Superb 4x4 with a problem (lumpy-ride!)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Dad-In-Law now owns my 2010 Superb Estate - It's a 170 4x4.

It has a full service history, and has been great.. but he has a problem.

There's, a rumble, from the front off-side - it's felt through the whole of the car not just the steering wheel. - you can feel it from the passenger side.

Now, we assumed he'd hit a pot-hole - so swopped front wheel to the back, checking it in-between - this has made no difference.

We checked brake pads / discs, and all are in good order.

Now it goes along with speed, rather than engine speed, so we've dismissed engine mounts etc.

He's had it to local dealer today, who doesn't know, and it's going in for a few days next week.

The car is also covered by a Skoda / CarCarePlan extended warranty.

Any thoughts, most appreciated.

Bearing/UJ?

Does the noise increases/changes when going into corner?

No change with cornering. Just increases / decreases with speed, hence thinking it's not the wheel Bearing.

Car has around 40,000 miles on it.

Local main VW dealer (who's serviced it from new) has now been out in it - he has no idea, and wants it for a couple of days.... it's going in next week.

if it is bearing you can check it yourself - lift the car and:

Final drive bearing? Does it change if clutch is dipped? I had this once on a VW Jetta, thought it was a wheel bearing but turned out to be final drive. Didn't change with lateral load like wheel bearing does

Sounds like wheel bearings.

Thanks for all your suggestions...

My dad-in-law called me on Friday night - he was suck with a puncture - on the near-side front.

The tyre had split (a one and a half year old, Vredestine WintracXtreme 18" with only 10k miles!) and the split was on the inside.

When he got the spare on, the rumble / thud had gone. (please bare in mind the lumpyness was felt through the off-side) hence not checking or changing the near side! - This was confirmed over the weekend when he bought a new tyre and had it fitted..

Thanks, Al.

So your saying the dealer looked at the car and didn't notice that it had a dangerous (split) tyre !!!.

I know he did not fully examine the car but surely any dealer should notice this, even if it was on the opposite side.

Beggars belief.....

Yep, Didn't notice it... didn't  have a clue what was wrong... needless to say, it's not going in tonight for more in-depth investigations.

Change your dealer QUICK...

A blind service engineer(he he) could kill you.

Very interesting outcome. I have a L&K estate and the ride is very secure especially around twisty alpine roads.

But to the point you raised, I visited Austria with my previous VW Passat and en route from Frieburg to the Austrian border I notice a disconcerting rumble from the front nearside. The mountain village I stayed at has a VW dealer where it was tested for a wheel bearing failure. In fact the sevice manager used the car for a couple of days having found no bearing fault. He then checked the tyres for age, still plenty of tread in evidence, and found them to be six years old (low annual mileage car). He suggested they needed replacement because the oils evaporate from the rubber over time and they become hardened and far less effective grip wise. I replaced the little worn tyres when I returned to the UK and had no further trouble.
