Good Amplifier Recommendations

Featured Replies

Hokey dokey. So I've taken the plunge and will be buying a sub & box from Des this weekend, BUT, I will need an amp to power & run it. This brings up the usual what/where/when/how questions that I need answering. :(

I've seen Kenwood amps on the net for around

What wattage is the sub rated at, mate? That will help guide you towards the kind of amp you want to get!

I think my sub is 700w and the amp is 250w (bridged)...

I don't know the wattage actually. Here's Des' quote

"I have saved you a 10" Dyn-Audio sub and box, this is more a sound quality rather than boom sub and will show up a bad amp."

To me, this sounds like I'd need a

For a 10" sub I'd recommend 250W RMS on a single channel, which should be do-able for

Which is why I thought a trip to "mobile radio" with it may be in order... This is a local I.C.E specialist company in Exeter who impress me with their knowledge and range of stock. It sounds like a good sub though as I am more after really good loud sound quality rather than a booming NTS NTS NTS sound quality. :speaker:

edit: just had call from dealer - my barrel has arrived and will be fitted on Saturday am, before going up to the RPM weekend - which means I can get the eibachs done safely between then and the National meet. YAY!

Jason - the Sony amp I got was the cheapest on offer and does 250W on a single channel - powers the sub (10") very nicely - most of the time it's pretty subtle, unless I really crank up the volume on the head unit...

Jason, is eBay a bit like your online Argos catalogue??

Kind of - If I want something I'll always look on there to see if there are any bargains - and that AMP looked like one to me, plus I save on postage.

Personally I'd have thought that Kenwood one would be a little short on power, but if the seller's run it on a 12" and Steve's running a lower power one with good results then it can't be all that bad! :)

For the money though, I'd look more at something like: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3043423764&category=4950. Going to Southampton will be more expensive though I'd imagine... :D

Rob - I can't see any technical jargon on that sub - and its got a reserve too. :( Have you any idea just how powerful it is? It deffo looks the daddy though!

Oh, yes, didn't see that reserve... :(

Judging by the description, I'd sat thats 55W RMS on 2 channels, so if you bridged it'll probably produce about 120W. Will sound good though! :D

But wouldn't the 250W produced by the Kenwood Amp local to me be even better. I've done a serach for that AMP online, and all I can find is some Nova-boy in south-England who has/had one in his suped-up Nova. It could the same person I reckon?

They're about equivalent power wise, as that 250W is max output, so it will be about 120W RMS.

Found the bigger brother of that Rockford one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3041964904&category=4950 which should manage 250W RMS bridged, and doesn't have a reserve. P&P is tenner though...

It's in Cheshire though Rob - Could pick it up at the National...

Or pay a tenner P&P, cheapskate... :p

Right you are - although I'm still tempted by the Kenwood unit which is local, and cheaper.

Jason - best get yourself to Halfords (or order from one of the many companies online) and get all the power wires, etc, that you're going to need! :D

I'd better see what it comes with first, eh? The bloke who's selling it seems to have set up an install himself, so should be able to point me in the right direction.

Exactly where and how does power come from the front to the boot. I assume off the battery, but how?
