How long should pads last??

Featured Replies

how long should brake pads last on 1.9 tdi.

i know its a question of how long is a piece of string, but is 25k about right.

25 - 35k is the norm, but it depends on how you drive. Hard and sharp braking will wear them out quicker than soft and gentle.

ive only noticed the spongyness since i put a dragon box in. as you say harder braking. what would you recomend as a replacement.

cheers

Apparently pads sometimes stick on and rub away very quickly, or so my skoda dealer tells me!

FX:Looks at octy TDI with original pads at 56k miles

:)

My first pads lasted 40,500 miles...a lot of downshifting when breaking helps...

does that harm the engine at all???

Engine braking is good. I put DS2500 brake pads on my front calipers at about 30,000 miles - Engine, etc done at 64,000 miles and this is how much meat is STILL on them.:cool:

dont get ya, what do you mean??

would the DS2500 fit a tdi

Of course not. It's a braking technique. To pass a driving test you should know how to downshift.

im not very enigney minded. oh, and my father in law took me for my test!!!

maybe i ought to go again.

In this country, to pass a driving test you should not use "intermediate gears" when slowing down. Brake pads are cheaper than engines and gearboxes, and downshifting can unsettle a car somewhat. I use the brakes to slow, and gears to go.

On the track things are a little different though ;)

These pads will fit if you have the 256mm brakes. ;) And they're spare now too. :D

As long as you don't engage from 3rd to 2nd and you hit 6,200rpm doin' so is it a good thing to do. In the case of emergency braking, if you're quick enough, down shifting will definitely help you prevent skidding.

One thing I noticed with my Fabia TDI was that it really lacked engine braking compared to other cars I've driven, and would just carry on rather than slowing down! Must be down to all that torque

Chris

Had my vrs serviced at 17k and the dealer reported that I had only used apx 10-15% of the pads on front...which was nice:)

Plenty of meat still on my front pads at 8500 miles but a session at Knockhill trying to keep up with these feckin paraffin burning Furbies :D:D did them no good - slowing a vRS Octavia down from 105 mph for Duffus Dip takes a lot of braking

Had Pagid fast road pads fitted to the front yesterday at Star Performance along with Millers racing brake fluid. Although I'm still bedding them in, the pedal feel is a lot better. About

Is that more commonly known as Pagid FR? (obvious Q eh? :D)

let me know how you get on too please as I've just fitted those pads to what is effectively the same braking system too.

Still bedding the pads in but they feel far better than standard. About

Pagid are also on our promotions page ;)

How do you find the DS2500 for dust when compared with OEM pads?

I had DS3000's on the Scoob and they ruined the paint on the alloys.

Cheers

Lee

DS2500s generate a lot of very black dust, but they do stop the car well. DS3000s are even worse, allegedly.

@Tom - yes I know the Police teach gears to go brakes for slow, but I'm afraid I can't agree about engine braking unsettling the car - if that were the case, Michael Schumacher would never downshift, other than 6 gears at a time.

Pagid Blues sound interesting if they're that cheap, that said my DS2500s have done in excess of 30000 miles now and are, according to Fish Bros yesterday, 30% worn. (no doubt Jon will be along in a minute to say I drive like a granny :D ).

@Matchmaker, are yours the Blues?

@Jason - look at the state of those calipers!

(no doubt Jon will be along in a minute to say I drive like a granny :D ).

Just to keep you happy Nick, you drive like a granny :haha:

DS2500s are dusty, DS3000 are even more dusty and contain a lot of metal, so you sometimes end with metal filings welded to your bodywork :( They also weld to your wheels as Lee found out - and that's why mine were refurbed anthracite :D

As to how long they last - depends on how and where you drive the car.

2500s used to last me about 25k miles before they were down to the last 1mm. Used to get twice that out of rears.

Assuming you don't do much track work (I did) they should last about 40-50k, but everyone is different.
