New Golf R

Featured Replies

All modern Audis are too safe, you have to be going at warp 9 to

get into any real trouble in one really.

If however they made a thoroughbred trackday car like the KTM, Atom or Caterham

or something then I reckon it could be epic. They certainly have the know how.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Your drawing conclusions from the old outgoing RS3 model and applying them to the new MQB based cars which are even the reviewers say in a different class.

Also that's one reviewer on a dry day everyone (reviewers included) who's driven the M135I in the rain says its bad/scary.

Also whats with all the wind noise in the BMW?

Edited to separate replies

Nobody has drawn any conclusions on the old RS3 on here, i drove 2 and draw on experience of them

& have my opinion on them, scary fast, and lovely on the road.

& i just posted a video review.

The new S3 Sportback & Saloon has good reviews, and the Mk7 Golf has.

Although ive not checked, you could probably pick up an M5 or M3 for that money

As with everything, people want different things. Cars are no different hence the debates.

Audis are safe but set so that they are useable and fast to almost anyone. RWD cars are more edgy and in the wet a little less user friendly. Some want it some don't no one car fits all

The S3 won't get your adrenaline going. It's just a S car at the end of the day albeit a bloody good one. RS is where things start to get more exciting.

S cars are a compromise between comfort and pace.

Not all RS cars though.

The new RS6 is supposed to be a real good one.

I personally was drawing my conclussions from every 4WD Audi/VAG since about 1995 onwards ...

The Last RS3 was crap due to the geometry settings VAG dialled into it - not a fundamental issue with the car

This is choice made by VAG to deaden the handling of the car

When Audi first released the TT they gave it decent handling - folks rolled the cars - so Audi neutered its handling

They now do this with every car

When folks crashed Scoobies or Evo's did either of these companies decide to tone down their cars handling ? - don't think so

Fair enough makes it safer for those who can't drive a 4x4 having been brought up drive FWD,

but with the Golf R, S series and (in particular) RS series I think you should get more than just a little bit more power

Compare the A45 AMG to the current RS3

On paper they share very similar hardware - open transaxle diffs but use ESP to compensate, pressure controlled viscous coupling central diff

So neither are 'true' 4WD systems, yet the A45 has handling approaching an Evo

Audi have shown what it's actually capable of with the R8 ...

One could be forgiven for thinking that the handling of every VAG model is scientifically designed to x% less than an R8, based on the retail price tag ...

Where they are actually Loosely designed for the European Mainland roads,

& if you suggest to a UK Salesperson you want to tick the no cost option for the not 'Sport' suspension and take the standard smaller alloys with a few more mm of side wall,

they tell you about you killing the residuals and how special that Sports Ride and Look is.

They look at you & treat you as though, if you can not afford it specced up you have no idea about cars or how to drive.

They are often the Salespeople that a year ago sold Blinds or Furniture, and a month before were in a Citroen Dealership.

2000 miles on the clock already!!

2000 miles on the clock already!!

2000 carefully driven demo miles... :D

'Asking Prices' are just that, wishes and dreams of Dealers & Manufacturers that do not want their product to look cheap,

even when you might well get them as a bargain if they do not sell well.

Their business is about building and selling and making money, and reselling and making more

money again.. & maybe another again, before they are done with it,

& then they aim to sell/lease another new one, to the first buyer or Registered Keeper of the first new car.

There are always those that pay what is asked and are happy with what they get.

Or do the PCP and are happy that the Manufacturers Contribution looks like they got money off.

£7,000 down and £600 + a month for 4 years and you drive away not caring how many £££'s that costs you a year.

£41,000 car, with its overpriced OTR,  cost you £33,000 for 4 years, or £22 odd a day.

& its back in the Dealers 4 years later with a £25,000 Asking Price.

(You have the choice, pay £5-£10 a day and just Lease some car or another,

maybe its just transport & economy you want!)

They are just cars and on a Lease Often.

Only thing is not everybody wants a race car for the road that is twitchy, exciting and difficult but rewarding to drive. thats why cars like the Golf R and audi S exist as they are still fast, less rewarding but still fun and lose the some of the difficulty and riskyness of drivig in the harder weather conditions.

People look at cars that fit their needs and we are al diiferent. The S3 fitted mine but i will truely agree that it is by no means an edgy brilliant wonder of handling and amazing fun. That said it does do alot of things well and areas that are important to me. Just like previous cars we have all owned, we buy them for us, not due to jornos or mass opinion.

buy as you see fit and everyone else can enjoy their own car :)

The Volkswagen Audi Group just confuse things with their use of letters and names.

'R', was fair enough, you understand that on a Golf. or other hot engine cars

& in 2012 they produce 2,500 LHD 'Polo R WRC' with 225 bhp but 2 wd & manual.

Then they have 'R Line', which is not performance on Polos, just Looks.

Now they talk about having a 250 bhp Manual 'Polo R'.  & a 'Golf R EVO'.

Audi are no better, you get 'RS' or 'S', or 'S Line',

and they are about to bring out a 'S1' Quattro 228 BHP Manual.

Skoda stick on a 'v',for vRS,  and Rest of world just call it a 'RS'.

At least we all know what they mean.  Dont we.!

im afraid they all do it.

BMW M135i not even an official M car. M, M sport, etc

then Merc have added AMG to cars that just have AMG styiling

so hard to keep track of

Not all RS cars though.

New RS 6 is sublime. When I drove it back to back with the V10+ I struggled to pick which I'd rather have.

I parked my dirty Superb next to what I thought was a 'smart looking Golf' at Pulman VW in Durham this morning.

It wasn't until I'd squeezed past it to open my back door did I realise it was a brand new 14 plate Golf R.

Had I known they were £40K+ I'd have been a little more careful :giggle:

They list at £30k but guess that's a high spc used one priced to take advantage of the people who don't want to wait

So the VRS may at some point become the V line, and  Seat get the F line?

People like me!

Got any pics and thoughts of your S3 mate? I did 380 miles and still got fuel in it today.

My RS would get 250 at a push. Well happy.

Yeah will post some up mate
