Sam's Mk2 Blue VRS Estate

Small things, but the Heko's really help the lines of the estate, that first pic the car looks really low and long, which we all know are not characteristics of the Furb vRS.

They are nice looking from the right angle. Parked in a car park it noticeable how tall they are.

Just found your superb journal thread. Will be following.

A few more goodies coming soon.

Retrofit cruise control for awesome gti. Such a shame to have to go down to see them for fitting.......maybe a few more bits and bobs will find there way onto the car when I get down there.

Heat wrap for the down pipe and cooler pipe to try and help temps a bit.

Different upper glovebox with the latch which will get rid (hopefully) of the bl00dy rattling the one fitted makes which is just sprung loaded.

One thing I'm undecided on tho is wether to go for the vibratechnics completed dog bone mount or just the poly bush insert?

I know sparkly rated the former but there is a fair price difference....has anyone tried the latter?

Looks good what are you doing with the gigaros?

you were bloody sharp getting them ya bugegr! I was right behind you! lol!

they look good :)

I swapped the gigaros for these.

Sorry shark, I thought I got lucky with these! A nice set of wheels.

The difference in ofset is the equivalent of 18 mm spacers all round so it looks wide on the front.

Another just washed pic.

They look great, would have looked better on mine though ! :p

Are they 18s on that MrBurdon?

  • Author

Yep 18"s.

Although the winters have gone on tonight. Bit of a bummer though, both rear bearings have gone!

Yeah that is a bummer.. Just when winter comes round.. How are the 18's do you need to alter anything because of the wheels being a different size?? I've got my eye on some wolfraces I think they are.. I think they'd complement mine well, but they're expensive, them on yours look very well good buy (y)

I used this link to help find the ofset difference from standard.

http://www.willtheyfit.com

The fit of the 18 is all good. Iv done 300 miles on them and not felt any rubbing or knocking.

The standard gigaro wheels are ofset of 41 and 7 inch wide. These iv fitted are ofset 35 and 8 inches.

Imo 18"s are too big for the hatchback but look fine on the estate.

I also think that an ofset of 39 would suit best on the front. The rears are fine at 35.

Yeah i think theyd look overly big on the hatch, but they do look good on your estate it is a really nice looking motor that one!!

Wheel bearings done, it was unbelievable how much noise was coming from them! Fitted 15 inch wheels and now literally no road noise at all.

Do miss having the big wheels on though!

15 inch??? You'll have to put a pic of that... You didn't have the bigguns on long did you mate??

how many miles has the car done?

Will get some pics tonight - just had them refurbed after a failed DIY attempt. lol

Shockingly, 32000 miles. Bit i did notice there was not dust covers on the hubs so i reckon thats why they've given up so soon.

How much was it for your bearings? Think mine need replacing. Also the front ones. Got a weird knock on my right hand side front. Cv joints been replaced so wheel bearing are next.

i went for the full hub assembly, not just the wheel bearing.

I got both rear hubs for £72 and was fitted for £60. I think the front ones are more difficult to replace than the rears so expect to pay a bit more.

Ball joints are always good for a knock - maybe have a look and see if there ok before changing the bearings.

Sorry to carry on on your thread. But can I check my ball joints myself or is it a garage job? From where did you source your parts? Cant seem to find a 'one stop shop' for our cars. Euro is definitely not one. Asked them for wishbone bushes, put my reg plate in and ended up with console bushes. Had to take the shop assistant to see my vrs badges to prove that I had a vrs petrol as "they only made diesel mate, I should know" lol.

A garage can do check easily but I find the best way is the jack each corner up, take the wheel off and use a crow bar to find how much play is in the bushes.

Also when the car is parked normally get a mate to turn the steering full lock either way while your looking at bushes from underneath for any play. You will also hear any clunks and which side there coming from.

I normally source parts from a place called TPS and fit myself. but this time the hubs were bought and fitted by my local car shop.

For part numbers I use the link below.

Brilliant thankyou. Will have a nosey today :)

Just to add. The last two cars iv changed bushes on (VW beetle and Nissan X trail) i bought the whole wishbone with ball joints and bushes already pressed in. This makes life so much easier as no pressing bashing is needed. Just pull the old on out and slot the new one it.

If you do change anything be sure to get the alignment done as on both cars above, the toe was in by about 7 degrees.
