Eco, Normal and Sports Mode

Featured Replies

Apart from the warm fuzzy feeling you get from pressing the buttons, what real difference do these modes make?

The steering and a few of the other settings are pretty obvious but what about the engine, what changes?

Nothing changes to the engine.  Steering weight, throttle response, and AC mode change and where fitted the sound generator and AFS also change.

Sorry Neily03, whats AFS ?

On a 2.0 TDI DSG car sport gives much improved throttle response but screws up the gear changes  (I've had it hold gear and change at 4500rpm in 2nd even though I was hardly touching the throttle)... much better and totally different in a manual.

The best way I can describe it is that 0-100% of the throttle pedal signal is achieved over 0-100% of throttle pedal movement in normal and eco.

0-100% of signal is achieved over 0-50% of movement in sport mode.

In theory no extra power, just a change to how it delivers the power.

Top Gear did a test with a 2.0TFSI Audi TT and across all modes (Sport,Normal,Comfort) the fastest lap time was in comfort mode! (just)

Sorry.. double post... Joys of being in China!

You can also control the behaviour of ACC (if fitted) via the 'individual' setting.

Also the DSG gear changes in Sport are "supposed" to be faster.

And in eco mode, the DSG box engages neutral, allowing the car to coast when possible. Though some members have noted this feature is buggy.

Strange I found I got a clear view when in crowded location too

Damn, I was hoping for something like K.I.T.T.'s "Pursuit Mode"   :giggle:

Is the vRS Mode button standard on all RS MKIII Models?

I'm not sure that anyone has got one yet! Does the same thing, just with a different logo.

It doesn't even exist, apart from in photos....

I've seen it in the videos on youtube alright, wondering if it is only valid in some countries.

Nope, no one (on here at least) in any country has got this button....

My dealer is claiming that in eco mode the power is also limited to 75%, so after reading this, should I conclude he is wrong? Any comments?

Have driven three versions of the Octy III so far and tried the various modes in all of them.

Sport did in my opinion liven the cars up a little but I found particularly in the vRS 184 DSG and to a lesser extent the 150 DSG, then the eco mode bogged the car down if you tried to accelerate with any urgency. However the mode button in the petrol 1.4 manual worked a lot better.

Sport is cracking good fun in the 150 manual, in 2nd and 3rd the car is noticeably quicker due to the throttle response. My Octy has certainly surprised quite a few boy racers over the few months I've had her. She's a stealth rocket ship.

I've also found that Eco is best for cruising at one speed for a long period of time as the throttle doesn't respond to variations in pressure (helping fuel economy). That said, a couple of times on the motorway I've been in a position where I needed to accelerate fairly quickly to press the throttle and it felt like nothing happened! She can be a tractor acceleration wise in 6th in Eco!

I think he might be partly right. The power isn't limit but rather the amount of throttle. So with the pedal all the way down you will only get 75% throttle not 100%.

In sport it gives you 100% throttle much sooner (around 75% I think) on the pedal so although it feels quicker it's not actually just that your brain tells you it's quicker because you're not pressing fully on the throttle.

When in eco mode, i've noticed if you press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, it seems to flick a switch that over rides the mode setting so you get 100% throttle temporarily, then it seems to revert back to what ever % this mode normally allows when you ease off.

That sounds like the kickdown switch for DSG box.

I think they also fitted them to the manual cars and used them as you describe.

It's fitted to the VRS in the Skoda pavilion at Autostadt in Wolfsburg!

Drove home in Sport mode last night to see what it was like (1.4 TSI man). Good fun, was quite taken aback by the throttle response initially. I know it doesn't actually 'add' anything to the performance of the car but the idea that you effectively get different results with the same driving style is quite a nice one - it certainly gives the illusion that the car is more powerful.

Anybody care to comment on sport mode in a 1.4 TSI DSG ? I ragged one on test drive but, only on a dual carriageway.
