Battery drain

Featured Replies

Went to work this morning and checked the "PR codes" (these are codes specific to my car as to what is fitted to my car from the factory)  and it specifies a 12v 340 Amp 70aH battery from factory, Then spoke to parts and the replacement is a 12v 380 Amp 72aH battery, Very strange indeed. Will be doing a bit more research over the next few days.

The 340A is a DIN rating.  Mine says that.  The equivalent and more normally quoted spec is SAE EN 570A, which is also on my battery.  But this is way undersize for a 2L diesel, IMO, especially a DSG variant with two gear trains to churn round in cold oil.  The Bosch S5008 is SAE EN 780A, or a third as much again.  Mercedes fit S6 batteries to all their range, btw.

This is a very interesting thread for me as our 12-plate Superb has developed battery problems: the battery does not appear to charge fully and will drain to the point of not being able to start the card within a couple of weeks of charging it.

The car has been at Skoda (Milton Keynes) for 10 days now. Initially they told us they has confirmed there was a problem, but they weren't sure what. More recently they said there was a problem with a fan coming on when the car was parked.

Today they told us there is nothing wrong, and it's just down to short journeys.

As you can imagine, I'm not particularly pleased with this, especially as you say the problem with under specified batteries is well known. I've done a quick Google search to try to find documented evidence but could not find anything - can you point me in the right direction?

If anybody can provide advice on how best to proceed, I'd be grateful. Is it worth calling the "08457" customer service number?

[/quot I had the same problems dealer insisted not a battery problem fitted a BOSCH S5008 Battery is 12v capacity 77AH CCA(EN)780 A the car was left at a hotel for two weeks recently started first turn of the key, with the "GOOD" Skoda battery it would not start if left for three days !!!

I do 25 miles each way to work and back and some times I may do 2-3 short trips while at work (1-3 miles max). I had to call Skoda Assist the other day as it would not start. Battery is two years old and starting to show signs that it will not hold much of a charge.

Skoda Assist (via RAC) were with me and I was awat within the hour which at 4pm I think was not too bad.

I wonder what the AH and CCA is on the FL version with stop start?

Just to add insult to injury, the Skoda garage have now said that they will not return the car until we have paid £130 towards the cost of the investigation, in which they concluded that there was no problem.

If anybody can point me in the direction of "well known battery issues" it would now be even more helpful.

Wow, so sounds like they have impounded your car - a car that is still covered by warranty, that you took in to them in good faith expecting them to investigate what you reasonably believed to be a fault with the vehicle.  Unless they notified you in advance of the costs (and you agreed at the time), then you should of course refuse to pay.  Do you have a courtesy car of theirs that you can with-hold as leverage?

I'd go through Skoda UK. There's no way the garage can be charging you for this....

This follows up my back-history on the Frustrating Starting Issues thread, but seems relevant.

Perhaps I should have posted earlier, but the Dealership did find a significant drain that they suggest is a module not shutting down in a timely manner.  An overnight clamp amps recording showed it active for 11 hours, then a big current spike before dropping to near zero.  The new battery is still being drained, but hasn't been killed yet.

Going back in in exchange for a courtesy car next week until it is fixed under warranty.

Will post this on the Battery thread also.

How does one achieve an  overnight clamp amps recording ?

Follow up for anybody interested:

Contacted Skoda UK, who persuaded the dealer to refund the money I had paid.

Had the car back 10 days, and the battery was flat again.  Now, I know the car is mainly doing "short" trips, i.e. 5 miles/20 minutes, but I still don't think the battery should be going from fully charged to totally dead in 10 days.

I decided to call Skoda Assist ("Car won't start"), and the very nice man jumped the car to start it, tested the output of the alternator ("it's fine") then did a battery test.  Which failed.  Which meant he could replace the battery, there and then, with a new one from his van: slightly higher capacity, higher CCA.

So, I'm very happy with Skoda Assist who identified the problem and (hopefully) fixed it within 40 minutes with the car sat on my driveway.  Very unhappy with Jardine's Skoda in Milton Keynes who had the car for 10 days investigating why the battery was discharging only to say "there's nothing wrong with the battery or the car".

So the moral is: if you have battery problems, call Skoda Assist.  Don't go to the dealer.

This thread is a bit of a mystery to me, a new battery is not expensive and an easy fit, many dealers seem to spend a lot more money wasting time, Is it that there's very little profit in battery sales. We would always change a battery first and then see how it goes but that's on bigger things where downtime is far more expensive than cars.

I had exactly the sane issues now have a BOSCH S5008 Battery 12v capacity 77AH CCA(EN)780 and the car now starts brilliantly the standard battery is not up to the job .
