"Engine Oil Level check" light came at 5400 miles

Featured Replies

While driving to Birmingham this morning the "Engine Oil Level check" light came on. My car is 5 months old and has done 5400 miles. Called the dealer and they asked me to pop in to have the oil topped up. They put three quarters of a litre and the warning light went away.

Dealer said its normal to have such warning light as its using more oil being engine this new.

Is it normal??

FYI.. Its a manual 1.2 TSI Octavia III SE

Thanks

  • So you've done 5400 miles in a new car and not checked it yourself? No that's not normal it's careless.

  • VAG cars particularly petrols tend to burn a fair bit of oil from new but does settle after a few K. I dont think the guy needed to be harrased and told that he is irresponsible for not checking his

  • You serious??  Don't check the oil because there's a warranty and breakdown cover??   Warranty doesn't cover negligence, if you let it run out of oil you'll be faced with a very large bill.   What

Careless and irresponsible. Checking oil is a basic requirement of motoring. Sorry, but you should check, it takes  about 20 seconds. You could make it a habit to check when you top up the screen wash.

Its likely it wasn't checked at PDI and was low. Some cars seem to arrive from the factory with oil levels at minimum - my 09 Fabia did - and it didnt get checked/rectified by the delivering dealer... :swear:

Oil level should be checked regularly, at least until you have confidence that you can leave it 2000 -3000 miles between checks as a few engines unfortunately turn out to be oil drinkers.

Fortunately the OP has an oil level sensor and if he bothered to look in the boot, he probably would have found a factory supplied 1 litre can of engine oil in a pouch. He could have topped it up then and there.

Whether the car left the factory without enough oil or not the point still remains, the OP didn't and it would seem has not in 5 months checked their oil level.

Nuff said ?

Pardon my ignorance.. Its just I m bit amateur when it comes to things under the bonnet.

How often should I be checking the oil?

Thanks in advance

Saurabh..

No harm done. I check when I top up screen wash so usually weekly but that's excessive. Maybe every two weeks depending upon how many miles you drive.

Extract from the manual;

The engine consumes a little oil. The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5 l/ 1000 km depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate your vehicle. Consumption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5000 kilometres.

The oil level must be checked at regular intervals. We recommend after each time you refuel or prior to making a long journey.

I should have flicked through the manual..

Is it better to check it first thing in the morning?

Unlikely, most cars don't. Oil light is low pressure warning, not level.

How often should I be checking the oil?

Given that it only needed 3/4L after 5 months, if you continue to drive at same rate, checking every 6-8 weeks should be ok. Just remember not to overfill when topping up.

Cheers

Point noted...

Much appreciated....

All Mk3 engines including the 1.2 Tsi have a combined oil level and oil quality sensor. Its there to support the variable service regime.

They also have an oil pressure switch but triggers a different warning/light and sounds a warning buzzer if the engine is running and low oil pressure occurs - and unless youre quick ( a few seconds at most) its likely the engine is damaged ......

I wonder how many posters here who have criticised the OP for not checking the oil level on a suitably regular basis check their tyre pressures weekly as is considered best practice?

I picked up my new car on Saturday and only just found the litre of oil supplied in the glovebox. I'll be checking the levels at lunchtime as it's done over 150 miles now!  Maybe that's a bit excessive!

EDIT: checked mine at lunchtime and it's full up.  :)

I'd say check every tank of fuel for the first few tanks until you get a feel for it?

Lets be fair actually, all O3's have breakdown, servicing & warrantee so whilst its seriously advisable, its not absolutely essential to check your oil levels. Yes you'll look a little silly or a bit of girl but, nobody gets hurt or killed so, it ain't the worst thing you can do with a car.

Crack on Saurabh your doing ok, take an evening course in Car Maintenance should you be interested or just take it to the dealers whenever you get a warning light either way, just keep buying cars with breakdown, servicing & warrantee and you won't go far wrong.

What next don't bother braking for that car infront because we've got insurance??

Don't need to with a tyre pressure monitor on board!

Yes you do, it won't tell if all the tyres have gone flat.

I'm kind of with you on this, I know I should be checking the oil level regularly but its getting round to doing it. The bonnet has only been up once in three months to refill the washer fluid. I guess thats why I change my car every three years because I want a warranty and minimal checking to guarantee roadworthiness. Leave most of it to the service bods every year I say.

Ive had 5 new cars in past 10 years and have never had to top the oil up in any of them.
