Petrol engines: available size and vs diesel for short trips

Whilst the Octie has been having her service, Mrs H has had a courtesy Fabia 1.2 to run around in and since she likes it, we going to get one for the 'daily runaround'.

 

I'll probably get a new one since it stops me taking a £5K or more hit all at once. However, Mrs H found the  1.2 lacking 'go'.

 

First question: I cannot find a 1.4 or 1.6 petrol in the Skoda configurator. Am I blind? Or does the 1.2 16V come with more grunt?

 

Second question: I;ve always thought of short trips as being a diesel killer, hence the interest in a petrol engine but is that still the case?

There's more than one 1.2 Fabia - the 69PS 3-cylinder and the more powerful (and newer technology) 1.2 TSI 4 cylinder turbo lumps...with up to 105PS.

 

Only other size petrol is the 1.4 vRS.

Hello Matt, yes the petrol engines are good but the TSI 1.2 has a four cylinder turbo engine, as opposed to the 1.2 three cylinder engine with normal aspiration (makes this one good but a bit slower than the TSI engine). In fact the 105ps TSI is a fantastic engine, economical and lively and drives like a diesel with huge torque from 1500rpm. Drive one and you'll see what I mean! You are right about the diesels and short trips. They are a complete no no if you are not combining that with longer faster runs on a regular basis. Good luck and let us know what you get.

In terms of "old" engine size comparisons, the 86PS 1.2 TSI engine would be comparable to what would have been a 1.4 some years ago, and the 1.2 TSI 105PS to an "old" 1.6.

 

I did make a mistake above - there seems (according to the SUK website) to be a 60PS and 69PS 1.2 12V 3-cylinder - although it would be guesswork which one you had as a loan car but my money would be on the 60PS..courtesy cars generally end up being the lowest power/spec in most cases.

Thanks for that. From the 'feel' of the courtesy car I think we were indeed the bottom end. Personally I thought it did well enough and I was more worred about the brakes. I should caveat that by saying I'd just got out of the Octavia with winter tyres into the Fabia on summers on a cold frosty morning.

 

I've called the Sales people at our local Skoda emporium (Crawley Down) and will let you know what we get although from the Configurator, a 1.2 86PS in cappacino, with fog lights looks good. :)

If you felt you'd like rear disc brakes, they're reserved for the 105PS versions...

The 1.2 htp does come in 2 power outputs. The 60ps which is 6 valve or the 70ps which is 12v.

Any idea what spec the car you had was? If it was anything better than the most basic model (black enterior door handles, h4 halogen headlights as apose to projectors etc) my bets on it was the 70ps version you had

The tsi is a fantastic engine. Goes well enough with the 105bhp

Rear discs are only on the VRS or the Green Line II nothing to really do with engine size or trim they are limited to these 2 specific models at least in the UK.

Oddly it was the front, it felt like it got quite 'spongy' on the road. I suspect it was suffering from being 'the world's fastest car' as I think P J Rourke and Jeremy Clarkson once described these vehicles.

 

105's all seem to DSG which is flappy paddle / automatic?

Not all 105hp 1.2 TSIs come with DSG, I've got the Monte Tech which has a 5 sp Manual box.

It's a great engine though and does feel like a high revving diesel compared to a non turbo petrol.

You should test drive a monte if your interested.

I did, with the 1.2 tsi 105 with a manual box. Brilliant engine, but the ride on the monte is no where near as smooth as my se, due to the low profile tyres and it could of had sports suspension also.

My soul is reserved for an Octavia III estate, VRs, in metallic grey.....

The TSi models get bigger front brakes than the three cylinder petrol and three cylinder diesels.

 

You can fit 14" wheels on the three cylinder models but need 15" wheels to clear the brakes on the TSi,

Maybe not strictly relevant to the OP, but the 105ps 1.6 16v tiptronic also has rear discs as standard. Not sure if the manual version does.

Well the 1.2 105 Tsi definitely has rear drums and the brakes on mine are great. The DSG is a sweet combination with this engine, very smooth surprisingly quick and economical. The ride is also top notch, but then..I'm more than a little biased to this model as I can't fault it for my needs ;)

Having had 2 fabia diesels, I can say that the earlier 3 pot PD engine had no problems with short journeys around town etc, HOWEVER, the later CR90 TDI (current) engine (with DPF) is definitely not an engine that responds well to short journeys. In the winter it struggles to reach full operating temperature which does not help.

Although I miss the economy of the diesel, I feel that my 1.2 TSI is much better suited to the job. Performance for a small engine is very good indeed - I have the 86 version.
