's don't go through 6"6' posts!!

I'm using TomTom too, but on a PDA. It's pretty good, especially the new facility to navigate to a specific post code. Only minor complaint I have is that the UK roads map doesn't appear to be as up to date as I thought it would be. Stretches of the new A1 and M77 roads are missing for example. But the upgrade CD I received contains two UK maps. I can't load the bigger one as I don't have enough storage yet. Perhaps that map will be more accurate.

We've ordered a couple of TomTom GO 500 units at work which are due to arrive in a week or so. If you haven't made up your mind by then, then I'll take a couple of pics and let you know what they're like.

I also have a PDA - Palm Tungsten T5. TomTom 3 is good. I have TomTom 5 but cannot install it due to some 'conduit error'. How did you fare?

You need to install the latest version of the palm desktop, Mike. Palm provides - somewhere hidden on their website - a tool to 'clean' your PC of the old palm desktop settings... Otherwise, if you remove the old version and just install the new one, it uses your old settings.

The key seems to be to remove old palm software, use the tool to remove all settings, then install the latest one - to a directory name with no spaces (c:\palm) and then try it.

Had the same problem myself until I got a clean install of the palm desktop... TT5 is pretty cool. My problem is I lent it to my brother and it came back with a broken wire on the connecting plug on the GPS unit... going to have to find a soldering iron :(

Anyway. Consider this another vote for tomtom... :)

Thanks for the advice. According to their website, there is no Palm Desktop update for the T5:

http://euro.palmone.com/europe/en/support/downloads.html#TungstenT5).

I have version 4.1.4 (Hotsync 6.0.1). Most of the other PDAs have version 4.1 as a download. I have installed it in c:\Program Files\palmOne, so maybe that is the problem. I couldn't find the 'clean' tool, so I may have to hack the registry following:

http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=75,E=0000000000102485002,K=2498,Sxi=8,Case=obj(1844)

TomTom support is hopeless. I had to find out from a Palm forum how to install the maps for TomTom3.

Does anyone know if I can use TomTom mobile with a different GPS receiver? or does it have to be a TomTom one??

Just bought a TomTom Go 700 and very impressed so far. The only down side is that it won't import the contact list from my Nokia 6230 - but I should have known that from checking phone compatibility on TomTom's site. That said, it recognised my phone immediately Bluetooth was selected and is excellent as a hands free phone installation.

Mike - I found that reinstalling the desktop software without cleaning out the old settings didn't give me a choice of installation directory.

I'm sure I read somewhere on Pocket GPS World that you get the conduit error when there's a space in the folder names, as the tomtom software can't handle it (useful, eh?).

I didn't know about the reg cleaner, so just installed version 4.1 onto the laptop and it worked fine. With hindsight, I should have picked the advance install option to place the files onto my hard drive, and copied the lot across with my card reader (copying a massive map file via hotsync is asking for failure!).

Try searching pocket gps world - they're good at posting workarounds, as the conduit error is quite widespread...

Mate just got one of these bluemedia "navigon" (sp?) sat nav things and it looks quite cool - especially for

I have spent ages searching, but can only find work-arounds for TTN3 - not TTN5. Maybe I can hack them around a bit and get a solution. I note the very high disatisfaction rate with TomTom support on that forum.

Sorry Mike, I'm using TomTom on Pocket PC, but I see Stimps has come up with a useful tip!

Have the original TTG myself and think it's great, especially with the new S/W and full post code search facility. Would like to upgrade to the 500 version with Bluetooth Car Kit and Traffic Reports.

How does the TT GO 500 work with the phone bluetooth wise, ie does it have a seperate speaker and mike?

have a look at www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk they do a wide variety, have reviews (usually "extensive") and are very helpful. I've dealt with them a few times and they have always been very good. Not always the cheapest but it'll give you an idea of what is out there

How about something like this?

Want to demo it to me? ;)

I am using an Ipaq PDA with Tom Tom Navigator on. I have had a Parrot 3300 handsfree kit fitted (the Ipaq includes a phone) with its own GPS receiver and it works with Tom Tom fine. Took a bit of setting up - had to tell Tom Tom that it was a wired serial receiver even though it is Bluetooth - but I think that was an issue with the Ipaq.

3600 it is.

I also have one. Very good indeed. Main benefits are the built in GPS system, no trailing wires or bluetooth, and the in car mount which just sits firmly on the top of the dash when in use and hides in the glove locker when not.

Check for map coverage, Tom Tom is not as good in Europe as Garmin. I needed the Czech Republic, not available from Tom Tom, excellent coverage from Garmin.

I've used Tom Tom 5 on the Palm in France, and found it excellent.

It even got me around the Rouen ring road first time, and I've never managed that without getting hopelessly lost before!

It also alerts you to tolls, so you can decide to avoid them -very useful en France!
