Skoda Superb II 2012, slow navi and other questions

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new here, and have som questions.

My Superb is just over a year old, and have drivin it for about 60.000km now.

Overall I think it's a quite nice car, but the quality standards do not really reach up to my last car, BMW E61.

Columbus Navi.

So slow on startup, that I can live with, but the navigation is so slow that it hurts. When I type the City and streetname in, I have to wait at least a second between every letter, is that normal? Also, the automatic zoom of the map lags, no smoothness at all! I consider to let my old but fast Garmin Nuvi into the car again, feels cheap when i actually paid alot of mony to get a top notch navi and soundsystem. Also, the voice recognision doesn't work in the swedish language, a detail that was essential for me when I chose Columbus. The microphone is also useless, am I driving in highwayspeed, no one can hear what i say, tested with several different phones, and Skoda has changed the microphone twice?

Here is a Video that shows how slow the Navi is, and some pictures from the "top secret" menu. ;)

Mirrors.

From what I understand, I have to hold in the lock button on my key for a couple of seconds everytime i leave the car to get the mirrors to fold in, completely useless when I have keyless, i chose keyless so i didn't have to pick up the keys from my pocket all the time. Or have I missed something here? In the offer it says "Automaticly foldable sidemirrors", doesn't seem so automaticly to me?

Wheels.

Laurel 7,5Jx17, something wrong on the manufacturing, from poland it says, no wonder they were crooked after 15.000km, anyone else who had some problems with theese type of wheels? I drive 60-80.000km every year for the past ten years, and have never experienced anything like it before?

I apologize for my spelling and grammar, I'm from Sweden and didn't exactly score an A+ in englishclass back in the days. ;)

Thanx in advance!

Your English is a lot better than my Swedish! Regarding the Columbus speed it looks a little slower than it should be to me. Have you considered a firmware upgrade? Do you know what the current firmware is? Try pressing and holding the setup button for 20 seconds to reveal a hidden menu. If that is not activated it should written on the head unit, or a vcds scan will tell you.

Regards

Adam

Edit: scratch that, just saw your second link. It is quite a new firmware although I have read that people have had problems with 4120. Was it 4120 at purchase, or have you upgraded?

Hi and welcome!

Columbus;

Looks to me it's going as fast as it can to me. I upgraded from 2724 to 4120 recentely, and I didn't really notice any speed changes. You have to remember the navigation works with the process of elimination, so if you want to navigate to PRAGUE, and you hit the P, it has to remove all the destinations that don't start with a P from the list of propables. This takes alot of computing effort. When you've hit PRAG, it's going to speed up slightly because there are fewer possible outcomes.

Another point is I remember reading that the RNS510 (= Columbus) is designed to function this way, for safety reasons. If the unit was very smooth and fast, people would enter an adress on the fly while staring at the screen. So imagine a driver enter "Spårvagnsaktiebolagsskensmutsskjutarefackföreningspersonalbeklädnadsmagasinsförrådsförvaltarens" . I find if you enter an adress stationary, it's quite slow. But when you are moving, it's easy to glance at the road, glance at the screen, tap the letter, glance back at the road while it computes, glance at the screen again, etc.

A possible solution for you might me resetting the columbus, pressing the < + > + top right button for some time. Another option is restoring it to default settings, or re-loading the maps to see if it makes a difference.

Mirrors;

Alas my friend, you've bought a poorly Skoda, the red-headed stepchild nobody likes in the VAG family...there's a big thread about the folding mirrors HERE Even us poor critters without KESSY have to continue holding the LOCK-button in order to fold them. Folding and unfolding the mirrors when you lock/unlock the car, is Audi-territory....and I've never read anyting about someone retro-fitting a module to make that work...not saying it can't be done though, however an Audi central locking module-swap in combination with KESSY sounds a bit...incompatible :)

Wheels;

Can't help you with that, maybe see if you can get replacements from the dealer after you make a complaint?

I have the same firmware and mine behaves in exactly the same way. I just thought it was a rubbish processer or sloppy coding. I'm interested to hear it's not normal. I have upgraded to v9 maps, maybe I'll get around to v10 maps and firmware upgrade this winter.

I have a TomTom cradle mount on the drivers central air vent. HD traffic is far superior than the Columbus TMC, but interestingly the Columbus' rerouting is faster. Navs are always about traffic info rather than route planning for me. Now Google Maps (and Apple Maps) are providing the same TomTom HD traffic informatiom for smartphones for free*, I'm ditching the TomTom mount for an iPhone cradle.

Thanks for the answers, it seems that I'm not alone. :)

My friends dad have bolero nav in his Superb, and according to him, the navigation menu is far more faster then mine, how is that even possible when it is that much cheeper?

Some other things that is so innoying, when my phone connects to the system,it's always starts play mp3's from my phone, and it takes about one minute before I can switch over to radio again, only way to go around that problem is to disable media sounds in the bluetooth settings in my phone. Anyone else who has this problem?

The Columbus is certainly not a quick performer, but once set I can’t fault it.

The mirrors can be folded by the adjustment knob on the door panel.

It is possible to have them fold automatically but it requires adding a relay and a wiring loom to each door mirror and controller, not a 5 min job, but it’s something I retro-fitted to SWMBO’s TT (not all Audi’s fold automatically either)

Excellent to learn I am not alone with a painfuuly slow Columbus. When raised with Skoda Customer Service Management received no sensible or useful comment. Usual Motor Industry denial mode or they do not read this Forum.

In contrast my portable Becker is magic. Intuitive, fast, accurate, ie no "off Road" statements when on Euro motorway or city. The waypoint system works a treat to avoid major road works, i.e Germany. Leaves Columbus for dead. Suggest the naming of this unit is "Ironic". A Christopher Coumubus it is not..

You can switch off the default to mp3s from your phone through setup on the headunit:

Setup -> Media -> Bluetooth autoplay
