Rattle in driver's A-pillar

Featured Replies

Hey, I've encountered an annoying rattle in my new Octy3 and checking here to see if anyone has dealt with the same issue or has something helpful to comment. Went throught the problems/faults threads but couldn't find the issue.

The sound is best described as a dull rattle, loud enough to be heard even with music on, definitely annoying.

The sound seems to be coming from the general region of the driver's side A-pillar / driver's side windscreen, I'm not capable of narrowing it down further.

The sounds comes on at about 90-100 km/h (60 mph), from which I conclude that it has to do with pressure on the windscreen. That makes sense, right?

The pillar also has the little plastic ticket-holder thingie, which was an immediate suspect, but it doesn't seem to be involved, i.e. the rattle continues with the thingie fixed or not touching the windscreen.

The car is a 1.4 estate, left-hand drive, 1 month old, done 1700km/1100mi.

I realize I'm most likely going to have to take it in to have it fixed and that might involve having the pillar torn down.

Nevertheless, any insights or comments are appreciated.

Not had that, I have an intermittent vibration coming from around the seat belt holder on the driver's side B pillar.

Remind me of a story told to me by a bloke who ran an engineering workshop that reground crankshafts, reconditioned engines, that sort of thing. Previous to that he was a quality inspector at a Ford factory.

Somebody had a car (don't know which model) that had a rattle in the bodywork that seemed to be coming from somewhere near the B pillar. Dealers searched for this rattle for quite a time but could not find out what it was. Eventually, in desperation they cut a hole in the pillar to investigate.

Inside, they found that someone had welded a nut to a length of springy welding wire and tacked the other end of the wire to the wall of the B pillar which meant that at random times the nut would sway on the end of the wire, tapping against the metal. This was in the days before robots did all the body assembly and maybe a worker had a bit of a grievance.

True story.

Sorry to hear about your rattle. I've got a whistle that's appeared in the window on the driver's door above 60mph. Car was fine the first 14 days.

I too have this, comes on around 70 MPH, and from the same side N/S (RHD car).... Very annoying, what we have noticed is a small piece of what looks like dark foam as dropped down into view near the bottom of the screen.

Will get it sorted hopefully when we're next at the dealers.

Also while on the vibration / rattle thing I also have one which comes and goes and appears to be coming  from around the top of the front door seals, sometimes N/S and other times O/S.

Anyone else with this one

  • 1 year later...

I have rattle both in the a pillar area and b pillar area (end of seat belt). I will leave the car to the dealer for another issue in a week and I will mention this. I had the B pillar rattle in my GOlf 5 and the dealer never found the cause of it...so annoying hearing this everyday. This time around I am not accepting it.

Don't know if its the same, but I also had a rattle, only from about 60mph and seemed to be top corner of door/window.

All looked OK and couldn't find anything obvious so I took to dealers. Head mechanic came out on test drive with me, tried a bit lubricant on door seal etc. No joy then told me that Skoda Have made some "uprated" door seals so would order some.

Anyway cars been back in had these fitted and no no more noise

I had a rattle and it took ages to find it. The passenger side seat belt clip, the bit the seat belt cilps in to, it's got a red plastic part fitted at the top, if you pushed it up and down with your finger it rattled, replaced under warranty, rattle gone.

Hope that helps
