help to choose engine

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody,

Want to place an order for a new yeti 4x4 but cannot decide whatsoever

between 1.8TSI and 2.0 TDI 140HP.  I do 50/50 city/highway but not that many miles overall

so some dealers advice petrol some diesel and I don't know what to do anymore :(

any help?

I've had both and both are an excellent drive-with the diesel I did too many 2 mile journeys and it would light up the dpf warning necessitataing  a 15 minute open road run to clear it every so often but averaged @40mpg. The 1.8 is brisker and feels more frisky-lighter nad more responsive but is below 25mpg over the same sort of usage -now at 3000 miles. You can do the sums and work out what sort of period of time it would take to balance the higher price of the Tdi with less expense on fuel. It would take a number of years for the diesel to repay the extra purchase price. If the extra performance of the petrol is of interest It has a value too.

If you are city based I'd recommend the petrol.

those sound like real world fuel consumption figs to me

gulp!

thanks! so even in city driving still quite big difference with diesel...

Yes but since diesel is pricier what you need to consider is fuel cost per year-if you do 8k per annum 320 gallons petrol//200 gallons diesel, allow for the diesel/petrol difference 200 diesel costs about the same as 210 gals petrol.Difference is therefore the cost of 110 gallons of petrol so assuming current average petrol price the diesel would save £680 per annum.

price difference between diesel yeti and same spec petrol will pay that excess runnning cost over how many years? Price of diesel about £1500 more so about 3 years to break even . So in year 4 and thereafter you may save money

I'm lucky-I'm only less than 2 miles from a dual carriage way where I could burn off the excess soot from the DPF when the light comes on and usually could take the necessary 25 mins to cover a stretch of road at 50+ mph and return home. If you can't then you may get into paying a garage to force a regeneration or risk the car going into limp home mode which may occur if you are unable to clear the dpf by an open road run.

What I do miss is the fact the diesel gives a longer range-ie needs less frequent filling up and on a long journey 300 plus miles then there is a time saving.

Was in the same boat and decided on the 1.8 tsi. Fantastic engine and most of them make between 170 and 180bhp rather than the advertised 160.

On longer trips I get well over 40mpg.

I've not managed over 40 on a long trip-St Alban to manchester and back largely within motorway speed (not limit but keeping up with real speeds) got me 36point something. If you can ignore the genuinely terrific driving potential of the 1.8 I accept you may get more than 40. I can't!!

I do stick to the limit, maybe that makes the difference?

if I can manage to get ~40mpg in the city it's good enough for me to get a diesel because the price between TDI140 and TSI180 is not that big plus

I lease a car so it's spread across 2-3 years period but the price saved on fuel is instant.

to clean up DPF 25 min drive is needed? quest a long, costs some fuel too.

Depending on how long you intend keeping your yeti the level of depreciation between the different engines may play a part too, so don't forget that. It may be different with the yeti but depreciation on a petrol Octavia far outweighs the initial extra cost in purchase price of the diesel equivelent so this may be worth investigation and consideration before you choose. Good luck.

25 mins is the time it takes to get to a road where I can cruise for 15 mins without stop start conditions and get home. If you are London based as I was until 2006 then you may find it more difficult!

If you compare monthly payments (as with HP lease or PCP) and add fuel costs which may be weekly or every 10 days the amount out of your account monthly is the test. I ran a diesel 140 for 18k miles and now run a 1.8 petrol. You notice the cash spend at the fuel station as if it matters more but the bank statement reminds you of the monthly payments.

I must be thick but I own a Yeti and follow the forum and try to make sense of SUK stuff on the Net

but I still can't get me head around the FL engine versions available.

I want DSG and preferably a more potent motor than the 140 diesel I currently have. I'm not into chipping

and want a stock motor, preferably petrol but not 1.2. Fuel consumption or DPF regeneration is not a consideration.

Is there anything bigger than a 1.2 DSG petrol in any FL Yeti version? 170 DSG diesel would be okay but is that

only in the L&K which I think is over priced?

No. 170 dsg is available in elegance but not L&K. Retarded isn't it? :(

You can only have 1.8 TSI in a manual and only in L&K trim.

I don't think the l&k is overpriced at all, I never had any intentions of getting one til I was about to buy a cr170 elegance with a few options and it worked out better to just get the l&k

Thanks. 1.8 TSI with DSG sounds very nice. Do VW/Audi do that with an SUV and is that with the more desirable 7 speed DSG?

diesel personally, residuals will be higher, easier to sell also. From a driving point of view Petrol is good if thrashed, diesel fits all areas from b roads to motorway   don't worry about mpg as every car will use fuel this is a given

Interesting. Maybe I need to look at the L&K in a bit more detail.

Think I'll wait till the New Year when things have hopefully settled down and Configurators will work

properly, brochures will be available and even demo models may be in the showrooms.

why you did only 18k with diesel?

Yeti one. bought a demonstrator-great car and not patient enough to wait for one to be built. 140 elegance It wasn't my choice of car -no panoramic roof, heated screen or DAB and not my first choice of colour. At that time was annually doing a 2500 mile European holiday and it did that superbly. in ordinary non holiday driving it did put up dpf light half a dozen times. The L&K came out and having a yeti made it easy to wait for one-in first choice of colour with all the bits I would always have had if I'd chosen and not hurried.. change of lifestyle (re-marriage) means no very long trips and probable reduction in annual mileage. Excellent trade in value made change easy but petrol became more sensible and extra performance helps fulfil the very enjoyable promise of the chassis.

170 DSG is not on the configurator at all currently, either Elegance or L&K. I've queried this with SUK, but the response so far is just 'I have informed the ŠKODA IT Department who are investigating this issue'.

Per VAG policy you will need to upgrade to a more premium brand eg VW Tiguan 2.0 TSi DSG Match or RLine @ £26K and up... ;)

May well do that early in the New Year. My Wife still hates the look of the Yeti and the Tiguan is a nice

looking motor. A lot more expensive for the same overall spec but worth a look to get a better petrol

engine and DSG combination. 2 litre TSi with DSG beats anything Skoda has to offer.

Mmmmm....not so sure about that.

I too looked at the Tiguan before ordering a new FL Yeti, having owned the current Yeti before, but that was before the FL was announced. The Tiguan is too bland IMO. Yes, it is very nice inside (especially the R-Line), but it is getting a bit dated now, and I understand that VW have a new one in the pipeline, so beware!

My wife did not like the look of my old Yeti neither, so probably won't like the new one, but ......my car not her's!

I do agree however agree about the Yeti choice of engines, and like you, would have liked the 2.0 FSI with DSG (not fussed about 4x4), but I think that the 1.2TSI DSG I have chosen will be adequate for my needs, as my days of a boy racer are (unfortunately) a distant memory. Having said that, when sat at the salesman's desk ordering the Yeti, and staring at the poster of the new Octavia VRS estate behind him, I was very temped to change my mind.

OK, so I have ordered new yeti with TDI 110HP and have a week or so to change the engine if I want.

That';s why I have a question for you again - TDI 110HP or TDI 140HP?   no that big difference in price

but how about the economy and power these two? is it worthy?

Which do you want - power or economy?
