  • Well car is now back home after a slight detour through the Leicestershire countryside , initial impression I'm very impressed by the car , needs better front tyres but I'm guessing the previous owner

  • Have you got full details about its history and if any warranty work has been done?   I don't want to alarm anyone it's just that I've been caught out on the Fabia vRS I've just bought with regard t

Thats likely if not kerbed wheels to have been a rubbish Tyre Fitter replacing tyres or changing tyres onto the new wheels.,

what tyres are on it.

They need done with care.

Believe the fronts were falken and the rears are continentals

Is this high oil consumption really that bad and something to worry about?

There obviously is a problem with a not insignificant number of cars but the majority are absolutely fine - it sounds like you're buying from a helpful dealer should there be any issues - enjoy the car.

Yeah I'm just going to monitor it for a while till I'm used to the car and then see how it goes, hadn't really seen much about it before I went to look at them to be honest, fingers crossed then.

Anyone near there recommend some good roads to try on the way back from Mansfield to Birmingham ?

Mansfield to Birmingham, I would recommend a slight detour over the Cat & Fiddle

  • Author

Isn't the cat and fiddle by Macclesfield not Mansfield? I know the road well :) was thinking maybe a detour through the derby dales

Congrats on the new wheels. Beautiful looking car! Mine has just tuned 3 1/2 and creeping up to 50k on the clock. No issues so far aside from being a little oil thirsty in the last 4 months. Happy motoring.

Yeah just going to see what the oil situation is when I get it,surely the previous owner would have picked it up in 3years and 14k miles but we will see, nothing in the warranty to lean towards oil problems though

If you could be bothered, it would be interesting.

If the car is sitting not recently moved,

ask the salesperson handing over how you check the oil.

Just to see if they know it should be checked at Normal Operating Temperature.

Anyway, dip it cold.  no engine started, the oil might be above the Cross hatch area and below the top Orange marker,

that is as it should be.

When checked hot,  it should be just below the top of the cross hatch.

Hot is not 5 minutes sitting warming up, it might be more than 10 minutes of driving.

So just see how the level is on delivery,  cold,  then when you get home,

dip after 5 minutes or so, not after 20 minutes.

Have fun, and set your own tyre pressures, do not trust what it comes set at.

Hotcheck should be in or just below 'Area A', not above.

What do you mean by if I could be bothered?

I was going to check the oil before I leave the dealer anyway

Sorry, i mean on behalf of me, to satisfy my nose.

I was hoping you would be doing it,

It is amazing how many Salespeople that had vRS as Company Cars while Demonstrators and when you mention oil,

they know nothing and look at you as though you are stupid,

and any mention of oil or how to dip it is being just silly.

Some of them drive cars, or several of them do for 3,000 miles and never check the oil.

So since you are checking, maybe try it the 'Jabozuma Way' please.

Cold car, open the bonnet dip it cold. see where it is.

Start the car, no need to get in, just start it, and stop it.

Dip it,  the level it shows might now be the same level as when you do the Hot Check later.

Again, the sales person might look at you like you are wrong in the head.

Well we have a 100mile drive back so can give it a good run around ,I'll do it from cold as long as they haven't moved the car previous to my arrival,if they have I will do it later on in the day or leave it overnight

In all fairness to the dealer they have been understanding in my fears of the oil situation and have even said if I do suspect something untoward in the next few weeks they will happily investigate .

Its taken long enough till now,

if they bother now that is great, because for 3 years many were giving it the 3 monkeys.

Lots of owners that had to put Oil in far too often & never had checks done due to being told,

"they are all like that, read the Owners manual, it says may use 0.5 litres in 1000km.",  so they just kept putting in oil.

Hope yours is a good one.

Just drive and have fun.

It seems to be a good one to be honest, time will tell though.

They really don't want to try and fob me off with crap excuses and trying to pull a fast one on me.

I'm a qualified vehicle technician and currently build engines at jaguar cars so I know my way around an engine

You would think the combined technical knowledge of the Volkswagen Audi Group that designed and built the 1.4 TSI CAVE & the the CTHE engine would know their way around them as well,

Yet after 4 years they are still selling ones that are failing.

First they rebuilt engines, then they used Short Engines and now they fit a New Replacement,

and then some of them fail.

This is the engine up to 125kW, not the 132-136 kW one.
