Hid issue

Featured Replies

Hey folks, was hoping someone can help me as having major hid issues. I have a fabia vrs, i had hid on the low beam without canbus ballast with no issues. I decided to then fit on my full beam (non canbus) as i drive about 8 miles on unlit roads without seeing any traffic. When i fitted the full beam i noticed that when activated i lost my milage display and trip meter. I first got cancellation adapter things and fitted these to main beam (no difference) and then placed them on low beam (no difference). I then bought canbus ballasts and i and i have found the same results, as soon as main beam is on i lose instruments. Ive found that the main beam is not on canbus as even without a bulb i get no bulb warning where as i do on low beam being disconnected. Im running out of ideas. Have you got any idea what can be done to fix this?

Remove the HID lamps and go back to standard, you should know the road like the back of your hand by now!

Already had one car need a new bumper because of a badger im not taking the risk again, better chance of seeing it

They are not designed for your car. That's why they are not working. They are also illegal assuming you have factory headlamps.

I had the same issue with my audi a4 ... HID's on low and high beam, as soon as you select the high beam it would turn off the traction control, the abs and the dash would light up like a Christmas tree. It's something to do with some sort of magnetic field created by the HID's.

I don't know exactly why... But if I were you, on my high beams I run 100w bulbs... They're white and very very bright (illegal) but it's on your high beams so you only use them when nobody else is on the road.

Then you won't have the problem and you'll still be able to see where you're going :)

MattH, without wanting to re-run old topics, and as an ex-traffic Sgt, you're wrong, but only in the sense of 'E' marking, and that's before we explore the difference between the MOT, and being legal to you use in a road or highway etc etc.

For instance, Headlamp washers and self levelling only need to be fitted and working for factory fitted xenons, and any light fitted to a motor vehicle must be adjusted in such a way as to not dazzle drivers coming on the opposite direction.

There's much much more, but it has been covered previously.

Out of interest javis9689, what make of HIDs did you fit, as SWMBO never had any issues fitting both to her Golf GT TDI; her current vRS has them fitted on low beam, and is just about to fit them to main beam (all from hids4u, whose products have always worked without fault)

LOL at this comment. Weather you know a road or not, it's still pitch black. The OP is trying to make it safer for himself to drive on the road in the dark, reverting back to standard isn't really a sensible reply is it. God.

I wish for the days when I was 20, had a mint Escort Mexico with 2-up, 2-down Cibies; like driving in daylight....!

And if this was the case, why bother about lights at all! Could save a small fortune :P

Well, apart from when you need to go on other roads you dont know.....

Aren't all aftermarket HID kits non E marked? Which makes them not for road use. He will be using them on the road, which would make them illegal?

I see even HIDS4U say their kits are not road legal. Make of that what you will.

Hids4u site says;

"Unfortunately no aftermarket HID kit is strictly road legal as you are changing the lighting system (from halogen to gas discharge) in your car and for this reason the bulbs can't be E marked which is a legal requirement. You also won't have the self leveling and washer systems installed which is also a legal requirement for HID and without these installed the kit would be an MOT failure. HID kits are plug and play so they are easy to remove and replace with standard bulbs come MOT time."

They are incorrect about the self levelling and washer systems, as the legislation is only for factory fitted items, and must work IF fitted.

Members on here have a certain well known make and spec of brake pads fitted, they are technically not road legal due to the (lack of) E marking issue, but unless they were a contributory factor in a RTC, there is no issue about being stopped by the police or VOSA.

26 yrs of enforcing such things, and determining the difference between a rule and a law, really opened my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning you experience or knowledge. I'm just saying that they are illegal. Wether they are tested at mot time or not.

I personally wouldn't use them, nor use race brake pads while driving on the roads.

The fact that HIDs4U mention they are "easily removed come MOT time" makes me hope they go out of business very quickly.

They also say HIDs are fine for reflectors...

Whatever sells more I guess.

I hate HID's, they may be safer for the driver but they certainly aren't for everyone else, totally unnecessary. I love the idiots that fit blue bulbs though, their lights are noticeably dimmer than normal, a bit like they are  :giggle:

HIDs in projectors don't annoy me, but blue ones are funny. They're often pretty dim as you say and the auto dimming mirror turns them into a faint glow. Congrats, you've ruined your headlights :)

It's not HIDs/xenons thats the issue it's the fitment of them into normal halogen lights.

Yeah don't worry about blinding other road users haha

I'd suggest driving slower would make it safer.

When someone coming the other way ends up veering into the path of your car because they're blinded by your badly aligned headlamps, it will cause a fair bit more damage than a badger.

I find Osram Nightbreaker Plus halogen bulbs a good, noticeable upgrade for the dipped beams (which are E marked) on my car. I find the standard main beams adequate, but I imagine the difference if I swapped the main beam bulbs too would be very noticeable.

Each to their own I suppose. I just get sick of being blinded by Barrys driving in convoy in the pitch black over the tops of the Penninies. Funny thing is, I often see them stranded when it's foggy over the tops, as they can't see a thing through the brightly lit fog a the end of their bonnets. I suppose if everything is fitted correctly and aligned as it should be, there should be no issues. I guess that's the problem when most people fit these things?

Couldn't have put it better myself.and then you have the Barry's that think it looks cool to tint their headlights lol WHY????

At the end of the day I'd say they are not suitable for your car whether they are quality bulbs or not. I'd suggest removing everything and get some quality e marked bulbs instead. Problem sorted. Other than that post the name/details of the kit/bulbs you have and someone might be able to help or even better contact the seller

he's not going to be driving with his main beam on when other cars are coming towards him is he :S this is what the topic is about, his main beam, which normal people only use on dark roads when there's no other cars coming, you must drive round with then on constantly blinding people do you?
