I'd just leave it be. It'll run until the end of time anyway :)

  • I've got a 58 plate Mk2, and I assume the headlights hadn't changed from 2006   If people can't see with the standard lights they must be driving faster than they should be as mine are absolutely fi

  • The topic is about improving the headlights, for which one option is a HID kit.   You took it off topic by mentioning the word 'legal'.

  • Blown me balls and bought uprated bulbs from halfrauds.Gonna wack em in tonite and hopefully my street will be like blackpool illuminations lol ;-)

and of course you are missing the central block of text in the middle of page two which clearly states the vehicle must have headlight cleaning and self leveling (headlamp or suspension). Both of which are not equipped on Octavia's without hid's (although SOME have got washers)

Its fine to inspect the document and pick it apart but do it properly

I know that's everyone's reasoning for using the term, strange that these people who claim to have been defrauded weren't intelligent enough to see that before they went through the door

Its because thats all there is in York, jesus lighten up a bit ;)

Hopefully this will solve your problem,im guessing you know how easily the headlamps come out so you can change the bulbs?

Erm no mate, just put the bulbs in the bak with the lights in situe ????

no, you take the lights out to change the bulbs

Bet that was fun!  you just undo a plastic nut, move a lever & pull the headlight out, piece of p*ss to do.

Are your lights better with the new bulbs??

I don't think a decision by a magistrate is sufficient to set precedent.   They are only lay people after all.

It can only be done by a proper high court judge, ie people in funny wigs.  But maybe they don't all wear them nowadays?

Some one will correct me if I'm wrong.  (because I ought to know how the judicial system works).

Well,.....I'm completely baffled by all of the above jargon, so can I ask a simple question please....my 2008 Octavia Estate (with washers) has reasonably good main beams, but there is a fairly dim patch at the centre of the main beam area, in the distance. If I get HID or halogen bulbs, will I not only have brighter lights (yay!), but will they eliminate this dimness (where I really expect to see the brightest illumination)? Many thanks guys!

You dont have self leveling suspension or headlights so according to regs you shouldnt have them.

First thing i'd do is make sure they are lined up correctly, this can cause lots of issues.

Correct, sort of

A magistrates' court decision is not binding on another, nor is a decision in the Crown Court, it would have to go to a higher court to have any binding authority

I don't normally get sucked into hid wars but this statement is not correct

"""They are talking here of putting aftermarket kits in STANDARD reflector headlights which are DESIGNED for halogen bulbs. The Octavia already has PROJECTOR lights which are originally DESIGNED for HID use, they are the same headlight unit in factory spec xenons. The cost of the xenons comes from the electronics, self levelling etc, but the physical headlight projector is one and the same for halogen and factory xenon. It also states that the beam pattern won't be correct -- if that is so, how come the beam pattern is perfectly fine when tested at MOT?""""

The physical projectors for HID and halogen are different, the rear bowls on HID projectors are wider and give a much brighter light output. The front size can be the same (3" or 2.5") but they have a different focal point which is why genuine hid projectors give a brighter light with no hot spots in the beam pattern.

I started with the std halogen projectors and put hids in them, they are very good. I then replaced the std projectors will Hella hid projectors and they are much brighter. (Hella make the std headlights on the octavia also)

The HID kits are mainly for the dipped headlights.

If it is main beam you have an issue with then there isn't an awful lot you can do except to try some brighter bulbs.

As this thread suggests HID kits are perfectly legal without headlight washers or the levelling system so if you wanted to improve your dipped headlights then HID's would be a good cost effective solution.

And for those who have read the thread it also suggests (with proof) that they are not

There is no definitive "proof" either way, only opinion. They may be legal, they may be illegal. The end.

I'm throwing in the towel with this one. I think the OP has found a solution to his problem!

As I see it whilst there is no firm evidence to support the fact some people maintain that they are illegal there is also no evidence to suggest that they aren't either.

As long as this is the case the legalities of HID's will continue to cause a difference of opinion, a case of going around in cirlcles if you like.

I am confident that I have taken sensible precautions fitting my HID kit to ensure that they do not dazzle, which in the grand scheme of things is the purpose of regulating their usage.

I'll see you all in the next HID thread! :giggle:

Surely someone can shed some light on the issue?

Like all the vans and 4x4's which seem to cause me most incontinence.

I think you may need to see a doctor then.
