vRS real MPG

Featured Replies

I've got to go to West Somerset in the first week of June & that will be a fairly mixed bag of roads from small locals up to M3, A303, A358 & A39, so it will be a right hotchpotch of slow, medium & fast driving over a distance of ~175 miles.

At least I can look forward to some decent roads as soon as I reach Hampshire!  :)

I'm averaging 54 MPG in my TDI vRS.

Recent long run, and being quite heavy footed on the motorway I averaged 64 MPG.

The TDI IMO offers a very good blend of performance and economy. All things being equal I'd have the petrol but they're not.

Having driven over 5000 miles, I now average around 46 on a mixture of motorways, A roads and B roads.  That's with fairly careful driving most of the time.

On a very recent, very unexciting drive at a fairly steady 70mph for almost all of 280 miles, it was just over 50 mpg.

I don't know how some of the posters on here get their significantly higher figures but good luck to them.

Perhaps yours is automatic like mine, and with very steady right foot I'm getting around the same...

No, it's manual.  I was expecting to drive loads of miles when I bought it so I went for economy.

There is obviously a lot of variation due to driving styles, for the record I have only covered 500 miles so far but long term is showing as ~50.

As the engine is tight and there hasn't been a lot of decent length journeys, I am happy with that so far.

Slightly OT but how do you switch between long term, since start, and since refuel, on the maxi dot display ? I can do it on the infotainment display but haven't worked out the MD method

Ah thanks, will try that next time I am out :)

Ok, here goes.

63 plate VRS TSI DSG hatch, just under 6k miles on the clock.

Ran two tests over a period of 2k miles.

1st test, 99 Tesco fuel, mixed driving at various times of the day, absolutely thrashed the car everywhere and achieved an average over the 1k miles of 33.6 mpg.

2nd test, 99 Tesco fuel, same routes as the above, however stuck to speed limits, kept my distance, approached junctions and roundabouts as you're meant to etc etc, generally driving sensibly (this was hard work as I think we're a tuned to just get in and drive fast, or at least get to where we are going as quick as we can!!),.......1k miles with an average of 44.7mpg.

Of course the first test was the more fun, however over 1700 miles per month, I worked out driving sensibly would save me just under £70.

This engine can achieve the stated numbers without a doubt and has proved this to me several times now, this was also calculated on brim to brim although my trip computer over the tests has actually been very accurate.

Telboy for the ability to resist temptation over the second of your 1k mile tests I salute you whilst I've gotta question is £70 really worth missing all that fun ? Obviously, I do only half your mileage so, my opinion is gonna be different.

You've definitiley got a point, driving this car sensibly is very very difficult, it has such a lovely spread of power and torque that makes covering ground so easy.

£70 a month over the year is £940 which on my mileage can't be fully ignored although I think I'm just going to enjoy the car when I can and try and aim for somewhere in between the 33 and 44mpg which to be honest is as good a match for my last insignia bi turbo diesel although bearing in mind the VRS has a better power/torque to weight and is cheaper to fuel and lots more fun, I think I'm on to a winner.

Just refuelled and filled with 53l of JS Super Unleaded this time.

Last tank 353 miles (23 days) primarily in Eco Mode, returned an average of 30.07 mpg, which 90% of which was in urban environment, with the remaining 10% being country roads.

Having to deal with the local plebs who wander around our local roads at well below the speed limits don't help my fuel economy.

Did an 80 mile trip today, mix of normal (crappy) country roads, fast two-lane motorway, city driving and a little bit of pootling around for some shopping and ended up with an average speed of 40 mph and almost 37 mpg. Not f...... bad, I'd say!  :giggle:

PS: Only used Eco for the city part, the rest were at pretty decent speeds in Individual...

Those dastardly visiting 'plebs' must've really caused you to drain you tank. I've never managed to add that much fuel even after playing fuel light bingo for far too long.

I just brim it every time, right to the top of the neck of the filler. The Maxidot told me I had about 20 miles left when I tanked up.

Also the pumps at Godalming where I filled up are brand new (about 2 weeks old) and so the calibration should be absolutely spot on,

I can't get an average of 33 when driving like Miss Daisy, never mind thrashing it!  My average is 31.6 now, with a mix of mainly back roads to work, with the odd motorway run. That's by being careful with it.

Thrashing it gets me the low 20's average.

Best I've had so far is an average of 41 mpg going from Birmingham to Barnstaple, keeping to speed limits, using cruise control most of the time, and gently accelerating.

Hi guys, I'm going to tack on the back of this thread.

At the risk of people posting a 'please read the thread' comment, can any of you guys quickly steer me on real world economy of the TSI with the DSG?

I'm fairly typical in driving style, I'm no Miss Daisy but I'm not a flat out person all the way either. Most of my journeys are more than 10 miles through A roads and M ways with a touch of country pooling thrown in.

My mileage has fallen significantly of late and I'm wondering whether a Diesel is still the way to go for me, I seem to recall a general rule stating that if you do less than a certain mileage then the gains a Diesel offers no longer apply.

As I say, sorry if the answers in this thread, quick reply please.

Well I've had my car in Eco mode for the last month or so and its been returning around the 31 mpg mark, +/- ~.4/.5 mpg and I do give it the boot occasionally & most or my driving is done on semi rural & town roads.

Ok, I could just about live with low 30s

I think it is typically if you do under 10,500 miles per annum that a petrol is considered better, however don't quote me on that,..

My TSI VRS has achieved over 44 mpg on a good run and is even happy to return 33mpg when I give it the boot and you can't have a TSI without giving it the boot once too often!!

Put it in context, and 30 real world mpg for a 220hp 155mph petrol car is pretty good.

In my youf*, I had an XR3i, 1600cc, no turbo and ~120 bhp if I recall, that never did much more tbh , and was no where near as quick.

* deliberate speeling mistoke :p

I'm happy because it's a darn sight better than the 25-26 mpg of my previous car (which will remain anonymous because I'm so ashamed of it!).

Same with my TSI VRS

Ok guys thank you.

Just seems the economy figures vary by quite a large amount.

Now, I'm not daft enough to think you all drive the same over the same sorts of roads in the same traffic conditions but reading through a bit of this thread, looks like a 15mpg (ish) variance which to me is a bit more than could realistically put down to driving habits / conditions?

Maybe I'm over analysing it but if I could reasonably expect 30-35 mpg in normal driving conditions then that makes it a viable alternative to Diesel based on my anticipated mileage.

I am of the belief that if you can achieve a modest 30-35 mpg with a TSi vRS doing everyday normal driving, then you're doing well.
