Disable sidelights?

Featured Replies

While cleaning the car at the weekend I noticed that my vRS has sidelights as well as DRL, as shown here...

The sidelights seem a bit surplus to requirements and the colour of them looks a bit odd against the LEDs.

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable them in VCDS or similar?

TIA!

PS Still not worked out how to get to the indicator bulb to switch it for a silver one! :(

Take the bumper off then remove the headlight, simples.

Are side lights a requirement of the MOT? I would double check that before disabling them.

Sidelights are required for MOT, when you switch the headlights from 0 to position 1 then the DRL's go out and the sidelights come on instead.

Not the vRS they don't, the DRLs dim when switched to sidelights.

Sidelights ? I have Xenons as well and the only lights I see on mine (and in your pic) are the LED stripe DRL (which dim to serve as sidelight), the ugly orange indicator and the bi-xenon lens.

Are you talking about these decorative reflectors hiding the location of the missing halogen DRL that would be there if it was a halogen light cluster ?

PS: had a look at my indicator bulb to change it as well, looks like it's "mission : impossible" !  And the manual carefully avoided to write a line about it....

No they have normal sidelight bulbs too, on the pic in the OPs post you can see the orange glow to the left (nearest the grille) of the headlight, underneath the reflector you mention. Go look at yours and you'll see it its barely noticeable though. .

Yeah i think the regs say they can either Dim or be turned off when the main lights are on. The question is does dimmed DRLs count as sidelights. If they do then you should be fine but if they don't you would still need normal side lights to count come MOT time.

The mkII vRS just had the dimmed LEDs, it did have normal sidelight bulbs but they didn't do anything.

Well that's how it's done.

Makes me think that Paul has been reading the "Cheap Supermarket Air" thread, and was expecting a wind-up :giggle:

I Apologies mate, You're right : I never noticed that slight glow illuminating the vertical stripes inside the headlights, it comes from a blue tinted W5W bulb pretending to be white :-) so I quickly replaced it with a real xenon white canbus LED bulb and it looks much better now.

Thanks again for "enlightening" me ;-)

By the way :changed also the interior lights with non canbus white LED bulbs... easy, looks great, no errors, happy me :-)

Which bulbs did you use? Easy to change?

The change is very easy : pull out the bulb support, pull the bulb to take it off, plug the new one, put back the support.

I bought these led bulbs at ledperf.com few months ago.

They are w5w / T10 canbus error free with 5 smd led spots shining 360º.

Interior lights doesn't need to be canbus.

I was gonna suggest the above to replace the cack halogen bulb. Did it on my golf as it had the xenons, looked much better.

Anyone have a write up on how to do that? My car has xenon's and is due to arrive would like to replace it so it doesn't look out of place.

What led can I get to replace the sidelights? Bold sport link would be good if anyone knows :)
