Urban to Adventure

I should also say thay the main dealer i bought my urban from recommended amd to me! They have used them for demonstrators and they cant tell anything has been changed when they plug it into their service / fault computer.

they said it was the same as the 170 so insured it as that!

Some advise. By insuring your 2wd 110 Urban Urban as a completely different model (170hp Yeti, 4x4 model?), you have deliberately misinformed the insurance company, which makes your policy null and void (30 years insurance industry experience BTW).

The VIN number and registration number will show on the DVLA database as a 110 Urban, and as insurance companies (usually) will do a routine database check in the event of a claim, you will be found out right away. Any claim will be void, which could mean you being liable for the 3rd party's damage as well as your own. And, heaven forbid if you injure/kill someone what that could cost you.

Also if you get stopped by a car savvy policeman, he may well know that the distinctive look of an Urban (black wheel arches)  is not a 170 Yeti, and could in theory seize the car, for not having valid insurance.

Finally, and has already been commented on, the smaller Urban brakes are "not fit for purpose" on a 170hp Yeti. Whist you state that you will only ever need to stop from 70mph, that is somewhat missing the point. Also, the insurance company could/will argue that the brakes are not commensurate with the the uprated power.

You are on very tricky ground here, and for what......just to save a few quid on the correct insurance?

Sorry to be harsh but I suggest on your new car you do things by the book and insure correctly.

Truthseeker, I haven't misinformed the insurance co, I have taken their advice. It is correctly insured as an Urban as it should be, they said they would note the increase in power and then charged me the same premium as a 170 4x4. As I had it done from new I don't know if this was very much more cost than the standard one would have been, but it's just over £300 per year so I thought this was very competitive!

That's fine then. Just hope you have the correct endorsement attached to your policy to confirm.

Still can't understand though why they would charge charge you the same premium as a 170 when the brakes are from a 110.

They have the premium for a more expensive vehicle and the risk is primarily weighted by the driver -age and record- the accident risk is extremely similar and repair costs the same or lower-they have a more profitable deal.Insurers operate on a basis that makes sense to them-in logic bigger brakes would give a safety benefit but they don't care-it is risk they calculate. Insanely some would regard upgrading the brakes as needing a higher premium and some wouldn't cover winter tyres until they wised up.

Seems like vaguely sensible approach, instead pulling it out of their arses like normal.

Now you have got me thinking, I will shop around for the Adventure insurance, as you said I may be paying a bit too much, a 170 4x4 does cost quite a bit more than my Urban!

Thank JCP. Have been out of the business for almost 15 years now so maybe things are different now.

I've had my urban for 18 months now and have done 38000 in her! Since I joined a search and rescue dog team earlier in the year, the 2wd has got me almost stuck in a couple of situations. So it was time for an upgrade to a 4x4, so popped into the dealer yesterday and am now collecting my shiny new adventure next week!! I added the wheel arch extensions so it will look just like my urban which I just love!

I had the 110 remapped up to 176 bhp and this has given me an average mpg of 54, so think i will do the same on the Adventrue as it has 4 wheels to drive rather than 2!

Can't wait!!

Did you havw any problems with the roof strips splitting or cracking on your Urban?  I've had to have two replaced already because of this and now the other have gone the same way.
