SSDs - time for a new one

Featured Replies

I think my 5 year old (?) Kingston v2 128GB SSD is starting to die on me.  For the last few days I have been getting "Bad Image" messages from Windows when various applications try and start.  Initially it was InDesign and now ESET GUI failed.

I am running an oldish Dell Pentium D with a 750GB disk for data, but the SSD makes it nice and nippy (well enough for me) with 6GB and Windows 8.1 (care of work), so therefore not really looking to change my computer, but a replacement boot device.  I keep all my data, etc on a traditional hard drive, so just looking for something to use to boot windows from and have my apps installed on, so don't need anything larger that 128GB (currently got ~80GB free).

Therefore what comes recommended / or what should I avoid?

Thanks,

Matt

Tempted to add one to my system for the OS etc but never had to transfer the OS before and not sure about how easy Win 8.1 would be to transfer.

Personally I always opt for a reinstall.  I guess if you didn't want to take that approach, you would need to partition the SDD and make it bootable (start the win 8.1 installation process) and then boot into the recovery console and robocopy everything from the mechanical disk to your SSD - or see what free tools are out there which will do the transfer for you.

I'm looking for one too. Be interested to see how you get on.

I was skimming though UKHotdeals yesterday there were  4 or 5 SSD deals. I don't think there were any between 128Gb and 1Tb. It's either the very big or very small that seem to pop up.

Went for a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB from Amazon in the end....

Yes that is what I went for. But Amazon Black Friday deal did a 240Gb Crucial at £96 so the 120Gb is for my wife's PC  :giggle:

Beat me to it.

I've an OCZ drive. No point in worrying about the warranty on that any more.

They don't do the capacities I want. Already got a 256Gb one & that's nearly full, along with a normal 2Tb HDD, starting to use a 3rd 3TB normal HDD drive as well.

I need at least a 1Tb SSD for my main PC & another for my laptop, but unfortunately I don't have £700 floating about at the moment.

I understand now! I just use the SSD to boot Windows then use the internal sata ones for data and programmes, my storage is on 5 terrabytes of external drives.

Speed isn't that important so long as Photoshop and Lightroom work well.

:-)

Surely one of the other big memory / tech companies will pick up the pieces of OCZ?
