suspension upgrades, looking for advise

Featured Replies

am looking into what to do about upgrading the suspension on the fabia vrs, lots of options out there, damper - springs or coilovers, do i need or will be better off with new  new bushes ,droplinks, top mounts, wishbones whatever else?

so hoping to simplify the situation with just one simple question, so with a budget of 1000 to spend on parts alone, whats my best option?

If you're doing that way I would buy the following

Ap coilovers - 450

A rear arb kit of some form - jabbsport, whiteline or h&r - 250 tops (jabba)

Seat sport strut brace - 80 from dealer

Then have someone look over the bushes when they fit the rest. Console bushes can go and you will need droplinks (25quid) that are shorter

DONT BUY JOMS. Buying new I would have got ap's. Buy once buy right

Im buying off that list too

I have Weitec gt's overall a good suspension setup not too harsh a nice little improvement.

what about top mounts is it worth it, and say u just thought fuk it, and decided to have all new bushes throughout even it if broke budget slightly, would a complete set of powerflex bushes be a good option to go with, seem to have heard good things about using them?

What you guys think, will this cover everything, can always add rear anti roll bar and front strut at a later date, but will that be all I need to get the basics set in place, and be about as good as i can get you think for the cash invested?

Nothing wrong with JOMS,

Apps were a harder ride than JOMS

Those coilovers are £700 on awesome gti mate :)

The saving will almost cover a rear arb from there too.

AP's are no way harder than JOM's. Although i haven't got either but I've been in a fab with either kits. AP much more refined and controlled over the bouncy crashy JOMs

I'd rather go for a lowering springs and shocks combo. Very happy with the ones I have from AP. Nice comfortable ride and a nice drop.

i prefer the idea of shocks and springs too ..... plus it might save you a few extra quid to spend on other components that may need replacing e.g. on the 04vrs's the front arb had plastic stops which deteriorate crack and break away im sure some one said that it can cause damage to the subframe once they have gone .... if yours is in a bad way it may be worth factoring in a roll bar kit where you get a front and rear roll bar

I also have them and rate them. Ap springs and dampers look lower than 25 mm too

I'd go for something like the Weitec Hicon GT or KW V1 coilover kit matched with a Whiteline rear ARB and a set of Powerflex bushes, job done and job done well.

Bushes first, always done that with cars I've owned, the difference is quite amazing.

different platform I know, but I ran a mk4 Golf on JOM coilovers and they weren't good. cheap though. currently have H&R upside down monotube jobbies on the Ibiza, firm but way nicer than the JOMs on the Golf

Definitely do the console bushes, SEAT ones are fine at the back, Powerflex at the front (I think that's the right way around). Beware the engine mounts as some of them turn the car into a vibrator. Also, it's worth investing in new mounting plates and bump stops. They have to come off anyway and they only add £30 or so to the overall job.

I'm on my second set of Eibach springs and Koni FSD's. The first set started to feel a bit saggy after 90,000 miles on the car. They won't give you an extreme drop but they are very comfy and easy to live with. They also work very well as suspension where a lot of the cheaper springs seem to be cosmetic first and handling second.

I would also recommend the JabbaSport rear anti-roll bar. It's probably the most extreme RARB on the market and it really transforms the car's ability to sit in bends without feeling like it's going to throw you off like Scalextric.

You should just about be able to get this entire setup for £1000 fitted if you use someone like Unit 18 in Milton Keynes or Shark in Mansfield.

Rarb. Some poly bushes in the console. And some GOOD tyres. .

always confuses me why people spend throusands on suspension then leave crap tyres on or put 'stretched' tyres on

anywyas . Merry Christmas everyone !!

Buy good tyres and a decent set of coilovers (remember the Fabia is a heavy old lump)

Rarb and front anti roll bar make naff all difference if ya car low enough on coilovers you'll be fine.

'Cos stretched tyres are where it's at!

Tyre stretch is one of my pet hates. Yes it's pretty when on a show car sitting sti. But where is it any good in the real world.

Your alloys are more likely to be damaged over bumps or against curbs. There is less rubber on the road = less grip. And the rubber that is on the road is deformed so even less grip. Should emagine that tread wear is all uneven.

Unless the place its all at is in a hedge after thw first corner . Its usless

it winds me up haha. Mini rant over now :)

Can't agree more haha

To me a car is there to be driven. That's why I really don't understand super low cars, what's the point driving everywhere with constant fear that you might hit something slightly sticking out or absolutely crawling over speed bumps / changing your route because of speed bumps.

Just takes the fun out of it for me.

But then again it's each to their own, if it makes them happy :)

Haha glad you agree. :)

I keep getting tempted by that AP shock and spring kit.

It just seems to be too good to be true for £233 so I can't bring myself to buy it. From the pictures I've seen the drop is perfect too.

Slam 'n' stretch is for urban cruisers, they live and drive in cities, posing outside takeaway shops and rarely exceeding 40mph unless it's in a straight line.

Serious drivers need something altogether different, slam 'n' stretch simply doesn't work on UK B roads, you'll end up in a hedge with liquefied internal organs.

Leave that crap to the chip shop poseurs.

Oh, and JOMS are terrible, everyone on here says they are because they actually are. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Read posts by me, joms are in no way better than ap they have a horrible rebound to begin with.

I can't be bothered retyping why.
