Rear Window Heater doesn't turn off automatically

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just realised that my rear window heater doesn't turn off automatically. I have read at few forums that it should shut after 10 mins (approx).

Has anybody experienced it?

It will do, takes longer than 10 mins im sure. Switch it on, go for a reasonably ling drive and you'll find it will shut itself off...sure its actually 15 or 20 mins.

Default is 600 seconds (or 10 mins in old money) on every UK spec car I have pulled a 09 Controller Map from for both front and rear screens.

Just a nuisance the door mirrror heaters don't switch off automatically - I've left them on several times by mistake.

I used to like the old Vauxhall way of controlling the heated mirrors (don't shoot me down in flames) in that the heated rear windscreen had to be on as well. When the heated screen automatically turned off the heated mirrors did as well.

I have read somewhere that wing mirrors haven't got a timer on them. I could be wrong...

VAG is the only manufacturer that I've experienced that does not have the mirrors linked to the rear window. Ford, Vauxhall, Volvo, Honda and Peugeot to name but a few all do it that way.

Having the heated mirrors come on with the rear window heating isn't something that can be coded with VCDS is it? Or is the heating hard wired into the switched?

Yeah they're the self-adjusting model, you have to adjust the switch yourself. tee hee

Not all VAG Marques have a separate switch for door mirror heaters. I have one where the door mirrors and rear window heater are integrated as is more common practise.

I tend to just leave my heated mirrors on all the time at this time of year, might be another reason why Timmy get better mpg than me!

one of the bug-bears of my MkII vRS is that the wing mirror heating is manual.

my previous 3 BMW's were all automatic.

linking it to the rear screen would be OK, but sometimes that is clear and yet there is condensation on the wing mirrors (depends on the morning sun, etc.), so it's not the ideal solution - that would be for it just to be automatic.

On my previous car, the 2007 Mk2 Octy I thought the mirrorheating was linked to the rear window.(wrong of course) Because of that I just left the switch on permanently!

Result: BOTH mirrorglasses eventually got loose due to the heat, luckily I saw a strange vibrasion in both Mirrors just before they fell off so i rescued both of them.

Both where glued back on with double adhesive tape, but the warming-up took a little longer. (Maybe the tape was a bit to thick!)
