Factory extras - inform insurance company?

Featured Replies

Virtually every feature on Audis are optional extras.

I've not been asked what options were specced from new on my one.

But there's about 7k of extras on my car.

Seats, steering wheel, interior trim, ICE, tints all optional upgrade/extras

But all the factory fitted items etc are on that little label in the boot in code form aren't they?

So it only leaves retro fit, self modding  and dealer added options which would need declared?

You guys got me worried, so I called my insurer (LV).

They weren't bothered about factory fitted extras, only modifications that had taken place after the vehicle had been built.

I've never had an insurer who's been bothered about factory fitted extras, most cars these days have them anyway.

The key to all of this is to truthfully answer all questions asked. Then you won't have a problem. However in the world of online insurance its all too easy to scan read and not look closely at fine print or the listed "assumptions" upon which insurers build qoutes.

In 2007 my house was flooded (storm damage technically) when much of Hull and East Riding went under. Upon arriving at my house to see the damage the very 1st thing my loss adjuster did was check the status of the locks on my front and back doors. I asked "why, I've been flooded not burgled" to which he replied "my job is to minimise or if possible prevent the amount of money my company will pay out in the event of a claim, if you have lied or misled us in anyway I won't pay out..."

My wife had to hold me back as I was understandably upset having seen the ground floor of my home destroyed.

I hadn't lied, they insurance did all they could to minimise there payout. It cist them £72k to repair my home in the end. Imagine if they had found wiggle room!

I could go on with insurance horror stories which family and friends suffered from the same flooding but I'd be here all day. But know this, declare everything and always tell the truth and ask if unsure. Oh, and pick insurance by reputation and experience and not to save a few quid as just like it did in my case it may prove to be the most important purchase you ever make!

I think that's good advice . Any wriggle room can and will be exploited. These people are experts at reducing their losses by finding ways to avoid paying out, praying the minimum.

I had to move from Tesco Insurance when I bought my S4 mid term through a policy because they wouldn't insure it without me declaring the Sat Nav (fully built in & looks identical to one without) & the upgraded leather Supersports seats.

It took the premium from £340 to a ludricous £800. I argued the point with three levels of management at the call centre before giving up and losing 3 months of cover & moving to another insurer who counted them as manufacturers spec.

So as much as I don't agree with it, each insurer looks at this differently and definitely worth asking their position at the point of cover.

See my post above - Tesco insurance definitely do :(

All this discussion just proves a point as with all products "Cheapest price is not always best value"

Indeed however considering Direct Line have been one of the worst I've ever dealt with and not the cheapest I'm not sure you can choose on image either.

In fact I'd go to say they were worst than M&S insurance when someone rear ended swmbo.

Just phoned Sky Insurance.

They checked and their line with me was that I don't need to declare factory fitted options - but she has made a note of them on the record, no charge for this.

Thanks Sky - once again excellent customer service.

Just asked Skoda Insurance when getting my new policy and no need to tell them.

Did Skoda Insurance ask you if you bought on PCP? They didn't with me.

No.

Now M&S supposedly have an excellent reputation......goes to show, trust no-one

I'm with Direct Line, primarily as I was given full no claims for being previously insured on SWMBO's policy and coming from a company car, it cut the hassle from the quote process, I did however declare all the factory options, they did not charge any extra but some of which they noted, eg 18"Alloys, Park Assist, Metallic Paint, some they did not, eg Winter Pack, so I assume they only include items that are more likely to be affected by a claim. I also take the view that it is better to declare all options on a new car for the avoidance of doubt in the event of a claim, especially in the first 12 months if the car is written off, as most policies cover a new for old replacement during this period. i would be concerned they may otherwise try to fob you off as insured for only a standard spec replacement, and quoting a list price including options may not cover you as they seem to state market value not exceeding £40k on most policies these days. Don't think I will stay with Direct Line next year though as for the last couple of years they have tried to whack up SWMBOs premium at renewal, but price checking against their own website has actually enabled us to negotiate the same or better cover and lower excess for less premium than the previous year! Basically, you have to shop around and be prepared to negotiate, there is no customer loyalty these days, shame, just a fact of life!

So, in theory, anyone with metallic, sprint (banana) yellow or meteor (primer) grey has to declare that as it is an optional extra?

You automatically declare the colour ;)

But not if it is an option?

So if you don't declare metallic paint, why declare anything else?

They'll know which colours are metallic. The paint they don't care about. In some cases flat colours cost MORE than metallic.

So if your V5 says red, is it Rio red or the non metallic red?

My point is that certain colours are options, so how far do you take this declaring factory options?

My policy specifically states that factory options are covered and do not need to be declared.

I called Esure yesterday, they aren't interested in options, just the overall purchase price. Even then, they don't seem to care for specifics, for example mine fell between the £7500 and £50000 range.

Don't shoot the messenger :)

This is such a non-issue. Move on..

I was just about to say this thread is going nowhere.....
