Not fosse park every day about 3 or 4 times a week I have to go through south wigston god knows how many times a week it's pretty grim even without road works.

I have had the car since end of November and done 2,900 mile all around South Leicester .Its in silver leaf what are you driving?

I've seen a silver leaf one around. I'm currently driving a slightly battered red LDV Maxus. You can't miss it. :-)

So if a red maxus van flashes me I know who it is then ;)

...but I still switch of the engine as I slow to a sure stop - eg the local railcrossing, as soon as I see it, engine off and roll up to the que. There are some traffic lights that are way too long I pass though as well - engine off the minute they go red.

Aren't you afraid that someday you don't have enough vacuum at the brake booster? Brakes aren't very effective if there's no vacuum. A couple of brakings while engine is shut, and it feels like there's no brakes at all.

********

Now that I'm get used to start/stop it feels stupid if engine runs at traffic lights. Green light can be predicted by observing the traffic. Push the clutch and engage the gear before green light lit up, and of you go as soon as possible. Anticipation I guess is the word.

My start/stop have not worked for some weeks now. It observe battery temperature and I can tell you it's been cold here up north.

I know it happens with the brakes so I bear that in mind, you can judge the amount of braking and keep a constant brake level which doesnt loose the vacuum, to stop accuratly (ish!) but its pretty low pace braking - not hard and late.

Its the on off pumping as you say,  that causes the vacuum issue to kick in.

On the occassion it fails to brake, I grab the handbrake and turn the key asap - but that doesnt happen very often :) I do aim to be crawling at a snails pace before I come anywhere near anything!

Sounds pretty unsafe to me. I thought that modern engines consumed no fuel when coastingso what are you gaining? By turning the engine off you are potentially losing braking power, you lose all steering assistance, you lose the ability to react to something unexpected by reapplying the throttle, you lose all the electronic driver aids e.g. city safe etc. By all means turn the engine off once static but not before...

What about if you hit an unexpected patch of ice whilst the ignition is off...oh dear no ABS... Never mind I'll pull the handbrake on????

That's my understanding too, when coming up to lights etc I just slow down through the gears + brake at an appropriate amount.

I agree with you. I shall engine brake more often in future. I think its more frustration "jam again! oh well might as well switch off! grrr..." :punch:

Strangely the power steering switches to ultra light mode, (related to the issue with the random turning some people have and poor software??) so thats not an issue..

Consider me converted

The deceleration also activates the charging system which I was told switches off when the battery is fully charged. switching off the ignition will also switch off the voltage stabilising circuit of the stop start.
