Quick question about mileage and a remap.

Featured Replies

Hi. I have Vrs (54plate ASZ engine) with 180k on the clock. Full history and well maintained mechanically. It has all been motorway miles (2k plus a month) over the past few years. It pull like a train and doesn't feel it's miles at all.

My question is I'm pretty sure my egr has failed and I want remove it anyway. But would it be wise to remap a car with this mileage?

Or should I just replace the egr so the EML light goes off? (Code 19586, egr range exceeded) iv had the egr off and cleaned it thoroughly but no improvement)

Opinions please,

Thanks.

Hi mate I have just sold my asz engine vrs I was in same mind as you are considering the mileage but went for it in the end I ended up doing a hybrid turbo and all the rest of it lol at 140k miles and it was all fine just get the egr changed/deleted make sure cam belt etc all ok and get it mapped and enjoy

Cheers fella,

Cambelt, water pump and all tensioners etc were done about 10k miles ago so all good there.

Thanks for your reply,

It's good to hear that higher mileage engines can still return good results from mods.

Cheers.

My fabia has recently ticked 170,000 running a 100bhp over stock :D

I'm sticking a motor with 180k in my rally car and it's going to have pretty much 100% abuse the only thing I would worry about is the turbo at that mileage . I may put some bigend shells in if I get the time before the 1st event but otherwise it will be stock mechanically mate.

that should be all good then mate, glad to be a help, also consider the turbo though what sort of life has it had before etc mapping it will put extra strain on it unless you have already changed it or its been done that you know of

The turbo is still the original unit, that is really the only thing that worries me.

As I say the car is not smokey, noisy or under powered but 180k is a lot of miles

On a turbo to go and turn the power up on it :(.

I'd swap the turbo in that case, low mile pd150 unit then map to 180bhp, nice and safe.

i would 2nd that mate before going down the hybrid route i went through 2 pd 130 turbos on just a stage 1 custom map

You're tempting fate somewhat, your turbo is still in one piece because you have a well-maintained stock engine which until recently had a functioning EGR system, motorway miles are all well and good but I wonder how long your turbo, clutch and DMF would last with a remap.

As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke...

I completely agree, you are lucky if I now do more than 100miles in a week, but I want to remove the egr so I can keep the engine free from carbon

Build up, the car has also had the elephant mod done to help.

However it would seem I cannot remove the egr without getting a remap!

If it's possible, could someone point me in the right direction?

Can I have just the egr mapped out without anything else done?

Cheers.

Yes you can

If it were me id just fit a 2nd hand egr valve from someone on here. Lots doing deletes

You already have the elephant mod so its not as important. Its the mix of oil and exhaust gases that makes that horrible tar

With the elephant mod the build up will hardly be noticeable. Clean the egr valve every 20/30k and it'll be sweet!

Yeah, your right.

I think that's the route I'm going to go down.

There was very little build up in the intake anyway, I just didn't want it to start getting clogged as I'm now doing mainly town driving.

On borrowed time IMO, however if it going to fail it will just happen sooner than it would if you left it alone.

So, do you think I'd be better saving my money and instead of a remap, egr delete etc. replace the turbo and leave it alone?

I'm more than happy with the car and I don't crave more performance. Although some extra mpg would be nice.

I assume if/when my turbo fails it will potentially be a huge bill, ie not just bolting a new one on and away I go?

Thanks for all the advice so far guys,

I appreciate it.

Terry.

Just bank money up if it blows it blows then you'll have some cash immediately to replace if it does

I wouldn't touch anything on it :)
