Any problems with the fuel flow sensors in practice?

Horner wants the sensors an the max flow rate kicked out as the Renault engine is at a disadvantage to the Mercedes. The FIA put the flow rate rule in to keep the level of turbo boost down.

Still haven't heard the other teams complaining.

  • Not completely sold on the nose regs for this year either, but some interesting designs came out however can't say Im sold on the ones that are just blatantly appendages (eg TorroRosso or ForceIndia).

What a mental race! On the edge of my seat the whole time fantastic. Hamilton from pit lane to 3rd, Alonso done a great job and I think my driver of the day has to be Ricciardo, just massively impre

Dry race to start, but Christian Horner Doesn't trust the weather forecast as it has been unreliable so far,  a bit like the readings from the fuel flow sensor

No engine roar. Teams conserving everything. Stands and circuit half full.

F1 losing the plot!

Bring back "go as fast as you can" racing.

Mercedes seem to have everything under control.

Ricciardo has inherited all Mark Webbers bad luck.

Ferrari and Mclaren well off of the pace.

Terrible performance from McLaren getting 1st and 2nd on the podium, obviously well off the pace.

But then hindsight is a wonderful thing!

That was Mercedes?

McLaren got 6th and 9th.

Doh, i heard it wrong on the wireless, and sorry for my stupidity.

EDIT

, seen the results and got my M & Ms sorted.

Sorry, i do not know my R's from my Elbow.

Ricciardo has inherited all Mark Webbers bad luck.

Or did Vettel throw a wobbly after the race in Australia and Dietrich had a word in Horner's ear?

Mercedes had the measure of the field by some margin. Hamilton looked like he could have stopped off at a Little Chef and still won easily.

Wonder if Claire Williams will give Massa the 'hairdryer' treatment for disobeying team orders?

Other than that, it wasn't a fantastic race and it was a shame Kimi got a puncture so early in the race.

Only one week to go Bahrain, though I'll be away and not sure if I'll be able to watch it.

Anyone else thinking that Eddie Jordan looks and sounds much better as an empty space?

I love the noise they make, yeah it's a bit quieter but sound wicked with the turbo on slowing down. Didnt see much conserving myself, tyres were much better than last year and they were all good on the fuel front, all seemed to be going for it most of the time. I'm liking it so far, but we are only 2 races in.

Ahhhhh, watching sky I cant say I miss Eddie or David really. Switched over for a few min and went straight back to Damon and Johnny. :D

BBC coverage just so uninspiring too with dullsville team of Coulthard and Edwards. Dreadful.

Bring on Moto GP.

  1. I agree; we actually have engine notes back rather than just A NOISE. As for the reduced dB level, this was inevitable with turbo-compounding (direct where you use the turbo to supply direct power or indirect where you use it to charge an ERS)

I'll take that as a yes, although I suppose I should have expected Sky trolls telling us how everything is better when you spend £40 a month on Murdock-vision!

Got to say, after listening to some of the complete and utter drivel spouted by DC on Sunday, £40 sounds cheap as a way of avoiding it!

And why, oh why do we not have Gary Anderson on any more? This p***es me off more than any other commentary changes the BBC have made for this season, he was the sort of down to earth person you needed to cut through all the F1 hyperbole!

The BBC have Alan McNish now, and although he's good with the technical stuff, Gary Anderson was more likeable IMO.

Has Gary Anderson left the BBC team then? I always liked his input to the BBC coverage, it was a good level of technical information but explained in a way that even laymen like me could understand what he was saying, and that's a rare quality.

Absolutely appalling decision then. The quote that the BBC feel their audience don't appreciate the technical analysis doesn't ring true for me, it sounds more like "we don't appreciate paying Gary's wages".

...and Mr McNish is going to be cheaper is he?

Complete tosh from the BBC - Gary Anderson is probably the one who can talk some sense and make light of some of the things which the teams do, and explain it in plain English.

Fair point about McNish. I genuinely can't make sense of the decision, it's baffling.

It's the BBC dumbing down and pandering to the lowest common denominator again. I feel tempted to not pay my license fee for this alone!!

I really enjoyed the earnest and simple way GA explained teams tactics, tyre usage and car designs, etc., and he could always read between the lines of what the team boss' were saying.

In fairness I dont pay anything for it. I got it free with HD when sky first got the F1, I had HD anyway so technically dont pay anymore for it.

Bahrain this week, so are we expecting anything other than a Mercedes 1 & 2?

Hamilton looked in a class of his own last week, so my money would be on him to take pole and top step on the podium.

I'll be away so I'm hoping the hotels satellite tv channels has the race coverage, even if it's in German, French or Spanish!!

I reckon so - seem to have the edge at the minute.

McLaren's weren't liking the heat by all accounts but expect them to have some upgrades when back in Europe.

Apparently the FIA has issued a new technical directive, that following the Spanish GP only sensors which have not been modified, may be fitted to the cars. Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Lotus, have been modifying the sensors provided by Gill prior to their calibration by Calibra.

The modifications are apparently intended to facilitate the installation of the sensor between the fuel tank and the engine and the threads on the sensor have been drilled where the fuel lines are attached. Mysteriously the FIA has revealed that 95% of the fuel flow sensor problems to date have occurred only on Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Lotus cars.

From Barcelona onwards, only sensors in their original condition as supplied by Gill sensors will be legal. This statement of intent indicates that the FIA have no intention of sitting down with Horner, Marko or anyone and discussing “a better system” to replace the fuel flow sensors.

Further, Caterham may be asking themselves why they are the only team in the Renault club not party to the advice that modifying the fuel flow sensor may assist them. Whether this was a Renault ‘wheeze’ or the original idea came from Milton Keynes, we’ll probably never know.

One thing that does appear certain now, is that Daniel Ricciardo was made a sacrificial lamb in Melbourne and lost 10-12 points because his team decided the best way to fight a cause that would see them return more quickly to the front was by challenging the FIA to back down and remove the fuel flow sensors.

This has backfired on two fronts. Firstly, on past form, Red Bull would have expected Charlie and his merry band to have kept their heads down and say little or nothing until April 14th. In the meantime, such constant denunciations of the fuel flow sensors by Horner et al, would create the illusion in the mind of the public that something was terribly wrong and required immediate change.

The second reason this has backfired on Red Bull is because most of the ‘clarifications’ Charlie issues take place behind closed doors. Teams are cut some slack and given time to quietly sort themselves out and come into compliance with the regulations.

However, once again, the FIA have not acted to type. The way today’s technical directive has been leaked by the FIA is designed to inflict maximum embarrassment on Red Bull who have been taking the lead in rubbishing the fuel flow sensor equipment and the associated regulations.

But would drilling/rethreading cause any issues?

I guess we'll need to wait until the hearing for the technical evidence to be released
