Guide for fitting new turbo?

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm soon to be fitting my hybrid turbo and wanting to digest as much info as possible prior to fitting it to save time on the day! There'll be nothing worse than coming to fitting it, being half way in and finding out I need a special type of gasket / removal tool etc!

I'll be fitting one of Xmans GT1749C hybrid turbos to my PD130 engine.

What model gasket do I need for the exhaust manifold? Does anyone have any part numbers etc? Should I change the inlet gasket too?

And what exactly is the method of removal? EGR, then inlet then exhaust manifold in that order? I've also seen quite a few reported exhaust manifold studs snapping, what can I do to prevent this?

Any replies would be muchly appreciated and roughly how long it will take for a novice like me.

Thanks a lot

Daniel

When i just changed both my cars turbos (after failure unfortunately) I just rang the dealer with a long list of bits i needed and they priced it all and faxed (yeah i know!) the quote back across

Shopping list is as follows:

inlet manifold gasket - dealer
Exhaust manifold gasket - ECP
turbo->downpipe gasket - ECP
Turbo->EGR gasket - ECP
Oil return gasket - dealer
Oil return pipe - dealer
Oil filter - ECP
Sump plug - ECP
new exhaust nuts - dealer
air filter - ECP
pollen filter - ECP
fuel filter - ECP

ETKA has it listed as the very descriptive "oil pipe" - part number 038 145 771 G

It tends to get bend quite easily so pays to have a spare.

Thanks for that Pastyboy

I've removed the things I know I definitely don't need, however with the things you've listed. Is it imperative that I get a new oil return pipe if mines in perfect working unbent order? Just trying to save money where I can really. I know i'll need the gaskets though definitely. Gasket is one of those words if you repeat over and over it loses it's meaning haha

The oil return pipe is pretty thin and we got one the first time around as the dealer said we'd need one.

Lucky we did as we managed to bend it badly getting the turbo out.

Second time around we knew what we were doing and were more careful and didn't have to replace it.

I did ask the dealer for if but they ordered in a more expensive pipe (50 on the diagram maybe) which was like £50 on it's own

With regards to the ECP gaskets it'd probably be 100% easier and only marginally more expensive to get the OEM parts

Any tips on removal or is it pretty straight forward?

If your not I don't think anyone else should help you on this thread with your questions....................... :bandit:

Awww thanks man! Nice to know I'm appreciated haha

+1 on the guide ;-)

it is good practice to always fit a new oil pipe with a new turbo

Oh sweet! Thanks for that, ordered the exhaust and downpipe gaskets.

I wonder why they don't sell inlet manifold gaskets on there?

yeah i dunno it does seem a bit of a lottery which bits they do and don't supply

not expensive items to get from the dealer though

I've received my gaskets from ACP however someone has just told me to ditch the perforated downpipe gasket as they're total rubbish apparently?

Does anyone know why he's said this?

Have you done this yet? :)

Changed the turbo on my VRS to a GTB1756 today, must apologise for not following your example and doing a guide........ :bandit:

Pretty easy job TBH,you will need access from under the car ideally to remove bottom turbo mount from block, and the lower oil return pipe fitting, and easier to get to the lower DP stud.

But apart from those you can do it all all from under the bonnet and the turbo lifts out easily ;)

They are metal ones as standard, only thing I could think is he means the perforated one could get blown out?

Great idea for a diy

All done mate, didn't have time to take pics though. Feels so so good now and it isn't even mapped yet!

Did it in around 4 hours or so but had a problem with the downpipe nuts being a bit dodgy.

I had a perforated one (results fromp google images not the actual ones)

under the blanking plate on my exhaust manifold and it did just get eaten away by the heat.

It started blowing and when taken off the gasket had just eaten itself on the side against the manifold, and seperated into it's 3 composite layers.

Replaced with a full metal one

and all good so far

I assume it'd be the same situation on the downpipe

Ive got my hybrid ordered. As mine went poof last night .

cleaning out all the pipe work ready of oil lol

Hi all,

Just ordering turbo and looking for what gaskets i need. I'm going to be doing it myself next weekend so want to get it all together ready for then.

I'm struggling to find most of the gaskets on ECP (ill ring dealer on monday for some but the more i can order online the better)

inlet manifold gasket - dealer

Exhaust manifold gasket - ECP (the only one I've actually found on ECP for £4.44)
turbo->downpipe gasket - ECP ( cant find this on their site, could somebody link me?)
Turbo->EGR gasket - ECP ( cant find this on their site, could somebody link me? do i still need one if i buy EGR delete kit? )
Oil return gasket - dealer
Oil return pipe - dealer (is this the same thing as an oil feed line. i.e. http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/braided-oil-feed-line-for-1-9-and-2-0-tdi.html - will the dealer one be much cheaper?)

Thanks

Will

You can get all the gaskets from Darkside if you want to order online.
