Intermittent wiper fault solved 2003 fabia elegance 1.9Tdi

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently posted a problem with my intermittent wiper system on my 1.9 TDI Skoda Fabi elegance 2003 model.

After reading countless posts with the same problem I started by testing all three fuses with my multimeter all the fuses were okay. I did discover that my fuse box layout is different to standard and does not follow what is shown in the Haynes manual.

I then went to the bonnets microswitch which does seem to be the problem area for this fault.

After much messing about I managed to disconnect the two wires that go to this microswitch.

I tested the two wires which did have a voltage supply to them This suggested that the fault was in the switch housing itself and not in the electrical system of the car.

The switch plastic socket has 2 connector pins in the housing and is very fiddly to gain access to as it is mounted sideways on the back of the bonnets locking plate.

I managed to connect the 2 pins to my multimeter but although the reading showed the microswitch was working there was very high resistance across the two pins.

I sprayed degreasing fluid into the socket where pins are located and then dried them off with compressed air

I also scratched the pins clean with the tips of my multimeter probes and then retested, the resistance had fallen to almost 0 when the switch was closed

I reconnected the plug, switched on the ignition, tested the intermittent wiper and everything is now okay.

There is a minute crack in the plastic housing of the switch and I think that this led to the two pins getting dirty wet and greasy etc.

I intend to seal the crack with a smear of bathroom sealant when it stops raining, probably in July/august

Thanks to everyone that previously posted this problem as it was the responses to these that led me in the right direction so thanks again

Sincere regards

Graham

Hi can you give me any direction for that switch? Cant find it at all Ive skoda fabia 2003 1.4 16v many thanks for help

I did discover that my fuse box layout is different to standard and does not follow what is shown in the Haynes manual.

There is a fusebox layout I'm sure in the pinned fabia useful thread that Lee posted, that might be a bit more helpful if the Haynes manual isn't just for future reference if ever needed.

Glad you've got it all sorted now though :)

Hi Czechrider,

When you open the bonnet look down to where the bonnet latch engages the lock (between you and the radiator when facing the engine from the front) it should be very clearly visible. Now look at the the very bottom of that lock on the engine side and the microswitch is attached there. There should be a cable running around the engine compartment leading to the switch where 2 wires are connected to it. I used a torch when first finding it as it is hard to see.

Ps if you're stood facing the engine the switch is on the right hand side of the lock (at the bottom)

I hope this helps

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham, how did you take the switch apart? I can't see the join. Mike
